Osaka to Kyoto Day Trip 2026: Best Bus Tour Itinerary

If you're planning a trip to Osaka for three days or more, a visit to Kyoto will naturally be on your mind. Personally, I found Kyoto even more captivating than Osaka!

While Osaka buzzes with a modern, urban vibe (and yes, it's popular with tourists from everywhere), Kyoto's architecture and attractions felt distinctly more 'Japanese,' offering a truly authentic cultural immersion.

If you're not planning an overnight stay in Kyoto and are instead aiming for a day trip, I wholeheartedly recommend a bus tour.

While Kyoto boasts an abundance of incredible sights, its public transportation system isn't always the most straightforward for navigating between them efficiently. Trying to hit all the major spots in a single day using only public transport can be quite challenging.

This is especially true if you're traveling with parents or older companions – a bus tour becomes an absolute must for a comfortable and stress-free experience!

Day Trip Itinerary

Here's the bus tour itinerary I experienced. The departure point was conveniently located at Osaka's Nipponbashi Station, Exit 2, right near Dotonbori, making it super easy to find.

Arashiyama

Our first stop was the Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama. Visiting in the morning meant the crowds weren't overwhelming, and the clear blue sky against the lush green mountains created a truly picturesque scene.

Next, we moved on to Tenryu-ji Temple. The traditional tatami rooms and large paintings offered an authentic glimpse into the unique ambiance of a Japanese temple.

Some visitors might choose to skip this, but I highly recommend making a quick stop at Tenryu-ji, especially to admire its exquisitely beautiful garden.

Then, it was off to the famous Bamboo Grove! It was incredibly crowded, so I didn't take many photos, but just walking through it felt wonderfully cool and serene.

During our free time, I grabbed a delicious strawberry mochi – chewy and absolutely delightful! Japan truly is a paradise for desserts.

Kinkaku-ji

After enjoying lunch in Arashiyama, our second destination was Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion.

The golden structure, set against its tranquil pond, shimmered brilliantly in the sunlight – it was absolutely stunning.

Our stay here was relatively short, about 50 minutes, so it's best to snap your photos quickly and explore the walking path efficiently.

Fushimi Inari Shrine

Our third stop was Fushimi Inari Shrine, one of Kyoto's most iconic photo spots.

The vibrant red torii gates at the shrine's entrance were quite impressive, truly embodying the mysterious and dreamy atmosphere I'd seen in anime.

With over an hour and 10 minutes allotted here, you'll have plenty of time to capture some fantastic pictures!

They also sell charming fox-shaped charms and souvenirs, so it's worth taking a look if you're interested.

Kiyomizu-dera

Our final stop was Kiyomizu-dera Temple. After getting our admission tickets, we entered to find expansive grounds and breathtaking views. Perched on a hillside, the scenery was particularly stunning as the sun began to set.

The temple grounds are truly vast. Make sure to collect some of the flowing water inside and make a wish – it's believed to bring good health.

By the time we finished exploring Kiyomizu-dera, evening had arrived, and the path down was growing dim.

With plenty of tour time still available, you might want to browse the souvenir shops in the surrounding alleys or grab a coffee at one of the charming cafes.
