Shibuya Sky was

at the absolute top of my bucket list.

But here's the catch: if you miss the booking window,

the highly coveted sunset and night view slots sell out in the blink of an eye.

I didn't know this and hesitated a bit too long,

and ended up missing out on my dream time slot.

Now that I've been there myself, I completely understand why

everyone is so serious about snagging tickets 2 weeks in advance.

1. Why You Must Book Shibuya Sky in Advance

For Shibuya Sky,

booking online in advance is highly recommended.

✅ It's cheaper online than buying at the gate,

✅ and since there's a strict visitor cap,

the golden hour and night slots are always the first to go.

If your goal is to catch the sunset or the sparkling city lights,

I highly recommend booking at midnight, exactly 2 weeks before your visit date.

2. How to Book / Ticket Prices / Opening Hours

You can book tickets for the Shibuya Sky Observatory

on the official website as well as various travel booking platforms.

If you find the official site a bit tricky to navigate,

using a booking platform works perfectly fine too.

(I'll break down the minor differences below!)

Tickets for Shibuya Sky go on sale

at midnight, exactly 2 weeks before your visit.

Since navigating the official website was a bit of a hassle for me,

I chose to book through Klook.

Just a heads-up: on third-party travel platforms,

tickets might not open up at the exact stroke of midnight.

(This applies to Klook and all other booking platforms.)

So, when exactly do they open?

They usually open around 12:05 AM to 12:07 AM, just past midnight.

👉👉 If you don't see the tickets even after 5 minutes,

just keep refreshing the page.

Sometimes there's a tiny delay!

I logged on around 12:20 AM, and even then,

the peak golden hour slots were already selling out fast.

For example, if you plan to visit on July 25:

👉 Official Website: Bookings open from midnight on July 12

👉 Travel Platforms (Klook, etc.): Bookings open about 5 minutes (or slightly more) past midnight

Ticket prices were cheaper booked online than bought at the venue.

And booking platforms are actually a tiny bit cheaper than the official site.

Located right at the famous Tokyo Shibuya Scramble Crossing,

is Shibuya Sky Scramble (Egg!) Square!

It's directly connected to Shibuya Station,

and since the building is so tall, it's super easy to spot.

Honestly, it's actually easier to find from street level

rather than trying to navigate from inside Shibuya Station!

Even with all the signs, that station is a total maze...

When you visit,

don't just take the regular shopping mall elevators.

Follow the dedicated 'SHIBUYA SKY' signs

and hop on the dedicated elevator

to the 14th-floor entrance, where the ticket counter is,

and then head on up to the observatory!

The signs are really clear, so you won't have any trouble finding it!

Arrived at the 14th-floor ticket counter!

I ended up visiting during the middle of the day.

There are strict entry times, so make sure to double-check

the booking details carefully once you secure your ticket!

After booking through Klook, I got a QR code.

No need to print anything out! I just showed the QR code at the entrance

and walked straight in. Super easy and seamless.

Once inside, you store all your things in the free lockers

before heading out to the outdoor observatory deck.

You're only allowed to bring absolute essentials like your phone,

and almost all other bags/items must be left in the free lockers.

So, how was it visiting during a summer afternoon, you ask...?

Even though I missed the sunset, the sky was unbelievably clear,

giving me a perfect bird's-eye view of Shibuya.

The view was honestly way beyond my expectations!

You can even spot Tokyo Tower in the distance.

I totally get why this place is on everyone's bucket list...

Plus, the summer sky was a gorgeous, vivid blue,

making all my photos turn out absolutely stunning.

It perfectly captured that breezy, nostalgic Japanese summer vibe! ✨

This is actually a shot I took of my sibling! Haha, mwahaha! 😎

I’m so proud of how well it turned out!

Everything was perfect... except for one tiny catch.

A Japanese summer afternoon is WAY hotter than you can ever imagine.

It was beyond hot—absolutely scorching, like my skin was burning...

The outdoor rooftop deck has almost no shade,

and because you get the direct sunlight, the real-feel temperature was incredibly high.

If you're visiting the deck in the middle of a summer day,

you absolutely MUST!!! bring a light cardigan or cover-up.

You can't bring things like parasols onto the rooftop deck, T_T

So in the end, we had to head indoors while we were still taking photos.

Honestly, I was determined to power through the heat just to get that one perfect shot...

That was my game plan, but...

In midsummer, when the rooftop temperature spikes,

they sometimes guide everyone down to the indoor observatory for safety.. T_T

Yep, that happened to us... ㅠㅠㅠ

We had to head inside before we could even get a proper shot ㅠㅠ

‼️ Quick Tip to Know Before You Go ‼️

Shibuya Sky is split into an indoor observation gallery and an outdoor rooftop deck.

The outdoor deck is highly weather-dependent. If it’s extremely hot, raining, or if there's lightning, the outdoor area will likely close. Even during your visit, you might be asked to move to the indoor gallery depending on sudden weather changes.

Still, I tried my absolute best

to snap some more photos indoors! ~☆

Managed to get some indoor shots too!!

When it comes to getting the perfect photo,

scouting out the best spots is key!

1️⃣ Indoor/Outdoor Corner Zones (you'll need to line up)

2️⃣ On the globe-shaped compass sculpture on the outdoor deck

3️⃣ On the artificial grass at the outdoor heliport

4️⃣ The outdoor escalator (photographer stands on the adjacent stairs)

1️⃣ There are several indoor corner zones! Some spots have higher glass walls. Avoid the ones with low glass walls ❌, because the safety netting will show up in your shot... which is unfortunately where we ended up taking ours.

4️⃣ The person being photographed rides the escalator, and the photographer stands on the stairs next to it to shoot!

We were rushing before getting escorted inside, so we hurriedly snapped it directly from the escalator.

If you look at the photos I shared earlier,

it looks like there was almost no one there.

But actually, I just photoshopped them out using AI! ~☆

First tip: Just snap as many photos as you can!

Of course, it would be ideal if the original shot was clean,

but with the massive crowds, that’s almost impossible. ㅠㅠ

After all, photography is about taking 100 shots to get that one keeper, right?

Later, load your photo into an AI editor and try this prompt:

'Please erase everyone in the photo except for the girl in the center wearing a sky-blue dress with long straight hair.'

Just like that, the crowd is gone

poof! Seamlessly edited out.

Also, I think a sky blue + white outfit combo

looks absolutely stunning here! 💙

Even though we missed the sunset and night view, the photos still turned out great, right?

5. When is the Best Time to Visit? Final Verdict

After visiting in person,

I can say that Shibuya Sky's daytime view is absolutely beautiful on its own.

But after seeing it...

I couldn't help but wonder how gorgeous the sunset and night views must be, haha.

If you really want to experience the sunset and night view,

booking 2 weeks in advance is absolute must.

Don't make the same mistake I did by missing the booking window.

As soon as your travel dates are locked in,

check to see if your preferred time slots are open!

Especially if you have your heart set on the sunset or city lights,

I highly recommend checking ticket availability as your very first step.
