During my travels through Phetchaburi, Thailand,

the most astonishing and unique experience I encountered

was undoubtedly the 'Monkey Island Boat Tour'

on Kaeng Krachan Lake.

Initially, I imagined it would be a simple boat ride,

observing monkeys from a distance.

However, to my absolute surprise, the monkeys would directly leap into the lake,

swim towards our boat, and eagerly snatch food right before our eyes.

It was far more thrilling and distinctive than I could have ever anticipated.

How to Book Your Boat Tour at the Restaurant

Kaeng Krachan Lake in Phetchaburi is dotted with several small islands.

These islands are home to wild monkeys,

and the boat tour takes you close enough to feed them.

Initially, I inquired with a rubber boat tour operator the day before,

but they advised that booking directly at Kasirat Restaurant

would be more economical.

Since it was lunchtime, we decided to eat at the restaurant first.

The restaurant isn't a fancy establishment,

but the prices were very reasonable.

Personally, I found their fish dishes more satisfying than the Tom Yum Goong.

After our meal, I mentioned to the owner that we wanted to do the Monkey Island boat tour,

and they promptly helped us with the booking.

The cost was 600 Thai Baht.

At first, I thought it was a per-person price, but it turned out to be

the price for the entire boat.

There were three adults in our group,

and judging by the boat's size, it could comfortably fit 5-6 people.

Luckily, we were the only tourists on board,

allowing us to enjoy a private tour.

After booking, we waited about 15 minutes,

and then the boat arrived at the pier right in front of the restaurant.

Why You Should Buy a Large Bunch of Bananas (100 Thai Baht)

While waiting for the boat, the restaurant owner

showed us a large bunch of bananas and encouraged us to take it.

The price was 100 Thai Baht.

We politely declined, thinking we'd be fine without it, but we later regretted that decision.

As we glided across the wide, refreshing lake and approached the first island,

the boat driver pulled out small bags of crackers to sell for 100 Thai Baht each.

While I thought the price was a bit steep for the quantity of crackers,

seeing the monkeys staring intently at us,

I eventually opened my wallet.

But the boat didn't just circle one island.

We visited a total of 4-5 islands,

and at each one, groups of monkeys were eagerly awaiting our arrival.

Ultimately, we kept buying more crackers,

handing out about five bags in total.

It was then that I understood why the restaurant owner

had urged us to buy the large bunch of bananas.

If I ever return with family,

I'll make sure to bring a much larger supply of bananas or other fruits.

Personally, I think you'd need at least 4 bunches to feed them without feeling like you ran out too soon.

Monkeys That Can Swim!

As soon as we tossed the crackers onto the water,

the monkeys, without a moment's hesitation,

splashed into the lake! They swiftly swam to grab the treats.

Honestly, they were much better swimmers than I am!

Witnessing wild monkeys freely dog-paddling through the water

was a first for me, and it was both fascinating and incredibly entertaining.

Towards the end of the tour,

one monkey even boldly jumped onto our boat!

It seemed to be checking if there was any more food left.

Is It Safe?

I'm generally a bit wary of animals,

so when the monkeys first approached, I felt a little nervous.

However, I didn't witness any aggressive behavior.

As mentioned, one monkey climbed onto the boat towards the end of the tour,

likely to scout for more snacks.

But after a quick look around and confirming there was nothing else,

it hopped right back off.

Our boat driver didn't seem fazed at all.

The monkeys seemed more interested in the food than in attacking people.

That said, it's always a good idea to be cautious with your phone and bag.

Even without monkeys, there's a risk of dropping your phone into the lake

while trying to capture photos from the boat.

(Definitely bring a smartphone strap!)

Is It Suitable for Kids?

Life jackets are provided, so it seemed perfectly suitable for families with children.

The boat speed isn't fast, and the driver is constantly at the helm,

so it wasn't a dangerous experience.

However, since the monkeys do get quite close,

if you have young children,

it would be best for parents to feed them alongside their kids.

A Unique 40-Minute Adventure in Phetchaburi

The tour lasts approximately 40 minutes.

It's a perfect amount of time—neither too long nor too short.

What made it truly special was the opportunity to see wild monkeys up close,

feed them, and even watch them swim.

While Phetchaburi might not have a huge array of famous tourist attractions,

this single experience alone makes it well worth the visit.

Especially if you're traveling with family or friends,

this tour promises to be a highly satisfying highlight.
