If you're planning an independent trip to Hitakatsu, Tsushima, there's a charming little bakery you absolutely have to visit.
It's become a hot spot on social media, and today, I'm excited to introduce you to Poemu Bakery!

📍 Poemu Bakery is conveniently located just a 7-minute walk from Hitakatsu Port and opens bright and early at 8:00 AM, making it the perfect first stop right after you arrive in Tsushima.
This charming little bakery is gaining buzz on social media as a unique spot run solely by a lovely Japanese grandmother, offering a glimpse into authentic, artisanal craftsmanship. Many of the popular items sell out quickly, so I made sure to head straight there as soon as I landed in Hitakatsu.
The bakery interior felt like a cherished old establishment, with a nostalgic charm. There weren't any tables for dining in, so it's strictly a takeaway spot. They also had some ice cream for sale, and beautiful landscape photos adorned the walls.
You'll find bread trays and tongs near the counter, so just pick your favorites and head to the register. As the rumors suggested, the charming grandmother owner was indeed running the shop all by herself.
My main mission for visiting was to snag their famous Yakisoba Bread. However, since it's their most popular item, it was already completely sold out by around 10:00 AM. Only sandwiches and hamburgers were left from the fresh-baked selection.
A little tip: you can grab the trimmed crusts of their fresh bread for free from a basket at the bottom of the display!
The sandwiches were around ~$2, and the hamburgers were around ~$2, which felt a bit pricey for a local bakery.
However, there were still plenty of other bread varieties available. While the selection wasn't huge, with about 15-20 types, the prices were generally affordable, mostly around ~$1.

There were so many tempting and delicious-looking breads, I wanted to buy a bunch! But since I was planning to have lunch soon, I decided to pick up just a couple of lighter options.
I had a hard time choosing, so I asked the owner for her recommendations, and she suggested two or three items. After paying, she packed them neatly in a small paper bag.
I ended up buying the traditional flavored bread and a hamburger. I tried them later that evening back at my accommodation. The flavored bread was delightfully sweet, topped with a teriyaki-like sauce and sugar. It was a unique flavor I hadn't experienced before. The hamburger, on the other hand, was pretty standard, reminiscent of an old-fashioned diner burger.
Overall, I wouldn't say the bread was a gourmet masterpiece, but rather a comforting, homely taste. I think most visitors come here not just for the taste, but to experience the charming, rustic vibe of a country grandmother's bakery.
In fact, Poemu Bakery is the only bakery in Hitakatsu! So, if you're craving some freshly baked goods or simply want to soak in the everyday life of a local Japanese town, this spot is definitely worth a visit!
