Planning your Spanish adventure? While iconic landmarks are a must-see, the incredible food is often just as exciting!
Having spent extended periods traveling through Spain—exploring vibrant cities like Barcelona, Madrid, Granada, and Seville—I can confidently say that enjoying the delicious cuisine and refreshing drinks is a huge part of the Spanish experience.
There's nothing quite like settling into a local restaurant or bar, savoring a plate of tapas, and sipping a cool beer. In fact, I'm personally thrilled for my upcoming trip to Spain, scheduled for early November 2026, and I'm already counting down the days!
Today, I'm excited to share some of the absolute must-try dishes and drinks you shouldn't miss on your Spanish vacation!
Spain's Signature Dish: Paella
When you think of Spanish food, doesn't paella immediately come to mind?
This iconic dish, cooked in a wide, shallow pan with rice, seafood, meat, and vegetables, is a true Spanish culinary masterpiece.
From classic seafood paella to varieties featuring chicken and vegetables, there's a type for every palate. My personal favorite? The rich and flavorful squid ink paella!

Keep in mind that paella often requires a bit of cooking time after you order, and some restaurants might have a minimum order of two servings, so it's a good idea to check beforehand.
If you're in Spain, I highly recommend dedicating at least one meal to enjoying an authentic, perfectly prepared paella!

Perfect with a Beer!
Calamari Sandwich (Bocadillo de Calamares)
One dish I absolutely insist you try is the Calamari Sandwich, or Bocadillo de Calamares.
"Calamari" means squid, and this simple yet incredibly satisfying dish features crispy fried squid nestled in a fresh baguette.

I still dream about the calamari sandwich I had in Madrid—the taste is unforgettable!
It might not be the fanciest dish, but the combination of crunchy fried squid and soft bread is truly irresistible. It's perfect for a quick, authentic local meal or as a delightful companion to a cold beer.

The Heart of Spanish Cuisine:
Tapas
If you want to sample a variety of Spanish dishes, tapas are your answer!
Tapas are small, savory dishes traditionally enjoyed with an aperitif or alcoholic drink. The selection is incredibly diverse, ranging from marinated olives and gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp) to crispy croquettes and delicious potato dishes.

Ordering several tapas to share with your travel companions is a fantastic way to experience a wide array of Spanish flavors. Plus, spending a relaxed evening at a Spanish bar, enjoying tapas and drinks, is truly the best way to soak in the local atmosphere.
Salty Delights: Jamón
You can't talk about Spanish food without mentioning jamón!
This dry-cured ham, made from the hind leg of a pig and salted, is typically served thinly sliced on its own or with bread. Its distinctive salty flavor and deep aroma make it an ideal pairing for wine or beer.
Jamón varies in type and price depending on the curing method, pig breed, and rearing environment. Be sure to try it at a restaurant or pick some up at a local market to enjoy back at your accommodation during your trip.
Surprisingly Addictive Spanish Olives
If you're an olive lover, you absolutely must try them in Spain!
In Spain, olives are a common and delicious snack served with drinks at bars and restaurants.
These perfectly briny, cured olives are simply fantastic with a glass of wine or beer.
You'll also find a huge variety of olives at local supermarkets, making them a great easy snack to have on hand at your Airbnb or hotel.
For me, discovering these small, authentic local foods is one of the greatest joys of traveling.
Must-Try Spanish Drinks:
Tinto de Verano and Clara
Just as important as the food are the refreshing drinks you'll enjoy in Spain!

Tinto de Verano, meaning "red wine of summer," is a popular Spanish drink made by mixing red wine with a lemon-flavored soda or similar carbonated beverage.
While it might sound similar to sangria, Tinto de Verano is typically simpler and lighter, making it incredibly refreshing. It's sweet, fizzy, and absolutely perfect for sipping on an outdoor terrace on a warm day.
Clara is a beer cocktail, usually made by mixing beer with lemon soda or a lemon-flavored drink. Think of it as a Spanish shandy or lemon beer. It's lighter and more zesty than regular beer, making it a wonderful accompaniment to your meal. It's my personal favorite!
Order some tapas or olives, and pair them with a glass of Tinto de Verano or Clara, and you'll be fully immersed in the Spanish travel vibe!
