Designated as a 'Special Place of Scenic Beauty,' Ritsurin Garden is far more expansive than its name suggests. To truly explore its entirety, you could easily spend over three hours wandering its paths.

With its lush green forests as a backdrop and picturesque ponds offering countless photo opportunities, Ritsurin Garden is a feast for the senses. Join me as I detail the entrance fees, recommended routes, and what makes this garden so special.

Ritsurin Garden Essentials

From my accommodation near Kataharamachi Station, it was about a 25-minute walk (roughly 1.2 miles) to the garden. Kawaramachi Station is similarly distanced. While you could take the train to Ritsurin Station, a leisurely 20-minute stroll often feels more rewarding, especially if you plan to visit the famous Uehara Honten udon restaurant for breakfast along the way, as I did!

The Ever-Changing Beauty of Ritsurin Garden

Ritsurin Garden is famous for the phrase 'Ippoh-Ikkei' (一歩一景), meaning 'one step, one view,' and it truly lives up to its reputation. At first, I thought, "It's just a park, how different can it be?" But boy, was I wrong! With every turn of the winding paths, a new vista unfolds: artificial mountains, meticulously sculpted pine trees, and expansive ponds reflecting it all. It's truly breathtaking.

Near the entrance, traditional Japanese houses serve as galleries and exhibition spaces, adding another layer of cultural immersion to your visit.

The true stars of this garden are undoubtedly the pine trees. Out of approximately 1,400 pine trees, about 1,000 have been meticulously pruned and shaped over centuries by dedicated gardeners, resembling giant bonsai. Witnessing these bizarrely beautiful and intricate curves, you can't help but marvel at the sheer dedication of human craftsmanship. It's an experience that makes you lose track of time.

These pines alone are a testament to why Japanese gardens are so renowned worldwide.

Recommended Path: Focus on the South Garden

Given the garden's immense size, exploring every corner might be challenging for some due to time or energy constraints. My recommendation is to focus on the South Garden, where most of Ritsurin Garden's true 'highlights' are concentrated.

Kikugetsu-tei (掬月亭)
This charming teahouse, romantically named 'Moon Scooping Pavilion,' offers an unparalleled experience. Remove your shoes, settle onto the tatami mats, and sip on a cup of matcha while gazing out at the tranquil pond. You'll feel like an immortal sage with not a care in the world.

Engetsu-kyo (偃月橋)

This is the beautiful crescent-moon-shaped bridge. It's a fantastic spot for photos, but since it's a popular thoroughfare, I recommend capturing it as a backdrop rather than trying to get a shot directly on the bridge itself.

After crossing the bridge, you'll find a snack shop. Be sure to try their ice cream – it's a refreshing treat! The pond here is also home to an abundance of large koi fish, likely due to visitors feeding them.

Hiraiho (飛来峰)

This spot is truly crucial! Climb this small hill, and you'll be rewarded with a panoramic view of the entire garden. The iconic photos you often see when searching for Ritsurin Garden? They were almost certainly taken right here.

Experience a Traditional Wasen (Japanese Boat Ride)

At Ritsurin Garden, you have the option to take a 'Wasen,' a traditional Japanese boat. A boatman will row you around the pond, offering a completely different perspective of the garden than what you experience on foot. While I personally opted not to take the ride – the sun was quite strong, and I preferred to explore on foot – it's a wonderful option if you have ample time.

The boat ride costs ~$6. If you plan to purchase tickets on-site, I recommend heading straight to the pier immediately after entering. Boats operate on a schedule, and popular times can sell out, potentially leaving you waiting for an hour or more.

Final Thoughts on Ritsurin Garden

Walking leisurely and stopping for photos, a couple of hours flew by. Though an artificially created garden, the seamless blend with nature left a profound impression on me.

If you find yourself in Takamatsu, I wholeheartedly recommend indulging in this peaceful green luxury. Staying at a nearby hotel would even allow for daily morning strolls through its serene paths. It was a rare moment of unhurried tranquility during my travels.

Ritsurin Garden changes its attire with each season, but the verdant beauty of its pine trees, especially in the quiet stillness of an early morning, possesses a unique power to calm the soul.

While bustling tourist attractions have their charm, sometimes, a walk through a meticulously maintained garden, sharing quiet conversations, feels like a profound recharge.
