Let me introduce you to this fantastic spot!

It's conveniently situated right in front of the Sakuramachi Terminal, making getting around a breeze,

and it boasts impressive public bath facilities!

This is a review of our stay at Ref Kumamoto by Vessel, which was one of the most satisfying accommodations during our Fukuoka-Kumamoto trip with my husband.

Given how much walking is typically involved in Japanese travel, having access to a large public bath was a huge relief.

I'll share an honest breakdown of the pros and cons based on our personal experience.

Location & Convenience: Travel Light, Explore More

Being directly across from the Sakuramachi Bus Terminal is undoubtedly this hotel's biggest advantage.

You can easily walk to Kumamoto Castle or Sakuranobaba Johsaien, which made planning our sightseeing itinerary incredibly convenient.

Upon entering the lobby of Ref Kumamoto, we were greeted by Kumamon, Kumamoto's beloved mascot. While you see Kumamon everywhere in the city, it was a pleasant surprise to see him at the hotel too!

When we visited, there was an event where guests could receive a gift for subscribing to their mailing list.

We chose an Asahi draft beer, which was a small but fun bonus to our stay.

The hotel also offers a well-organized luggage storage area, which is perfect for dropping off your bags right after arriving in Kumamoto and starting your exploration unencumbered. Great location and thoughtful service – a win-win!

Disposable amenities like toothbrushes and cotton pads were available in the lobby for guests to pick up as needed.

Additionally, there was a cozy corner with complimentary coffee and beverages, and even a manga library for some light reading.

Room Review: Compact but Well-Equipped Single Room

We opted for a single room. Despite the name, it featured one double bed, making it suitable for two people.

The room size was on the smaller side, but it was exceptionally clean and well-maintained.

I particularly remember the unique layout where the washbasin was separate, located in the hallway, with amenities neatly hung on the wall.

The shower and toilet areas, though compact, were clean and highly functional. The shower pressure was strong, and the water heated up quickly, which was a huge plus.

It was convenient to control all the room lights from a single panel near the bed. We also enjoyed the view of Sakuramachi Terminal right outside our window.

That day, there happened to be a ramen festival at Sakuramachi Terminal, so it was bustling with people! What a lively sight!

The Public Bath: Your Key to Relaxation

Even if you're driving a rental car in Japan, you're likely to walk over 4 miles a day.

That's why ending the day with a warm soak in the public bath was incredibly precious. Here are the specific features we noted during our use.

The indoor bath at Ref Kumamoto was surprisingly spacious, allowing for a comfortable and unhurried experience.

Many Japanese public baths don't feature a cold plunge pool, but this one did! It was perfect for alternating between hot and cold to relieve fatigue.

In addition to the indoor bath, there was also an open-air bath.

However, since the hotel is located in the city center, the open-air bath's roof is quite enclosed, likely for privacy and structural reasons.

So, if you're expecting a wide-open, expansive view, you might find it a little disappointing.

I used the public bath twice: once late at night and once in the morning.

In the morning, perhaps because it had just been cleaned, there was a faint scent of chlorine. While individual experiences may vary depending on the time of day, the overall cleanliness was well-maintained.

After a relaxing soak, you can enjoy complimentary ice cream, which, though a small touch, added a surprising amount of satisfaction to the experience.

Tips & Overall Verdict

We visited during peak season and paid around ~$138 per night. However, depending on the season, you can often find rooms for around ~$69 or less these days.

For that price, with such a fantastic location and excellent facilities, I believe it's an incredibly attractive and value-packed option.
