On my trip to Tokyo, I couldn't snag a reservation for Shibuya Sky on my preferred date,
so I booked the Roppongi Hills Observatory,
specifically the 52nd-floor Tokyo City View, instead.
I went up to the indoor observatory on the 52nd floor of Mori Tower
around 5 PM.
Beyond the massive glass windows, the entire city of Tokyo stretched out before me,
and it was even more beautiful than I expected. Best of all,
the view of Tokyo Tower was truly spectacular!

Even though it was cloudy and I missed the sunset,
it was still a perfectly satisfying spot for a view of Tokyo Tower.
So, I've put together my review of the visit, tips on the best reservation times,
and even the booking prices for Roppongi Hills Observatory!
Currently, you can book with a 1+1 limited-time special discount on KKday!

1. Roppongi Hills Observatory: My Alternative to Shibuya Sky

Just as observatories are a must-visit in any travel destination,
I knew I had to visit at least one in Tokyo.
Initially, I planned to visit Shibuya Sky,
but I couldn't secure a reservation for my desired date and time.
It's incredibly popular, seriously!
If you want to go to Tokyo Shibuya Sky,
be sure to book in advance!

As I already had Roppongi in my itinerary,
I decided to switch my plan to Roppongi Hills Observatory.
The official name for the Roppongi Hills Observatory is
Tokyo City View.
The 52nd floor of Roppongi Hills Mori Tower is
an indoor observatory located approximately 250m above sea level,
and its operating hours are from 10 AM to 10 PM.
The last admission time can vary depending on 'ongoing exhibitions, etc.',
so if you plan to visit late,
double-check when you make your reservation.
If you look up older reviews of Roppongi Hills,
you'll see many photos of the rooftop Sky Deck.
However, the Sky Deck ceased operations in 2024,
so currently, only the 52nd-floor indoor observatory is accessible!
Getting to the Roppongi Observatory was also quite easy.
It's directly connected to Roppongi Hills from Exit 1C of Roppongi Station on the Hibiya Line.
The observatory ticket counter is on the 3rd floor of Mori Tower.

Stepping out of the elevator, the first thing that struck me was
how surprisingly massive the windows were.
The panoramic glass stretched out, revealing the entire Tokyo cityscape,
and Tokyo Tower was clearly visible through it,
making it perfect for photos.
I had sought out this Tokyo observatory as an alternative
because I couldn't book Shibuya Sky, but once I was up there,
it was far better than I had imagined.
Best of all, since it's an indoor observatory,
you can enjoy the view comfortably even on cold or hot days,
making it a fantastic recommendation for things to do in Tokyo on a rainy day too!
Plus, it's connected to a shopping mall, so you can easily grab a meal or do some shopping
all in one go!

2. Visiting at 5 PM: Tokyo Tower View and Timing
I aimed to see both the sunset and the night view,
so I booked my admission for 5 PM.
However, the sky was quite cloudy that day,
so I couldn't capture the stunning sunset photos I had hoped for.
Still, the Tokyo Tower view itself was absolutely magnificent!
When you stand close to the window, Tokyo Tower and
the surrounding buildings fit perfectly into a single frame,
creating a scene that's quintessentially Tokyo, just by looking at the photos.

When I visited, an animation exhibition was underway inside the observatory.
The display monitors and installations were a nice addition,
which was a definite plus.
However, at the same time, it felt like it took up some of the observatory space,
which could be seen as a minor drawback.
But don't worry, it wasn't a major obstruction to enjoying the view!
Tokyo City View is a place that often hosts exhibitions and events
in its observation space, so the internal appearance and flow might change depending on the season.

In early September, even past 5:30 PM,
it still wasn't completely dark,
and we had to wait a bit longer to see the full night view.
Now that it's October and November, it probably gets dark much faster, right?
That day, we went to the Roppongi Hills Observatory right after arriving in Tokyo,
without having eaten a single meal, so we were really pushing ourselves.
Waiting was quite tough! Haha.
After our observatory visit, we immediately
headed to TsuruTonTan Roppongi branch
to grab a meal. ‘◡’

If I were to go again,
I'd first check the sunset time for my travel date,
go in about 30 minutes before the sun sets,
and schedule my visit to slowly enjoy the view until Tokyo Tower lights up.
(You can easily find Tokyo sunset times by searching on Google~)

Tokyo's sunset times vary quite a lot by season,
so if you're planning to see both the sunset and the night view,
it's a good idea to check the sunset time for that day
before making your reservation.
Since it's an indoor observatory, when taking night view photos,
the indoor lights might reflect off the glass.
So, remember to press your camera or phone close to the window
when you're shooting.
3. Roppongi Hills Observatory Reservation Prices: Where to Buy?

While you can purchase tickets for the Roppongi Hills Observatory
on-site,
I'd definitely recommend booking online in advance.
It's much more advantageous!
At the time I'm writing this blog post,
the adult admission fee was ¥2,400 on-site,
and ¥2,200 online.
But here's a tip:
Each travel platform sometimes offers special deals.
Right now, KKday even has a fantastic 1+1 discount going on!
What if the 1+1 promotion has ended
by the time you read my blog?
Trip.com is currently offering discounts for under ~$7,
so make sure to book the cheapest ticket you can find! ^^

For 2 people ~$8 | ★Limited-time Special Offer★ | |

Even if the price difference isn't huge,
the actual payment amount can vary
depending on any coupons you have or loyalty benefits.
And if it's a ticket that requires specific dates and times,
it's always a good idea to check the cancellation policy
before making your purchase.
If you're thinking, 'The price difference isn't that much after all~',
sticking with the platform you usually use for your bookings
is also a perfectly good option, I think.
😎

Honestly, Roppongi Hills Observation Deck
wasn't our first choice when planning this trip.
We couldn't snag tickets for Shibuya Sky on our preferred date,
so we opted for this instead – and ended up loving it even more!
Once we were up there, the panoramic Tokyo cityscape through the large glass windows,
and the stunning view of Tokyo Tower truly captivated us.
Especially if you have plans in Roppongi
or if booking Shibuya Sky is proving tricky,
Roppongi Hills Tokyo City View
is definitely worth considering as well.
If I get to visit again next time,
I'd love to time it more precisely with the sunset
and stay until Tokyo Tower lights up,
taking my time to soak it all in before heading down.
