Sawayaka Hamburg is more than just a restaurant; it's a true local gem that draws both international visitors and Japanese locals, often with significant wait times. To preserve its unique regional identity, this beloved brand operates its branches exclusively within Shizuoka Prefecture.
This means that if you want to savor Shizuoka's signature hamburg steak, you simply have to visit the prefecture itself! 😚
1. Fujinishiki Branch

The Fujinishiki branch has slightly different opening hours: 10:30 AM on weekends and 10:45 AM on weekdays. They are closed every Thursday and typically serve until 10:00 PM.
This location is conveniently located about a 10-minute walk from the Dream Bridge, and there's a spacious parking lot behind the restaurant, making it easy to visit if you're driving.

Upon arrival, I registered at the waiting machine right by the entrance. Even though I visited on a weekday during an off-peak hour, I still had to wait about 40 minutes! 🫠
I was one of the few foreigners there; almost everyone else waiting was a local Japanese patron, which truly confirmed its status as an authentic local hotspot!

A quick tip: the waiting machine only supports Japanese, and your number will be called out in Japanese. It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with how your waiting number sounds in Japanese beforehand.

The ambiance at Shizuoka's Sawayaka Hamburg felt like stepping into a cozy family restaurant from a Japanese manga. The warm, wood-toned interior created a truly inviting and comfortable atmosphere.
2. The Menu

As the name suggests, hamburg steaks are the star of the show at Sawayaka, near Dream Bridge. They offer a fantastic variety, with options to suit every palate and two different sizes, so you can choose exactly what you're craving.

The most popular item on the menu at this Shizuoka hotspot is the Kenkotsu Hamburg. It comes with a dramatic tableside performance where the thick patty is cut in half and seared right in front of you – a must-see for first-time visitors!
You can choose between two sizes: the larger 8.8 oz (250g) patty, perfect for most adults, or the slightly smaller 7.0 oz (200g) option, ideal for lighter appetites or children.
3. Shizuoka's Signature Dining Experience

If you visit Sawayaka during lunch hours, which run until 3:00 PM, your order comes with a complimentary soup and a choice of rice or bread. I barely made it, ordering at 2:58 PM, and was thrilled to snag the lunch set!
You can upgrade your rice to a larger portion for a small extra fee (around ~$0.35).

Their draft beer reminded me a bit of a crisp wheat beer, light and refreshing – a perfect pairing for the hearty meal.
About 10 minutes after ordering, my hamburg arrived. I didn't realize until later that I'd missed the famous table-side cutting performance because I just picked 'anything' off the menu, not the popular Kenkotsu Hamburg! 🤣🤣
But even without the show, the hamburg itself was a spectacle. Be warned: it splatters a *lot* of oil!

The staff will tell you to hold up a paper shield before they set it down. Take their advice – this thing sizzles and pops more than you'd expect, so definitely use that shield!

Sawayaka Hamburg uses 100% pure beef – no fillers, no breadcrumbs, just incredible, unadulterated meat. The flavor was out of this world, with a perfect smoky char and juices that burst with every bite. It was so tender and flavorful, I was utterly captivated!

I've shared my experience at Sawayaka Hamburg, a Shizuoka restaurant you can only find in this region, and honestly, it was the best hamburg steak I've had anywhere in Japan! When I think of my trip to Shizuoka, this hamburg comes to mind right after the majestic Mount Fuji.
While I visited the branch near Yumeno Ohashi (Dream Bridge), there are about 28 other locations across Shizuoka Prefecture, so you're never too far from this culinary delight. Make sure to add it to your itinerary!
No, Sawayaka Hamburg operates branches only within Shizuoka Prefecture to preserve its identity as a local brand. Therefore, it's a local delicacy you can only savor during your trip to Shizuoka.
The Fujinishiki branch opens at 10:30 AM on weekends and operates until 10:00 PM. It is closed every Thursday.
Genkotsu Hamburg is characterized by the performance where a staff member cuts the thick patty in half at your table and grills it further. You can choose between two sizes: 250g and 200g.
Sawayaka Hamburg's lunch hours are until 3:00 PM. If you order during lunch hours, soup and rice (or bread) are provided with your meal.
