Conveniently located just two stops from Shibuya Station, Sangenjaya makes for a perfect addition to your Shibuya itinerary. However, here’s a crucial tip: your Tokyo Metro Pass won't work here. Sangenjaya is on the Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line, a private railway, so you'll need to purchase a separate ticket or use a transit IC card like Suica or Pasmo.

While the alleyways themselves don't have a singular defining aesthetic, each establishment boasts its own unique character. And true to its reputation as a hotspot, it's always bustling with people. On the night I visited, the spot pictured above was incredibly popular; I tried to get a seat several times but had no luck!

The other main alley, located "below" Suzuran Street on the map, felt like it came alive a little later in the evening. Many establishments here open their doors later in the day.

Here, you'll find charming standing bars like these (many bars in this alley are tiny, so on warmer nights, it's common to see people enjoying their drinks right on the street).

You might even stumble upon places with a "master craftsman" vibe. However, since this isn't a tourist area, you'll often encounter menus exclusively in Japanese. Printed menus are manageable with translation apps, but handwritten ones can be a real challenge for Google Lens or Papago! This means you might need to rely on intuition to order. If the owner doesn't speak English, it could get a bit tricky, though knowing a few phrases like "Nani desu ka?" (What is this?) or pointing to "number one" popular items can be a lifesaver!
