Today, I'm excited to share my honest review of Pan Maison's Asakusa branch, a spot renowned for its delicious salt bread. I stopped by on a bustling weekend afternoon around 3 PM in early 2026, and here's what I found!

Finding Pan Maison Asakusa

While Pan Maison has several popular locations, the Asakusa branch I visited is actually situated a little off the main tourist drag of Asakusa. I specifically chose this location because I heard it generally has shorter wait times, especially on a busy weekend afternoon.

8:30 AM to 7:00 PM

Many visitors tend to flock to the Ginza branch, but for me, Asakusa was more convenient. I can't speak to any taste differences between the branches, as I haven't tried the Ginza location (which might be the main store, who knows!). Still, I was relieved to find a chain store available; I was quite worried about long queues!

My Weekend Visit Experience

I arrived at Pan Maison on a Sunday afternoon, around 3 PM. To my surprise, most of the customers waiting were locals, with only a handful of tourists. There were about 3-4 groups ahead of me, and I only waited for about 5 minutes.

Thankfully, they were continuously baking fresh batches of salt bread, so I didn't have to worry about missing out or enduring a long wait for my desired treats.

When it was my turn, I simply told the staff which types of bread I wanted, and they promptly packed them for me. Payment is self-service at a kiosk, where you can use either card or cash. It's a pretty efficient system – they take the next customer's order while you're paying. Smart!

I picked up two regular salt breads and one truffle salt bread.

Regular Salt Bread: 120 JPY (~$1)

Truffle Salt Bread: 190 JPY (~$1)

Even buying three loaves, my total came out to only ~$4. Back home, a single salt bread can easily set you back ~$2 or more, so this was a steal!

It’s definitely a great price for salt bread, and honestly, I think this price feels just right.

My Honest Review of Pan Maison Salt Bread

Since the wait was short and fresh batches were constantly coming out, I was lucky enough to try the salt bread right out of the oven. With all the hype surrounding Pan Maison as a top Tokyo salt bread spot, my expectations were pretty high!

However, I have to say, the taste of Pan Maison's salt bread was a bit different from what I expected. It had the familiar salt bread flavor, but it was noticeably less sweet and less crispy than many I've tried. I'd describe it as a "healthier" take on salt bread. Perhaps the main branch has a different profile?

Between the truffle and regular salt bread, I honestly didn't notice a huge difference in flavor. If you're looking to try it, I'd suggest sticking with the regular one. Maybe their An Butter (red bean paste butter) bread would be a better choice?

To be frank, I personally prefer the salt bread I've had in other places (even in Korea!). While it's certainly worth trying once for the experience, I wouldn't call it an absolute must-visit. But hey, taste is subjective, so take my opinion with a grain of salt (pun intended!). And just so you know, I really love salt bread, so my standards are high!

As a final note, I visited Pan Maison on my last day in Tokyo, so I packed some salt bread to bring home in my carry-on. Good news – Pan Maison's bread is perfectly fine for airline carry-on!

It actually tasted even better after it cooled down, so I highly recommend bringing some home with you if you enjoy it!
