Why Roppongi Hills? The reason was simple: we wanted to see Tokyo Tower in its most beautiful light.

1. How to Get to Roppongi Hills
Roppongi Hills can be a bit tricky to navigate for first-timers, so I'm including detailed directions:
Take the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line to Roppongi Station and exit through 1C.
Pass through the central circular plaza connected to the exit and enter Mori Tower directly.
Take the elevator to the 3rd floor, which is the observatory lobby.
2. Advantages of Roppongi Observatory Night View
The biggest advantage of Roppongi Hills is getting the closest view of Tokyo Tower. On a clear day, the view is incredibly crisp.
Unlike Shibuya Sky, you can enjoy the night view regardless of rain or strong winds, as it's an indoor observatory. Plus, you can comfortably sit by the windows and wait for the spectacular sunset.
Previously, there was an outdoor rooftop observatory called "Sky Deck," but its operational policy has changed, and it is now permanently closed. So, plan for an indoor experience!
3. Our Visit Experience & Discount Booking Tips
Honestly, at first, I really wanted to visit "Shibuya Sky," which is a super popular spot for Tokyo night views these days. However, tickets for sunset times were completely sold out. So, Roppongi Observatory became our second choice, but I must say, we were absolutely thrilled with our decision!
The observatory itself is a bit smaller than I expected. To snag one of the prime window seats, you'll want to arrive at least 30 minutes before sunset.
When I visited Tokyo, sunset was around 7:00 PM, so I arrived at the 52nd-floor observatory of Roppongi Tower around 6:30 PM.
The regular price for Roppongi Hills Observatory is 1,800 JPY. Currently, during a summer mega sale, you can purchase adult tickets for around ~$8.
By purchasing your tickets in advance, you can skip the queue at the ticket counter and enter directly.
The weather was a little cloudy, so my child's dream of seeing a "jet-black sky with a glowing red Tokyo Tower" didn't quite come true. Still, watching Tokyo Tower slowly transform into an orange glow through the panoramic windows was beautiful enough.
My child, who had been most excited about the night view on this Tokyo trip, was thoroughly satisfied.
Besides the observatory, Mori Tower also houses souvenir shops, cafes, and the Mori Art Museum. We had other plans, so we skipped them, but if you have extra time, they're definitely worth exploring!
4. Sakurazaka Street on a Summer Night
After leaving the observatory, we decided to visit Sakurazaka Street, located near Roppongi Hills. It’s famous for its cherry blossoms in spring and winter illuminations, so I was curious to see what it looked like on a summer night.
While there weren't any dazzling lights, the view of Tokyo Tower peeking through the lush green trees offered a more atmospheric and charming scene than a flashy one. Since it was summer, there weren't many people around, which was perfect for taking photos.
If you have the time, I highly recommend visiting Sakurazaka Street after enjoying the night view from Roppongi Observatory!
For a classic, romantic Tokyo night view centered around Tokyo Tower, Roppongi Hills truly delivers a unique experience. While I was a little disappointed about missing Shibuya Sky before entering, seeing the nightscape from here completely changed my mind.
If you prefer to enjoy Tokyo Tower's night view comfortably indoors, remember to arrive about 30 minutes before sunset. Roppongi Hills also has popular time slots that sell out quickly, so make sure to grab your tickets in advance at a discounted price!
