La Sagrada Família
Unlike other grand European cathedrals,
La Sagrada Família in Barcelona was initiated
by the Association of Devotees of Saint Joseph, founded by
a bookseller named Bocabella and Father Rodríguez.
They commissioned the project to architect Francisco de Paula del Villar
on Saint Joseph's Day in March 1882.
However, Francisco de Paula del Villar
resigned just a year later due to creative differences
over the design details of the church,
and that's when Antoni Gaudí was officially appointed
as the lead architect.
At the time, Gaudí was still a relatively young architect,
but he poured his entire heart and soul into building La Sagrada Família
until his tragic, unexpected death
at the age of 74.
La Sagrada Família Gaudí Tour (Exterior)
I booked a half-day Gaudí tour in Barcelona,
and the grand finale of the tour was none other than La Sagrada Família.
We listened to the guide's explanation of the exterior during the tour,
and planned to explore the interior on our own afterward using tickets we pre-booked.
When I first laid eyes on the basilica, my jaw literally dropped.
Out of all the cathedrals I've seen in my life,
this was by far the most grand, majestic, and utterly overwhelming.
It's wild to think that it's still under construction!
Standing at an incredible height of 110 meters (around 360 feet),
it's almost impossible to fit the whole basilica into a single frame
if you're standing too close.

That's why everyone heads to the park right across the street
to capture the full beauty of the basilica in one shot.
If you stand right by the edge of the pond, you'll get a picture-perfect 10/10 composition.
But keep your wits about you! The moment you hesitate, other tourists will jump right into your spot,
so secure your photo quick!
Since our Gaudí tour only covered the exterior,
we walked all around the building
while listening to the guide's stories.
This particular section in the photo
is set to become the main entrance in the future.
The guide told us to snap a picture now so we can compare it
when we visit again in the future—so of course, I hurriedly clicked away!
The sculpted walls on the exterior are called facades,
and they are intricately carved with biblical stories
so that even those who couldn't read could understand the scriptures.
Each facade has a different meaning depending on its direction:
the East, where the sun rises, is the 'Nativity Facade';
the West, where the sun sets, is the 'Passion Facade';
and the South, bathed in the brightest light, is the 'Glory Facade'—
all beautifully illustrating the life of Jesus.

we grabbed some quick KFC chicken nearby to refuel!

I was so paranoid about pickpockets that I actually left my passport behind at my accommodation.
I was dynamic-sweating thinking, "What if they ask for my passport at the entrance?"
But luckily, I walked right in without any issues!
Inside the Sagrada Família
And finally... the moment I stepped inside the basilica!
As soon as I walked in, I was completely swept away by the breathtaking colors—
it's on a whole different level compared to any other cathedral I've ever seen.
Watching the mysterious, dancing light filter through the stained glass,
I was once again struck by Gaudí's sheer genius,
which I had been sensing throughout the entire tour.
If you just stand still and look up at the ceiling,
you truly feel like you've been transported into the middle of a massive forest.
The tops of the 36 pillars branch out like trees,
making the entire space feel like a peaceful woodland sanctuary.
Attached to these pillars are circular medallions featuring
depictions of an angel, a lion, an ox, and an eagle.
These beautiful details represent
the four Evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
This church is a place of prayer where God dwells.
The glorious light will brightly illuminate the colors inside,
and this church will be a wide-open space to see religion in its true light.

This was Gaudí's own vision for the basilica's purpose.
The main area gets incredibly crowded with people,
making it pretty tough to snap a clean photo.
So as you explore, keep your camera ready
and snap away the second you spot an open pocket of space!
Interestingly, the stained glass windows inside the Sagrada Família
do not depict any human figures.
They are expressed purely through color,
keeping the design highly abstract
rather than relying on traditional religious imagery.
The Stained Glass
One side of the basilica, bathed in warm reds and yellows,
symbolizes death and martyrdom.
Tucked away within the red stained glass,
you can actually spot the name "A KIM"—representing Andrew Kim Taegon,
Korea's very first Catholic priest.
Searching for it while looking around
made the visit even more fun and engaging!
Centered around cool tones of blue and green,
the opposite wall symbolizes hope and birth.
This stunning color gradient
truly leaves visitors in awe.
They say if you visit in the morning, the blue tones shine brighter,
while in the afternoon, the warm red tones are at their most beautiful.
The Gospel Gates
Among the prayers written in languages from all over the world,
you can actually find two written in Korean!
During our Gaudí tour, our guide
highly recommended that we try to find them
once we stepped inside.
And yes, we found them both!
Seeing the Korean script all the way over here
felt so welcoming and incredibly special.
Since the guide mentioned there were two,
I thought they would say different things,
but they actually turned out to be the exact same phrase.
Sagrada Familia Dress Code
I was quite worried about the dress code,
but since I visited in the winter, it wasn't really an issue at all.
That said, seeing other people walking around in strappy slip dresses,
it seems they aren't super strict,
and almost anything reasonable goes as long as it isn't wildly inappropriate.
The Museum
I heard climbing up the towers can be quite exhausting,
so I decided to skip that part.
Instead, we headed straight to the museum!
To get to the museum, once you step outside the basilica,
walk to the left with your back to the Passion Facade,
and you'll find the connecting passageway.
It showcases the rich history behind the construction of the Sagrada Familia,
along with various personal artifacts and designs belonging to Gaudí.
Just a heads-up: the audio guide you rent inside the basilica
doesn't cover this area,
so you have to return your device before heading inside.
Note that the photo above isn't the museum itself—don't let it confuse you!

Sagrada Familia Souvenirs (Gift Shop)
My younger brother is a huge architecture buff,
so I really wanted to pick up a Gaudí-themed souvenir for him.
That made a stop at the souvenir shop an absolute must!
And it definitely did not disappoint!
There was such a fantastic variety of beautiful merchandise.
Among them, we fell in love with the bookmarks
inspired by the gorgeous stained glass windows, so my sister, my brother, and I all got one.
We also found a flipbook illustrating
the step-by-step construction of the Sagrada Familia!
When you flip through the pages quickly, it plays like a mini-animation,
so I just had to take one home!
Before I knew it, my total ended up being €37.3,
so I made sure to get my tax refund before leaving.
Barcelona Gaudi Tour: Sagrada Família
It was so much more beautiful than I ever imagined—
the breathtaking Sagrada Família in Barcelona!
It was worth every single penny of the admission fee,
and I was left utterly in awe of Gaudi's pure genius.
I guess when natural talent is combined with lifetime dedication,
the result is nothing short of legendary.
I definitely want to come back once it's finally completed!
The area in front of the pond at Plaça de Gaudí, located right in front of the basilica, is an excellent spot to capture its full view. If you get too close to the basilica, it is difficult to fit the whole structure into the frame, so it is recommended to take photos from the park.
