ⓒ Ssoejini

Hello, I'm Ssoejini, your traveling companion!
Hey everyone, are you stressing out trying to snag tickets for
Shibuya Sky
often called a must-do for any Tokyo trip these days?
I certainly got a taste of the fierce ticket battle myself when I tried to get that famous escalator shot this time around.
Shaking my hands in front of my laptop at midnight two weeks ago,
I finally secured those precious tickets!
So today, to save you from similar struggles,
I'm going to meticulously lay out all the golden tips – from the differences between the official website and Klook, to how to tackle payment errors in one go.
Ready to book your Shibuya Sky tickets and

1. Official Website vs. Klook: Comparing Midnight Booking Platforms

First, you might be wondering where to book your tickets, so I went ahead and tried both options myself.
Let me cut to the chase!
If you want to secure a Golden Hour slot (1 hour before sunset), it's definitely the
official website;
if you prioritize easy payment, then Klook is your best bet.
The official website opens precisely at midnight (00:00) two weeks before your visit, but Klook usually releases tickets 3-6 minutes later, likely due to system synchronization.
Honestly, if you don't mind missing the absolute golden hour by a bit, convenient Klook is truly the best... haha.
While the official website has the most tickets, it often presents a challenge with international payment errors. Klook, on the other hand, lets you zip through payment with Kakao Pay or Naver Pay, which is much better for your peace of mind.
Category | Official Website | Klook |
Ticket Quantity | Most Abundant (Holds entire inventory) | Less than official website (Allocated system) |
Opening Time | 14 days prior, 00:00 sharp | 14 days prior, 00:03-06 AM |
Payment Method | International cards (Travel Wallet recommended) | Domestic cards + various easy payment options |
Difficulty | High (Frequent payment errors) | Low (Familiar and fast) |

2. Catching the Sunset! Booking Your Ticket for an Hour Before Sunset

The absolute magic of Shibuya Sky is experiencing the full 'daytime-sunset-night view' trifecta, right? That's why you absolutely *must* aim for entry 1 hour before sunset.

The official website's main screen often displays sunrise and sunset times. Since these vary by season, make sure to Google 'Tokyo sunset time' and check the weather before your visit!
I managed to get a 4 PM entry ticket. After queuing for the dedicated elevator on the 1st floor, I stored my luggage on the 14th floor before heading up.
By late February, I wanted to capture the blue skies of daytime, the sunset, and even the night view,
so I went with plenty of time to get all the shots!
Honestly, I think a 5 PM reservation would have been enough.

However, if you go in early, there are plenty of lockers,
and you can comfortably sit on the chairs by the panoramic glass windows inside, just zoning out
and waiting for the sun to set, making it much more relaxing.
3. Shibuya Sky Reservations: Travel Wallet Card
If you've decided to book through the official website, just remember two things:
your Travel Wallet card and your name in Katakana.

Regular credit cards often get rejected during the payment stage,
but I used my Travel Wallet card
and it went through in one go, with no fees! Haha.
And when the name input field asks for Katakana,
if you get flustered, it's already too late.
Make sure to convert your name to Katakana on a portal site beforehand
and copy it into a notepad.
If you're furiously clicking to get in right at 00:00,
and then you're busy converting your name,
those golden time slots will already be gone! ㅠㅠ
Just by preparing these two things,
your success rate will go up by 200%!
For a pro tip on logging in to the official site beforehand,
I'll cover it in another post :)
You'll seriously regret it if you don't read it~!
4. Shibuya Sky Observatory Time Slot Wrap-up

Ultimately, booking Shibuya Sky isn't about having more information;
it's a battle of speed.
If you want those golden time slots, try your luck with a travel card on the official website.
If you prefer to book comfortably, even for a slightly less busy time,
I recommend Klook.
The difference is clear now, right~?
Platform Choice: For sunset times, the official website (opens 00:00);
for convenience, Klook (opens 00:05) is recommended.
Payment Pro Tip: When using the official website, a Travel Wallet card and
preparing your name in Katakana beforehand are essential.
Optimal Time: Check Tokyo's sunset time and
secure your ticket at least 1 hour before.

Alright, have you bought your tickets now?
Then, in the next post, I'll be back with a real-life review,
covering the Shibuya Sky entrance route that even those prone to getting lost can find in one go,
and my efforts to capture those perfect 'once-in-a-lifetime' shots at the observatory!

Frequently Asked Questions
Which platform is better for booking Shibuya Sky tickets: the official website or Klook?
If you're aiming for the 'golden hour' about an hour before sunset, the official website is advantageous as it has more tickets available and opens exactly at 00:00 two weeks before your visit date. If you prioritize payment convenience, Klook is recommended, as it opens 3 to 6 minutes later but offers easy payment options.
What time slot should I book to enjoy all three views—daytime, sunset, and nighttime—at Shibuya Sky?
To see everything from daytime to nighttime, you should aim for an entry time about an hour before Tokyo's sunset. Based on the author's experience in late February, a 4 PM entry ticket was sufficient, and a 5 PM reservation would also likely have been possible.
What is the best way to reduce payment errors and increase the success rate when booking tickets on the Shibuya Sky official website?
When booking on the official website, regular credit cards often cause payment errors, so it is recommended to use a 'Travel Wallet' card. Additionally, preparing your 'Katakana name' in advance by converting it for the name input field can save time.
Besides a Travel Wallet card, what else do I need to prepare for booking on the Shibuya Sky official website?
When booking on the official website, in addition to using a Travel Wallet card, it is essential to convert your name into Katakana and copy it to a notepad. You should log in beforehand and be ready to paste your Katakana name immediately to secure a golden hour reservation exactly at 00:00.
