Setsugetsuka Hakone Review 2026: Free Private Onsen
Escape Tokyo to Tokinoyu Setsugetsuka in Hakone. Enjoy free private hot springs and traditional kaiseki dining just steps from Gora Station.

Hakone Onsen Ryokan
Setsugetsuka

When it comes to experiencing an authentic Japanese onsen ryokan,
Hakone is arguably the best destination.
As the premier hot spring town near Tokyo
boasting real sulfur springs, it's an absolute must-visit.

Between soaking in the hot springs morning and night
and indulging in an elaborate
traditional kaiseki feast,
a one-night stay flies by in a flash..🥲

Ryokans often carry a reputation for being quite expensive,
but Setsugetsuka in Hakone stands out because
guests can use the private family baths completely free of charge.
Not having to worry about hidden fees is a massive perk!
Plus, it's incredibly accessible.
Located less than a 5-minute walk from Gora Station,
it's the perfect itinerary stop for car-free travelers!

🚊 Hakone Tozan Railway (Orange Line) - 40 mins to Gora Station |

To get to Setsugetsuka, simply board the
Hakone Tozan Railway from Hakone-Yumoto Station.
It will take you straight there.

Once you get off at Gora Station,
the ryokan is within a 5-minute walk.
Among all the ryokans in Hakone,
this is arguably one of the easiest to find :)

A quick tip for booking Hakone ryokans in 2026:
Rates from June to August are generally cheaper than in the winter.
This makes summer an excellent time to visit.

You can often book a room with a private terrace onsen
for almost half the price of the peak winter season.
If you've been wanting to experience a luxury ryokan
without breaking the bank, this is your chance!

The Japanese-Western Room
Hakone Onsen Ryokan Setsugetsuka

I opted for the
Japanese-Western room,
which features traditional tatami mats paired with comfortable twin beds.

The room is quite spacious.
They even provide a convenient spa basket
(complete with towels and tabi socks) to take down to the hot springs.

This room type also includes a private open-air bath
connected directly to the shower area.
The Onsen Experience

Beyond your private room bath,
all guests have complimentary access
to the large public baths and private family baths.

The large public bath
features authentic thermal water with a distinct sulfur scent.
It leaves your skin feeling incredibly soft and smooth.

The bathing area is expansive,
divided into outdoor pools

and indoor pools.
Pro tip: If you head down right after check-in,
it's usually empty,
allowing you to enjoy a peaceful, relaxing soak.

There are also 3 private family baths.
If the light at the entrance is on,
it means the bath is currently occupied.
Simply choose an empty one and lock the door behind you.
Each of the three baths has a different style, making it fun to try them all!

After your soak,
treat yourself to complimentary ice cream..💛

The path to the hot springs winds through a small forest area,
offering fresh mountain air and pure relaxation.
Given how many incredible shared baths are available,
I honestly felt a standard room without a private bath
would have been more than enough! Haha.
Why You MUST Add Dinner

Most restaurants in Hakone close early in the evening.
If you don't book a dinner package at your ryokan,
you'll likely struggle to find a place to eat.

We opted for the half-board (dinner included) plan,
and the multi-course kaiseki featured an amazing spread of
sashimi, hot pot rice, and sukiyaki.
Japanese wagyu beef is truly on another level—
melt-in-your-mouth tender and perfectly marbled! ^^

Setsugetsuka really opened my eyes to
the charm of Hakone ryokans near Tokyo.
I highly recommend it for couples
or family vacations!
My ultimate recommendation:
Book a more affordable room without a private bath,
but make sure to include dinner!
