During my 3-night trip to Kyoto,
I found a spot that perfectly balanced quality and affordability:
🍀 Sotetsu Fresa Inn Kyoto Kiyomizu Gojo
Total for 3 Nights: ~$227
(Comfort Double Room, Non-smoking)

While searching for a budget-friendly hotel for my mom and me,
I ended up booking the Sotetsu Fresa Inn.
Why Choose Sotetsu Fresa Inn?
Since I spend most of my travel days out exploring, for me, a hotel = just a place to sleep and recharge at night!
Because of that, I didn't feel the need to splurge on an expensive luxury resort.
I initially considered booking a traditional ryokan with an onsen since I was traveling with my mom,
but she actually wasn't that interested in hot springs! Haha.
Since our 2026 itinerary was heavily focused on sightseeing rather than lounging at a resort, my priorities were:
1. Price (most important!), followed closely by a great location and spotless rooms.
✔️ Shijo Karasuma
✔️ Kiyomizu Gojo
I narrowed it down to these two neighborhoods, and since Kiyomizu Gojo offered better rates,
I booked our stay in Kiyomizu Gojo.
Price: ~$77 per night

Agoda | ~$63 |
I used a discount coupon on a local booking app
to secure my 3-night stay, *.*
but I highly recommend comparing prices on platforms
like Agoda to find the absolute lowest rate!

Beyond just looking at the base price,
✅ Make sure to check for available coupons and play around with your dates
to lock in the most budget-friendly deal possible! *.*
2. Hotel Location

The hotel is about a 10-minute walk
from Nishiki Market, the main shopping arcades, and the scenic Kamo River.
The location might seem slightly off the main drag at first,
but it's actually a very manageable and pleasant walk!

In the evenings, when the temperature drops a bit,
strolling back to the hotel along the Kamo River is an absolute dream.

✔️ Direct bus access from Kyoto Station
✔️ Only a 3-minute walk from the nearest bus stop
✔️ A 7-Eleven just 3 minutes away on foot
✔️ A 24-hour large grocery store right across from the 7-Eleven
Having a 7-Eleven practically on our doorstep was fantastic.
My mom and I would grab onigiri (rice balls) and sandwiches
on our way back at night for a quick breakfast the next morning!

Despite the location being slightly removed from the immediate center,
we didn't find it inconvenient at all!
In fact, having the bus stop right around the corner made getting around a breeze.
3. Check-in / Check-out Process

This was my first time experiencing a fully digital, self-service check-in kiosk.
It is incredibly convenient!
You just tap your details into the tablet,
scan your passport, and you're good to go.

For check-out, you simply drop your room key into the slot on the left.
I did wave to a staff member to let them know we were heading out, though! *.*
4. Comfort Double Room Tour

We were assigned an end room on the 10th floor,
and we absolutely loved it.
100% satisfied!
Want to know why?

One side gave us a wide-open view of the bustling street,
and the other side offered a clear view of Kyoto Tower! ㅠㅠ
I honestly didn't have high expectations for a budget hotel,
but the views, both day and night, were spectacular.

Having windows on both the left and right
meant that when we threw open the curtains in the morning, the room was flooded with gorgeous natural light.
It felt so uplifting!
My mom was thrilled with it too.

As is typical in Japan, the room itself is quite compact!
However, there's just enough floor space to fully open a 24-inch suitcase, which is a big plus.
My mom and I managed to pack everything into one shared suitcase for this trip,
but even if you bring two separate suitcases,
you'll find enough room to maneuver *.*

There's a USB port directly next to the bed
making it super easy to charge your phone overnight.
The desk area also features various ports, including Type-C,
so keeping all your devices juiced up won't be an issue!

Keep in mind that standard AC outlets are a bit sparse.
I brought a universal travel adapter with multiple ports, so it wasn't a problem for us! *.*

Because the room is on the smaller side, they've really maximized the space.
The bed frame is elevated, creating a large space underneath to store your luggage.
There's also a deep ledge behind the headboard
which is perfect for keeping your phone, chargers, and small daily essentials
organized and within arm's reach! *.*
Comfort Double Room Bathroom

The bathroom was immaculately clean.
My mom literally said she'd never seen a hotel bathroom maintained so perfectly.
Hahaha!
But seriously, it was sparkling.

They provide plenty of fresh towels,
but if you ever need more, you can easily request extras from the front desk. :)
5. Overall Review & Amenities

Similar to many modern Japanese hotels,
this Kyoto hotel features an "amenity bar" on the 1st floor
where you can grab whatever you need!
They have everything from sleepwear to single-use shampoo, conditioner, coffee, and tea packets. *.*

It's conveniently located right by the elevators,
so you can quickly scan the selection while waiting for your ride up
and grab exactly what you need for the night.
Haha.

For added security, the elevators require you
to tap your room key before you can select a floor!

If you want your room cleaned or just need fresh towels,
you simply stick one of the magnetic signs on the outside of your door before heading out!
They are stored on the inside of your door, so they just snap right on.

✔️ Blue sign: Please clean the room
✔️ Orange sign: Fresh towels only, please

One detail I thought was incredibly thoughtful:
they provide free loaner umbrellas right by the front door!
It's an absolute lifesaver if you're visiting Japan during the rainy season. Haha.
My mom and I headed out for dinner right after checking in
and realized we forgot our umbrellas upstairs.
Thanks to these complimentary umbrellas, we stayed completely dry! Haha.
*Just make sure to return them after use!

While the room was on the smaller side,
the bathroom was exceptionally clean,
the free 24/7 amenity bar was a great touch,
and most importantly, the view from our room was fantastic!
Whether you're a solo traveler or exploring as a couple,
this is a phenomenal budget-friendly hotel in Kyoto. Highly recommend! :)
