Once you get off at Tokyo's Tsukiji Market and head inside,

You'll see this gentleman's face everywhere.

If you follow the map to the Sushi Zanmai Main Branch among them,

Even at the stalls outside,

They're selling tuna and salmon sashimi, but these are mostly

Purchased by Western tourists,

And decisively, they're expensive!!!

A few slices of fish cost ~$14-~$21.

When you go inside the restaurant,

Don't go to a convenience store; I highly recommend heading to Tsukiji Market's Sushi Zanmai instead!

At Tokyo's Tsukiji Market,

When you step into the sushi hotspot, Sushi Zanmai,

Beyond the standard Japanese menu,

The availability of foreign language menus was very convenient.

(You can order via tablet!!!)

You can choose everything you want à la carte.

I could order, eat, and then order again!

The two of us ate until we were just slightly less than full, and the bill came out to about ~$48.

Since each piece of sushi was less than ~$3, it was great that we could just keep ordering without worrying!

What I loved most about this sushi spot in Tokyo's Tsukiji Market was that it's something that's disappeared in Korea:

the ability to pick and choose exactly what I wanted, to keep ordering and eating—it's like a "choose-your-own-adventure" sushi omakase (?), or rather, Okonomi Sushi!

Also, it was fantastic to be able to eat in a really relaxed atmosphere, just like a conveyor belt sushi restaurant.

And since it's a great value sushi spot in Tokyo, the price per piece of sushi was also very affordable.

In Korea, ordering sushi one piece at a time usually costs a minimum of ~$4 to ~$10,

but here, I could enjoy herring sushi and horse mackerel sushi repeatedly for just ~$1 to ~$3 per piece, which made me so incredibly happy!

I love blue-backed fish!!!!

Tsukiji Market's Sushizanmai isn't a super high-end sushi restaurant;

it's more like a famous chain Pyongyang Naengmyeon (cold noodle) spot in Korea, if that makes sense?

While Google reviews show many Koreans, when we visited,

we were the only foreigners, and everyone else was a local from Tokyo, Japan!

The grandpa chefs swiftly prepared the ordered sushi,

making it incredibly fast, and they seemed like true masters!

The staff and chefs at this Tsukiji Market sushi spot weren't exactly friendly...

Perhaps it's because I've gotten so used to traveling in China, but I also felt a bit uncomfortable when the Tokyo grandma eating across from me gave me the side-eye every time I tried to snap a photo.

Even though I felt they were somewhat unfriendly, I adopted an "who cares?!" mindset and just kept eating tons of my favorite fish—like herring 🐟, which must have been a pain to prepare for them!

The tuna was also incredibly delicious!

While some of the blue-backed fish had a slightly stronger fishy taste, overall, everything was super tasty.

In Korea, even at places that offer Okonomi-style sushi, you often have to order everything at once.

But here, I could eat, see if I was full, then order more, or just reorder my favorite pieces, which I think made it even better...

✔️ Oh, right! In the middle, they give you some rather flimsy-looking side dish.

This is a menu item they charge you for without even mentioning it!

It wasn't much money, but...

To give out something like that and then charge for it without asking? I was pretty baffled.

Even so,

honestly, if I visit Tokyo again,

I'd definitely want to eat here again!
