Palbok Sundae Sejong Review 2026: Gukbap & Spicy Kalguksu
Palbok Sundae Sejong: Authentic gukbap and spicy tripe kalguksu. Our review covers menu, two visits, and compares it to Chungnam Sundae. Plan your visit!

Back in June 2026, while preparing to move to Sejong, I was on the hunt for great local eateries in Geumnam-myeon. That's how I first stumbled upon Palbok Sundae Sejong Branch.
On my very first day in Sejong, I visited Chungnam Sundae, a well-known spot in Geumnam-myeon. But the next day, curious about other gukbap restaurants, I decided to give Palbok Sundae a try.

The gukbap (Korean rice soup) I had that day was so clean and delicious that I found myself returning after I officially moved to Sejong. During this recent revisit, I even tried their Eolkeuni Gopchang Kalguksu (Spicy Tripe Kalguksu), a dish famously featured on the "Ttoganjip" Nonsan episode on YouTube!
Join me as I share my experiences from both visits to Palbok Sundae, along with a comparison to Chungnam Sundae!

Dining in Sejong's Geumnam-myeon: What About Parking?

The Yongpo-ri area in Geumnam-myeon, Sejong, is a hub for restaurants, which often means parking can be a bit of a challenge.
However, Palbok Sundae in Sejong is an exception! They offer convenient underground parking and a spacious lot right in front of the restaurant. This made visiting by car incredibly easy and stress-free.
My First Visit: Palbok Modum Gukbap Review

A Warm Welcome with Complimentary Sides
After placing our order on the tablet, the first things to arrive were the basic side dishes, accompanied by a delightful surprise: complimentary pig lung and liver!

I'm particularly fond of pig lung, so this unexpected treat really won me over. It's a fantastic touch that sets Palbok Sundae apart!

A Clean and Odor-Free Broth
The Palbok Modum Gukbap impressed me from the very first spoonful with its incredibly clean and clear broth. Despite being generously packed with tripe and various other offals, there was virtually no gamey odor, which can sometimes be a concern with these types of dishes. The tripe itself was tender and soft, not chewy at all.

The initial seasoning is quite mild, so I recommend tasting it as is before adjusting to your preference. I, like a true gukbap connoisseur, added a little salted shrimp (saeujeot) to adjust the flavor. This addition surprisingly reminded me of Busan's famous pork gukbap, though Palbok Sundae's style is distinctively its own.

The Spicy Eolkeuni Palbok Modum Gukbap
My husband ordered the Eolkeuni Gukbap, which is their spicy version. Instead of hitting you with intense heat right away, this dish has a unique characteristic: the spiciness gradually builds with each spoonful.
He started eating enthusiastically, unaware of the accumulating heat, but by the end, he was definitely feeling the burn! It's a great option for those who enjoy a slow-building spice.
Second Visit: Eolkeuni Gopchang Kalguksu Review

After my first visit, I happened to catch an episode of the popular Korean YouTube show "Ttoganjip" (meaning "Visited Again") that featured Palbok Sundae in its Nonsan edition. Seeing their Gopchang Kalguksu (Tripe Kalguksu) highlighted on the show confirmed it was the same restaurant!
I had actually been curious about the Gopchang Kalguksu during my first visit because so many people were ordering it. So, I recently went back to try it for myself!

Rich Broth with Earthy Perilla Seed Flavor
The Eolkeuni Gopchang Kalguksu boasts a deeply flavorful broth, generously enriched with perilla seed powder (deulkkae-garu) and fresh chives. The perilla seed powder gives it a robust, earthy taste that, for me, brought to mind gamjatang (spicy pork bone soup). It offered a distinctly different charm compared to the gukbap I had previously.

Unique Texture from Handmade Noodles
The kalguksu noodles here seemed handmade, with varying lengths and thicknesses. Unlike the long, smooth strands of typical kalguksu, these had a rustic, slightly uneven texture that surprisingly paired wonderfully with the rich broth.
However, because the noodles were so irregular in length, sometimes it was easier to scoop them up with a spoon, along with the broth, rather than trying to wrangle them with chopsticks!

Always Cut Your Sundae!
The sundae (Korean blood sausage) tucked into the Gopchang Kalguksu was quite large. It was too hot and substantial to eat in one bite, so I highly recommend cutting it into smaller pieces. I even found myself nibbling at the filling first. Haha!
Just like the gukbap, the Eolkeuni Gopchang Kalguksu also features that accumulating spiciness, building gradually after the initial savory notes of the perilla seeds. It's definitely a fantastic choice for anyone who loves a good, hearty spicy dish.
Palbok Sundae vs. Chungnam Sundae: A Flavor Showdown

First, Chungnam Sundae, then Palbok Sundae the very next day – this close timing allowed me to naturally compare the two restaurants.

Personally, both establishments served offal that was completely free of any gamey smell, and both the tripe and other internals were tender and delicious.
However, their broths had distinctly different flavor profiles.

To me, Chungnam Sundae's key ingredients were its green onion seasoning (pa-dadaegi) and perilla seed powder.
Adding these to the broth enhanced it with a subtle sweetness from the green onions, creating a rich and savory depth of flavor.

In contrast, Palbok Sundae's broth had very little of that sweetness. Instead, it offered a much cleaner and more refreshing flavor profile.
I personally prefer a clean broth over a subtly sweet one, so Palbok Sundae was more to my taste.
Rather than saying one is definitively "better" than the other, I'd suggest choosing based on what kind of broth you're craving that day.
For a subtly sweet and rich broth 👉 Chungnam Sundae
For a clean, refreshing, yet deep broth 👉 Palbok Sundae
Plus, Palbok Sundae offers those wonderful complimentary pig lung and liver side dishes, and their Eolkeuni Gopchang Kalguksu is a truly unique offering. These distinctive features provide plenty of reasons to revisit!
📍 Palbok Sundae Sejong Branch
112, 113, 115 Yongpo-ro, Geumnam-myeon, Sejong-si, South Korea
If you're searching for a gukbap restaurant in Sejong's Geumnam-myeon, Palbok Sundae is an incredibly satisfying choice.
Parking is convenient,
the offal has virtually no gamey odor,
and those complimentary pig lung and liver side dishes are a fantastic bonus.
The Eolkeuni Gopchang Kalguksu, in particular, offers a distinct charm different from their gukbap, and I'll definitely be returning for it often. For anyone looking for a great restaurant in Sejong's Geumnam-myeon, Palbok Sundae is well worth a visit, offering both clean sundae gukbap and a unique spicy tripe kalguksu.

You can park in the large open lot right in front of the store, and there is also an underground parking garage. It is quite convenient to visit by car, even in the Yongpo-ri area of Geumnam-myeon, Sejong, where parking is usually difficult due to the cluster of restaurants.
What complimentary side dishes are provided at the Palbok Sundae Sejong branch?
After ordering via the tablet, complimentary pork lungs and liver are served along with the basic side dishes. You can enjoy them before your main dishes, such as gukbap (soup with rice) or kalguksu (noodle soup), are served.
What are the characteristics of the noodles in the spicy gopchang kalguksu featured on the YouTube channel 'Ttoganjip'?
They use handmade noodles, so their length and thickness are irregular, giving them a slightly rustic texture. Since the noodles vary in length, it might be easier to eat them with a spoon along with the broth.
