Planning a trip to Kumamoto and wondering where to base yourself?

Since exploring Kumamoto usually involves miles of walking, booking a hotel with a traditional Japanese public bath (daiyokujo) is a total game-changer.

Today, I'm sharing my review of REF Kumamoto by Vessel Hotels—a fantastic budget-friendly stay that boasts an unbeatable location, spotless rooms, and a massive public bath to soak your tired muscles after a long day of sightseeing!

From the moment you arrive, REF Kumamoto by Vessel Hotels feels incredibly fresh and modern. While it's part of a nationwide chain, this specific property stands out for its pristine condition and boutique-like atmosphere.

I loved the generous check-in and check-out times, but the absolute highlight is the public bath facility. Soaking in the hot water every morning and night melted away my travel fatigue, leaving me fully recharged for the next day's adventures.

As I mentioned, the location is an absolute dream for travelers.

As you can see in the photo above, it's just steps away from the Sakuramachi Bus Terminal. Situated right at the entrance of the main shopping arcade, you'll have endless dining and entertainment options day and night.

📌 Best of all, the rates are highly affordable! Expect to pay around ~$77 per night on weekdays, and between ~$115 to ~$130 on weekends. For the quality and location, it's an absolute steal.

Let's dive into the details of my stay!

First off, luggage storage is a breeze. They have a secure locker and locking cable system, which gave me total peace of mind while I went out to explore before check-in.

Interestingly, they also sell bento boxes and side dishes right in the lobby.

They call it the "Mottainai Bento" (No-Waste Bento), which is creatively made from leftover breakfast buffet items. At just ~350 JPY (about $2.50), it's a fantastic, eco-friendly option for a quick and cheap bite.

To the left of the check-in counter, you'll find a manga library and a complimentary amenity bar.

It's incredibly convenient being able to grab exactly what you need—like combs, cotton swabs, and razors—before heading up to your room.

There's also a breakfast area that doubles as a guest lounge.

📍 From 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM, it's reserved for breakfast guests, but outside those hours, anyone can use the space freely.

Even better, they offer a complimentary welcome drink service from 2:00 PM to 11:00 PM!

You can grab tea, juice, and coffee as much as you like. I stuck mainly to the coffee, and it was surprisingly much better than what you'd get at a local convenience store.

As someone who drinks coffee like water, this perk was a massive win for me!

After checking in, I headed up to my room.

For guests staying multiple nights who prefer to skip daily housekeeping, the staff thoughtfully hangs fresh towels on your door handle—a great eco-friendly touch.

Here is the entrance to my Single Room.

Despite the name, it actually features a double bed, making it plenty spacious for two people to share comfortably.

Keep in mind that the room size is about ~150 sq ft (14m²). It's compact, which is standard for Japanese business hotels, but very well-designed.

The layout features a toilet room on the left of the entrance and an open sink on the right. Further in, you'll find the bed and a small table. The space utilization is brilliant.

The bed was so plush and comfortable that I fell asleep the second my head hit the pillow!

Right above the bed, the window offered a cool city view. I could even see the historic tram lines, which added a charming, local Kumamoto vibe to the stay.

I hadn't booked this hotel for the views, so this was a wonderful surprise that really elevated my experience.

The room came equipped with all the essentials: fabric deodorizer, hangers, and comfortable slippers.

Everything felt brand new and meticulously clean, making it a joy to use.

Finally, the bathroom setup separated the toilet from the shower stall. There is no bathtub in the room itself.

Since the hotel has a fantastic public bath downstairs, the lack of an in-room tub wasn't an issue at all. In fact, removing the tub allowed for a much more practical and spacious layout in the rest of the room.

I stayed at three different hotels during my time in Kumamoto, and REF by Vessel Hotels was undoubtedly the best in terms of price, location, and service.

Built in 2019, it still retains that pristine, newly-opened feel which made the stay incredibly pleasant.

Though I couldn't take photos inside, the public bath was the ultimate luxury—there is nothing quite like a hot soak after a long day of travel.

Whether you're traveling with family, on a solo adventure, or just looking for a spotless, well-located base, I can't recommend this hotel enough.
