My Japan trip was quite long, and I felt it would be a shame to only explore Tokyo, so I extended my adventure to Osaka!

For inter-city travel, I hopped on the Shinkansen.

And I'm even going to share my secret to booking it with a discount!

1. Why I Chose the Shinkansen

The Shinkansen is Japan's high-speed rail, zooming at speeds of over 300 km/h~!

It connects major Japanese cities like Tokyo, Osaka,

Kyoto, Nagoya, and Fukuoka, making it a popular mode of transport for travelers.

Perk ①

You could travel by plane, but

the Shinkansen's boarding process is much simpler.

There's no need for security checks like at an airport,

and Shinkansen stations are usually located right in the city center,

making it super convenient to get to your hotel or tourist attractions.

Perk ②

For popular routes like "Tokyo-Osaka," it's even more efficient.

Including travel to the airport and waiting times, the total travel time can

sometimes be faster by Shinkansen than by plane.

That's exactly why I chose the Shinkansen when traveling

from Tokyo to Osaka~

The seats are spacious, and it's convenient for using the restroom,

or enjoying a bento box on board.

Its punctuality rate is incredibly high,

making it perfect for planning your travel itinerary!

2. Shinkansen Types & Prices

There are three types of Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen trains

connecting Tokyo~Osaka~Fukuoka.

Train	Features	Travel Time(Tokyo Sta.→Shin-Osaka Sta.)
Nozomi	Fastest, fewest stops	2 hours 30 minutes
Hikari	Intermediate, stops at major stations only	3 hours
Kodama	Stops at all stations	4 hours

Just so you know, normally, all train prices are the same.

So, it's definitely beneficial to take the one with a shorter travel time if you can.

‼️However, during Japan's Obon period (a holiday similar to Chuseok) from

August 7th to 16th, 2026, Nozomi trains do not offer non-reserved seats, which makes them more expensive.

3. Booking Shinkansen on Klook

You can purchase Shinkansen tickets at local ticket offices

or book online.

I opted to book through an online site.

Being able to enter with a QR code was incredibly convenient!

Plus, there's a 0-fee for online booking, and,

discount coupon application was also possible!

~$95 → ~$92 (A ~$2 discount)

4. Traveling from Tokyo to Osaka

Seating Hacks

First, Shinkansen seats come in

Non-reserved (unassigned), Reserved, and Green Car (First Class) options.

Among these, the non-reserved seats are perfectly fine! I booked non-reserved seats myself~

Car 1 and Car 2 of the Shinkansen train are all non-reserved seats,

and with a 2-3 seating arrangement, there are plenty of seats. Once you find a spot,

you don't need to give up your seat for anyone else.

During weekday afternoons, it was actually quite spacious,

but during weekends, public holidays, and other times when local travel is high,

it's best to book online in advance!

💡Tip: For "Non-reserved" seats, if you miss your booked train time,

you can simply take the next available train.

I actually missed my booked Shinkansen time once,

and when I asked a staff member, they told me to just take the next train.

It seemed like it was valid for any train on the day your ticket is for!

- Shinkansen Seating Booking Tips -

❶ When traveling from Tokyo to Osaka,

sit on the right side to see Mount Fuji.

❷ Between the very last seats of the train,

there's space for luggage and suitcases.

It's great to stretch your legs comfortably!

❸ There are power outlets under the seats,

but you'll need a 110V plug adapter to use them.
