When you think of Japan, ramen is probably the first dish that comes to mind,
and Tokyo is famous for its incredible food scene, right?
Tokyo boasts a plethora of famous ramen establishments,
and among them, there's a distinct style called 'Iekei Ramen.'
Today, I'm excited to introduce you to a fantastic Iekei Ramen spot near Shinjuku –
Yokohama Ramen 'Yamamoto-ya'!
Tokyo Ramen Restaurant Recommendation in Japan

Yokohama Ramen Yamamoto-ya |
Operating Hours: 10:00 AM - Midnight Closed: None Location: 3-minute walk from Shinjuku Station |
The ramen shop I'm recommending today, located near Shinjuku, Tokyo,
is Yamamoto-ya.

📍 They are open daily until midnight with no days off,
and since it's just a 3-minute walk from Shinjuku Station,
it's the perfect spot to grab some ramen anytime you're craving it.
The Yokohama Ramen in the restaurant's name refers to
a style of ramen that originated in the Yokohama area,
and it's also famously known as Iekei Ramen.
It's known for its tonkotsu-shoyu (pork bone and soy sauce) base, enriched with chicken oil,
which creates an incredibly umami-rich soup that's hugely popular.
Yamamoto-ya is so beloved by locals that there's often a wait even late at night.
💡 For your reference, if a restaurant's name includes the character '家' (ya/ie),
it's highly likely to be an authentic Iekei Ramen establishment!

✅ Plus, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM,
you can enjoy ramen for 700 yen,
and rice refills are free.
So, if you have some free time in the morning,
I highly recommend visiting during this early hour.
Yamamoto-ya Menu and Ordering Guide
Next, I'll walk you through the menu and how to order.

Ordering involves purchasing a meal ticket from a machine outside the restaurant.
If there's a queue, get your ticket first,
then join the line outside.

Menu
Special Ramen 1,100 yen
Regular Ramen 900 yen
Chashu Ramen (Regular) 1,200 yen
Rice (unlimited refills) 200 yen
Regular Rice 150 yen
The main menu is as listed above,
and an additional 100 yen is charged for increasing noodle size.
You can also add rice for 100-200 yen,
and the 200 yen rice option includes unlimited refills.
Iekei Ramen's broth is especially famous for how well it pairs with rice,
so I highly recommend ordering a bowl of rice with your ramen.

I ordered the medium-sized ramen for 1,000 yen,
and once you enter the restaurant and find a seat,
you simply hand this meal ticket to the staff.

The staff member will then speak to you in Japanese,
asking about your preferences for the ramen's noodles, flavor, and amount of oil.
You can state your preferences accordingly.
If you're unsure, just say 'Zenbu futsuu (or nomaru) de'
and they will prepare it with standard settings (medium flavor, etc.).
Yamamoto-ya's Interior Atmosphere

The restaurant is quite cozy, with just 14 counter seats.
I got lucky when I visited, as there was no wait, but a line of locals quickly formed right after!

Each seat comes prepared with garlic, ginger, and cutlery, and you'll find tissues tucked away discreetly under the table.

And for drinks, you can help yourself to water from the dispenser tucked away in the corner.

But the most unique touch had to be the grated garlic! It's not common to find places in Japan that offer garlic, so seeing it readily available was a delightful surprise. And when you add it to the rich ramen, the flavors just harmonize perfectly – I'm sure it would capture the hearts (and palates!) of global foodies.
My Take on Iekei Ramen
Now, let's dive into my honest review of the ramen I ordered!

I chose my noodles firm, the broth rich, and the oil level regular. And honestly, just the sight of it had my mouth watering!

What makes Iekei Ramen stand out is its rich tonkotsu-based soup, generously topped with savory chicken oil, vibrant spinach, tender chashu, and crisp nori seaweed. And as you can see, the noodles are delightfully thick!

While wrapping noodles in the nori is a popular way to enjoy it, I noticed many locals ordered rice alongside their ramen. They'd then combine the seaweed, rice, and the flavorful broth – a true taste of local dining!
The broth, unmistakably tonkotsu-based, was surprisingly not overwhelming. Instead, it offered a deep, rich umami flavor, likely thanks to that delicious chicken oil.

While the ramen soup leaned slightly salty, its umami depth created a wonderful harmony. For those who prefer a milder taste, it might feel a tad strong.
But here's a pro tip: if you find it a bit salty, adding a generous scoop of that grated garlic can make it much more balanced and incredibly satisfying!
Iekei Ramen: Bold & Flavorful, with a Salty Kick

Yamamotoya's Iekei Ramen offered a unique spin on the ramen I'm used to.
Despite its tonkotsu base, it wasn't overly heavy; instead, it delivered a powerful punch of umami. For those who might find it a touch salty, I truly believe it's an absolute game-changer when paired with rice!
And here's a fantastic bonus: if you order the large size rice, refills are available, so you can truly satisfy your hunger! Visiting on an empty stomach will definitely enhance your experience.
Plus, they're open until midnight, making it the perfect spot for a satisfying late-night meal or even a comforting hangover cure before you head back to your accommodation.
So, take note of the Iekei Ramen spot I shared today, and I truly hope you get to savor a delicious meal there!
