When you think of Japan, one of the first foods that comes to mind has to be ramen, wouldn't you agree?
While each region in Japan boasts its own famous and unique style of ramen, Tokyo is where you can find a fascinating collection of these distinct ramen varieties from all over the country.
Today, for those of you visiting Tokyo, we're excited to share five fantastic ramen spots in Shinjuku – a neighborhood you'll likely visit at least once!
Just so you know, all these places were visited and paid for out of our own pockets!
Top 1. Menya Hiro

Menya Hiro (麺屋ひろ) |
Operating Hours: 6:00 PM ~ 3:00 PM the next day Closed: None Location: 5-minute walk from Shinjuku Station, Seibu Shinjuku Station |
Our first must-try spot is Menya Hiro, a ramen shop located in Shinjuku's Kabukicho.
It's essentially a late-night ramen spot, open almost 24 hours, making it perfect for a comforting meal late at night or even a hangover cure.

Since they use a tonkotsu (pork bone) based broth, you might notice a distinct, savory aroma when you step inside.
If you're not used to such smells, it might take a moment to adjust.

Aside from variations in toppings, the ramen here is primarily Iekei style, featuring seaweed and spinach.
The noodles have a lovely chewy texture, and the fresh vegetables added as toppings offer a delightful crispness.

What truly stood out was the broth – while it's tonkotsu-based, it wasn't overly heavy, and I could also taste the savory richness of chicken broth.
Some might find the broth a bit salty, but it was so incredibly delicious that I just couldn't stop eating it.
Personally, among the five ramen spots we're introducing today, this was my absolute favorite.
Top 2. Kuramu

Kaijiru Chukasoba Kuramu 貝出汁中華そば くらむ 歌舞伎町 |
Operating Hours: 11:00 AM ~ 7:00 AM the next day Closed: None Location: 5-minute walk from Seibu Shinjuku Station |
Our second ramen recommendation is Kuramu, a restaurant specializing in ramen with a delicious clam-based broth.
It's just a 5-minute walk from Seibu Shinjuku Station, and being in Shinjuku Kabukicho, it also operates during late-night hours.

As its name suggests, all the ramen here uses a clam-based broth, characterized by an incredibly refreshing and clean soup.
Plus, they even have a garlic ramen on the menu, a flavor profile that truly hits the spot for many!

Just imagining clam broth with garlic – can't you already picture that wonderfully refreshing and umami-rich soup?

I visited late in the evening and truly enjoyed my meal here. The broth isn't too heavy, so it felt quite comfortable on the stomach!
If you love a refreshing and clear broth, this place comes highly recommended!
Top 3. Mendou Nishiki

Mendou Nishiki Shinjuku Kabukicho Branch (Mendou Nishiki) |
Operating Hours: 6:00 PM ~ 1:00 PM (Tues-Sun) 12:00 AM ~ 1:00 PM (Mon) Closed: None Location: 5-minute walk from Seibu Shinjuku Station |
Our third ramen spot is Mendou Nishiki, conveniently located near Kuramu, which we just introduced.
Also situated in Kabukicho, it features unique operating hours, opening at night and serving customers until the morning.

And since it's Kabukicho, you'll find instax photos of hosts and staff from nearby concept bars displayed,
giving you a truly authentic Japanese vibe.

What's unique about this place is that it features
duck toppings instead of pork chashu.
As a result, the broth isn't a rich tonkotsu,
but rather a clear, umami-rich chicken base.
Even though it's a chicken broth, the shoyu (soy sauce) flavor is blended in perfectly,
ensuring the noodles and soup harmonize beautifully.
The broth was light, clean, and truly delicious.
I ranked it third because it's not as refreshing as a clam-based broth, but since it's light and chicken-based,
I think it's the perfect ramen to enjoy in the evening.
Top 4. Yamamotoya

Yokohama Ramen Yamamotoya |
Operating Hours: 10:00 AM ~ 12:00 AM (Midnight) Closed: None Location: 3-minute walk from Shinjuku Station |
Our fourth ramen spot is Yamamotoya,
located near Shinjuku Station.
As the name suggests, it's an Iekei ramen shop, and it's so popular with locals that there's often a wait
even late at night.

After getting your ticket from the machine at the entrance,
you can specify your preferences for noodle firmness, flavor strength, and amount of oil.
If you're unsure, just say 'Zenbu Futsuu' (all normal).

The noodles were slightly thick, similar to kalguksu noodles,
and the soup was incredibly rich and quite salty.
Despite the richness, the strong flavor made it delicious.
If you find it a bit too rich,
there's minced garlic on each table,
so you can add it to your liking for an even tastier experience.
(I bet it would be even better with rice!)

First of all, the staff are incredibly friendly, and with a high Tabelog rating of 3.59,
I highly recommend visiting if you're curious about the ramen that Japanese locals love.
Top 5. Torisoba Kaguraya

Torisoba Kaguraya (Ramen Kaguraya) |
Operating Hours: 11:30 AM ~ 2:00 AM the next day (Sundays until 12:00 AM / Midnight) Closed: None Location: 3-minute walk from Seibu-Shinjuku Station |
Our fifth and final recommendation is Torisoba Kaguraya,
located west of Seibu-Shinjuku Station.
There aren't many places in this area open until the early hours, so it's quite rare to find a spot with such long operating hours.
They have several ramen varieties, but I tried
the Assari Tori Soba.

Its distinguishing feature was a creamy yet clear broth, similar to Samgyetang (Korean ginseng chicken soup),
with a subtle sheen of chicken oil floating on top.
The broth literally tasted similar to Samgyetang,
offering a truly wonderful umami flavor.

However, since the broth was quite thin and light,
it didn't harmonize perfectly with the noodles.
I think it might have been even more delicious if I had ordered the richer broth.
I'd recommend this place if you're looking for a white, clean broth for a refreshing hangover cure at the end of your night!
Today, I introduced you to five amazing ramen spots
near Shinjuku, Tokyo.
These are all places I personally visited and paid for, and since I went to all of them late at night,
I highly recommend them if you're looking for a late-night snack.
But are you curious about other great restaurants beyond ramen?
If so, I've compiled another list of fantastic eateries below,
so take a look and plan your visit!

Menya Hiro operates from 6:00 PM until 3:00 PM the following day, making it practically a 24-hour late-night ramen shop. It serves Iekei ramen with a Tonkotsu (pork bone) base. While it has a pungent aroma, the umami of chicken broth is added, resulting in a salty yet addictive soup.
At Kuramu, all ramen features a refreshing clam broth base. Among its menu offerings, there is also a garlic ramen, which provides a cool and savory broth that is sure to appeal to Korean palates.
Mendou Nishiki is characterized by its duck meat topping instead of the usual pork chashu. The broth is not a rich Tonkotsu but a clear, savory chicken-based broth mixed with shoyu (soy sauce) flavor, making it light and clean.
At Yamamotoya, after purchasing a meal ticket and entering, you can tell the staff your preferences for the amount of noodles, flavor, and oil. If you're unsure, simply say 'Zenbu Futsuu' (all normal) for a standard order. You can also add grated garlic available on the table to enjoy it to your liking.
