1. Sitges: Your Perfect Coastal Retreat

Sitges is a beautiful resort town located just about 30 to 40 minutes from Barcelona by train. It's one of the most prominent towns in the Catalonia region, particularly beloved for its stunning beaches and charming, quaint streets, making it an incredibly popular day trip destination from Barcelona.

As you'd expect from a coastal resort, references to the sea are everywhere you look.

Even the murals in Sitges feel like scenes from a small film. If you're on a tour, you'll typically disembark and walk a bit further to reach the stunning coastline.

If you choose to visit independently, you can easily depart from a Barcelona train station. Simply head to Sitges from Barcelona Sants station. The journey takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes, and a round-trip train ticket costs around ~$10. When purchasing your tickets, search for 'SITGES'.

I opted for a combined tour that included Montserrat, but I realized that if Montserrat isn't on your itinerary, Sitges alone is definitely worth the train ride.

2. Exploring Sitges Town

True to its reputation as a resort town, Sitges felt incredibly relaxed and serene. Every narrow alley was charming and picturesque, offering countless photo opportunities. Honestly, almost anywhere you point your camera, you're bound to capture a beautiful shot.

Sitges is also home to a very famous Mermaid statue. Legend has it that if you touch her hand, you'll be destined to return to Sitges again.

If you look closely at the Mermaid's hand, you'll see that while the bronze statue is mostly green with age, her hand is polished bright gold from countless touches by hopeful visitors.

We had about two hours of free time in Sitges. Our guide provided a list of recommended restaurants before we disembarked, but I chose to explore the town more instead of dining. I spent my time taking photos and simply sitting to soak in the atmosphere.

I later heard from other travelers that meals tend to be served quite slowly in Sitges, likely due to the relaxed, leisurely pace of the town. While the food might be delicious, the wait could eat into your precious free time. So, it's worth deciding if you want to prioritize exploring or dining during your visit.

Sitges is also quite famous for hosting its annual Film Festival, and as I walked around, it became clear why this town is the perfect cinematic setting.

It was a bit windy, but the sunshine was glorious, and a palpable sense of tranquility permeated every corner of the town.

3. Sitges Park

Near the train station, there's a charming small park. Since I opted to spend my free time exploring the town, I didn't have a chance for a sit-down meal. Instead, I grabbed a baguette and some fresh fruit from a local shop and enjoyed a leisurely picnic in the park.

The fruit I bought from a street vendor was surprisingly affordable and paired perfectly with a cold soda. This combination was absolutely spot-on, giving me a wonderfully authentic, local vibe. Both Sitges and Montserrat offered delightful, albeit different, experiences. If you're visiting Barcelona, these two destinations are absolutely essential, not optional!

While you can opt for a tour like I did, or even take the train independently, for Montserrat, a tour is definitely recommended due to the longer journey and potential complexities of getting there on your own.
