If you come to Takamatsu, this is absolutely your first stop!
As I planned my trip to Takamatsu, I searched for all sorts of things.
And one place kept popping up everywhere I looked.
That place is none other than Ritsurin Garden.
It's consistently ranked as one of Japan's most beautiful gardens, and after visiting myself, I can confirm that's no exaggeration at all.
I visited in early March, and on a clear day, the sunlight reflecting off the lake with the pine trees was truly like a Windows desktop background come to life.

🕐 Opening Hours & Admission Fee — Make sure to check before you go!
Opening hours vary by season. They operate flexibly, adjusting to sunrise times, so it's a good idea to check them before your visit.
When I visited in March, the hours were from 6:30 AM to 6:00 PM. It's the perfect time for an early morning stroll! Please keep that in mind.

The admission fee is ~$3 for adults and ~$1 for children (elementary and middle school students).
While there's a ticket counter, you'll also find three kiosks next to it where you can quickly purchase tickets using card or cash.
It was super convenient to grab tickets instantly without waiting in line or feeling rushed.
Cards like Travel Wallet are also accepted, so keep that in mind!

⛵ Rowboat (Wasen) — You absolutely must book this first!
Let me tell you about the one thing I regretted most at Ritsurin Garden.
It was not experiencing the rowboat (Wasen) ride.
These rowboats drift peacefully across the lake, making it an essential experience if you want to truly enjoy the garden.
However, I leisurely thought, "I'll walk around a bit, then take the boat~" and ended up missing out because the timings didn't work.

The boat only holds a maximum of 6 people. Popular time slots sell out in an instant.
So, here's my heartfelt advice:
As soon as you enter the garden, save the sightseeing for later and head straight to the rowboat ticket counter to book your spot first.
It's much more efficient to secure your preferred time slot and then explore the garden with the remaining time.
The fee is ~$5 for adults and ~$3 for children, and it must be purchased separately from the admission ticket. Please keep that in mind!

🐟 Koi Feeding Experience — It's ~$1 of pure healing!
As you walk through the park, you'll spot red gacha machines (vending machines).
Pop in 100 yen and turn the knob, and a capsule of koi food comes out. Sprinkle it into the lake, and watch as huge koi, some as big as your forearm, swarm all at once! It’s actually quite a delightful and subtly fun experience.
It’s an experience I think kids would particularly adore. Just a small, affordable moment of pure joy for 100 yen, but it unexpectedly becomes a truly memorable highlight of your visit.

☕ Kikukakutei — A Traditional Teahouse in the Park
After a grand tour of the park, your legs might start to feel the joyful strain.
That's exactly when Kikukakutei (掬月亭) becomes the perfect sanctuary.
It's a traditional teahouse nestled within Ritsurin Garden, but it’s far from a simple cafe. Here, you get to enjoy tea in a tatami room where the garden view unfolds like a breathtaking panorama.
The moment you slip off your shoes and step inside, you're greeted by a truly overwhelming vista – the lake and ancient pine trees perfectly framed, like a living masterpiece. It's an absolutely sublime experience.

For refreshments, you can choose between a vibrant matcha (800 yen) or a refreshing sencha (600 yen).
Both options are served with a delightful traditional Japanese sweet. That distinct, subtly bitter aroma of matcha felt even more profoundly refreshing after exploring the park's serene paths.
Good news for modern explorers: they support a variety of payment methods including Travel Wallet, Alipay, and Apple Pay, so you don't need to worry about carrying cash. Just a heads-up!

🌤️ Weather Tip — Bring a Light Outer Layer
Let me share a quick weather tip based on my visit in early March.
On clear, sunny days, the garden truly transforms into a picturesque masterpiece.
But remember, it’s an expansive open area around the lake, so a breeze can make it feel a little cool.
I highly recommend packing a light outer layer. As weather can vary by season, it’s always a good idea to double-check a reliable weather app before your visit. Stay comfortable and enjoy!

Final Thoughts
Ritsurin Garden truly solidifies its reputation as an unmissable gem when visiting Takamatsu. On a clear day, the breathtaking scenery of pine trees mirrored in the lake is so exquisitely beautiful, photos simply can't do it justice. And the unique experience of savoring a cup of matcha in Kikukakutei's tatami room, an indulgence exclusive to Ritsurin Garden, was absolutely delightful.
My only regret? Not getting to experience the traditional rowboat ride! Seriously, my absolute top tip is to book the rowboat as soon as you enter the park. This is crucial! Just remembering that one piece of advice will make your Ritsurin Garden visit far more enriching than mine. If Takamatsu is on your travel radar, Ritsurin Garden is an absolute must-see!
