Lisa's Vietnam Survival Guide
🚨 Today's Survival Log
Travel tips learned firsthand (as of July 2026)
To cut straight to the chase: it's perfectly fine.
Summer (July-August) in Vietnam sees completely opposite weather patterns:
Central Vietnam (Da Nang, Nha Trang) is dry season, while the southern island (Phu Quoc) is rainy season.
If water activities are your main goal, I recommend Da Nang or Nha Trang.
If a luxurious resort staycation is what you're after, Phu Quoc is your best bet.
⭐️ Today's Survival Difficulty: ★★☆
No problem with the rainy season if you choose your city wisely.

1. Summer Vietnam Weather: Is it Rainy Season?

Recommended Vietnam Destinations
Vietnam is a long, narrow country stretching from north to south,
so even in July, the weather can be completely different depending on the region.

✅ Central Vietnam (Da Nang, Nha Trang) ➜ Summer is dry season! Mostly clear skies.
✅ Southern Islands (Phu Quoc) ➜ Summer is rainy season, with tropical downpours (squalls).
The rainy season doesn't mean it rains all day like a monsoon. Instead,
you'll typically experience heavy downpours (squalls) for 1-2 hours, then the skies clear up again.
I've personally traveled to Phu Quoc during the summer,
and it would pour in the morning, then clear up beautifully in the afternoon.

If you plan your itinerary flexibly, the weather won't stop your trip.

2. Da Nang, Nha Trang, Phu Quoc: Summer Weather Comparison

Da Nang Weather
City | Summer (July-August) Weather | Summer Highlights |
Da Nang | Dry season, clear and very hot | My Khe Beach water activities, Ba Na Hills |
Nha Trang | Dry season, most sunny days among the three | Ocean swimming, island hopping, Vinpearl |
Phu Quoc | Rainy season, frequent squalls | Resort staycations, luxury hotels |
To summarize again:
✔️ Da Nang - Summer is dry season, so it's sunny but very hot, often exceeding 91°F (33°C) in the midday.
✔️ Nha Trang - Its dry season runs longest, from January to August, making it the most favorable for summer water activities.
✔️ Phu Quoc - The rainy season is from May to October, but this is also when accommodation prices drop significantly.
3. Top Summer Vietnam Destinations by Travel Style

1️⃣ Water Activities & Adventure ➜ Nha Trang
Perfect for ocean swimming and island hopping tours.
You can easily combine it with a day trip to Vinpearl Land.
I visited Nha Trang during its dry season, and
the weather was absolutely gorgeous for my entire 3-night, 5-day trip. The island hopping tour was fantastic,
and I could see so many fish clearly.
The sea was calm, too, perfect for a swim.

Da Nang Dry Season
2️⃣ Mix of Sightseeing & Relaxation ➜ Da Nang
Da Nang offers the most attractions, including Ba Na Hills and the Hoi An night market.
The midday heat can be intense,
so I recommend a schedule like: morning sightseeing ➜ afternoon pool time ➜ evening night market stroll.

Da Nang Rainy Season
I've visited Da Nang during both the dry and rainy seasons,
and I can confirm that Da Nang is definitely better in the dry season!
Even though it's hot, you'll get to see Ba Na Hills on a clear day
and swim at My Khe Beach. Just be prepared for the heat 😂

Phu Quoc Rainy Season
3️⃣ Pure Relaxation & Resort Stays ➜ Phu Quoc
During the rainy season, Phu Quoc resort prices drop significantly.
You can find 5-star hotels and flight packages for around ~$320, making it a perfect time for a budget-friendly luxury trip.
Even during the rainy season, the weather isn't always bad.
I traveled to Phu Quoc during the rainy season, and
it would rain for a short period in the morning, which I spent at the hotel,
then explored the area in the afternoon when the weather cleared up.

I even managed to catch a beautiful sunset during the rainy season!
🚨 Survival Tip! |
There were days when I was eating at a restaurant and it started pouring. I just relaxed and waited it out, and suddenly the rain stopped. If a squall hits, it's smart to take it easy and wait for 20-30 minutes! |
4. What to Pack & Tips for Vietnam's Rainy Season

✔️ Pack a raincoat - Raincoats are more convenient than umbrellas during squalls.
✔️ Portable fan - Essential for combating midday temperatures of 91°F (33°C) and high humidity.
✔️ Sunscreen SPF50 - UV rays are strong even during the rainy season.
✔️ Light jacket or cardigan - Air conditioning indoors can be quite strong.

⚠️ Survival Alert
- Central Vietnam also transitions to rainy season starting in September.
If booking for late summer, be prepared for potential weather changes!
- In Phu Quoc during the rainy season, waves can be high, and marine activities might be canceled.
- Midday (12 PM - 3 PM) is the peak heat; outdoor activities are best scheduled for late afternoon.
🚨 Survival Tip! |
For squalls, looking at the sky is often faster than checking a weather app. If you see dark clouds approaching in the distance, it'll likely pour within 20-30 minutes, so head to a café or restaurant at that moment to time it perfectly. |
5. Vietnam Travel FAQs

Q. Isn't July and August in Vietnam too hot?
Temperatures can rise to 91-95°F (33-35°C) in the midday.
However, with proper planning for indoor/outdoor activities, it's definitely manageable.
Plus, it's hot in many parts of the world during this time too! 😂

Q. Will my trip be ruined if I go to Phu Quoc in the summer?
Not at all! It's not constant rain, but rather a pattern of short squalls.
If you're focused on a resort staycation, it's actually the best time for value.
If you're set on marine activities, Nha Trang is a better choice!

Q. Where should I go in summer Vietnam with kids?
I recommend cities with plenty of indoor escape spots and theme parks, like Vinpearl in Nha Trang,
or VinWonders Safari in Phu Quoc.

Q. Should I worry about typhoons in summer Vietnam?
Typhoons become more frequent from September to November,
so July and August are relatively safer months.

Frequently Asked Questions
If I travel to Phu Quoc in the summer during July and August, will it rain all day because it's the rainy season?
Although summer in Phu Quoc is the rainy season, it doesn't rain all day like the monsoon season in Korea. Instead, you can expect squalls that pour for 1 to 2 hours a day before clearing up. During this time, 5-star hotel airtel packages become cheaper, dropping to the ~$320 range, making it a great time to enjoy a resort staycation.
Are there any recommended itineraries to avoid the midday heat of over 33 degrees Celsius when traveling to Da Nang in the summer?
Since the midday heat is quite intense, we recommend sightseeing in the morning and relaxing by the pool in the afternoon. It is a good idea to plan your itinerary so that you can visit the night market in the evening.
Which is the best place among Da Nang, Nha Trang, and Phu Quoc to enjoy marine activities like sea swimming and island hopping tours in July and August?
We recommend Nha Trang, which has the longest dry season lasting from January to August. The sea is calm, making it great for swimming and island hopping tours, and it's also perfect to combine with VinWonders for a one-day itinerary.
How should I handle sudden dark clouds and squalls during a trip to Vietnam in the rainy season?
When a squall hits, it is more convenient to wear a pre-prepared raincoat rather than using an umbrella. If it starts pouring, simply step into a nearby cafe or restaurant, relax, and wait for about 20 to 30 minutes until the rain stops.
