Oktoberfest Munich Guide 2026: Dates, Tents, & Tips
Get ready for the world's biggest beer festival! Here is everything you need to know about Munich's Oktoberfest, from 2026 dates to tent seating hacks.
Oktoberfest, Germany's legendary beer festival and one of the world's top three festivals!
It was at the very top of my bucket list, so I finally made it happen during my trip to Munich last year.
While I knew it was the ultimate beer festival,
I was pretty clueless about where to go or how to snag a seat.
Thankfully, a close friend living in Munich shared tons of insider tips,
which helped me have the absolute best time!
Here is my ultimate guide to the Oktoberfest dates, weather,
location, entry tips, how to find a seat, and beer prices.

1. Dates & Weather

2025 Oktoberfest Germany Dates
September 20 – October 5, 2025
Oktoberfest always kicks off after September 15th,
running from the first Saturday to the first Sunday of October.
Because of this rule, the exact dates shift slightly every year.

The 2024 Oktoberfest ran from September 21st to October 6th,
and I actually went on the very first day, September 21st!
German weather is notoriously unpredictable,
so if you're planning a trip to Munich, make sure to check the forecast
and temperatures right up until the day you leave.
On the day I went, the daytime sun was so strong that wearing a thin long-sleeve shirt
made me feel quite warm.
But once the sun went down, the temperature plummeted.
It was too chilly to wear just my Dirndl (traditional dress), so I threw on knee-high socks,
and by nightfall, it got so cold that I had to put on a leather jacket.

2. Location, Entry, & Luggage Storage
📍 Theresienwiese
Bavariaring 5, 80336 München, Germany
Where is Oktoberfest held?
You can easily navigate using the address above.
From Marienplatz, the main square in Munich,
you can take the U-Bahn (U3 or U6 line) to Goetheplatz station,
and then it's just about a 10-minute walk.
Once you step out of the station, you'll spot painted arrows on the ground,
and since everyone is heading in the exact same direction,
finding your way is a breeze!

There is a single main flow of entry, so you can just follow the crowd.
But since we went on opening day,
the crowds were massive, and it took us quite a while just to reach the entrance.
Because it's such a huge global event,
there is a quick security bag check at the entrance.

Before heading through the entrance, we dropped off our large bags at the luggage storage.
If you try to bring in a suitcase or a large backpack,
you will definitely be turned away at the gate.
Small purses or handbags are perfectly fine,
but any large bags must be checked into the luggage storage first.

💸 Luggage Storage Fee: €5
⏰ Storage Closing Time: 12:30 AM (Midnight)
After paying the €5 fee and handing over your bag, you'll receive a numbered claim tag.
Once you're done partying, just hand this tag back to retrieve your bag,
so be absolutely sure not to lose it!
3. How to Get a Table

Once you walk in, you'll see massive tents run by different Munich breweries.
There are indoor seating areas inside these massive structures,
as well as outdoor beer gardens.
For the outdoor seating, there's no reservation system—
if you spot an empty seat, you can just sit down.
On the other hand, seats inside the massive indoor tents can be reserved in advance.
You can also walk into the indoor tents and sit if you find an open spot,
but during evenings and weekends, finding an unreserved empty seat is nearly impossible.

These massive indoor venues are called "tents."
How to Book a Tent Table
✅ Use the official tent websites
Reservations usually open several months in advance
and sell out incredibly fast.
✅ Book through travel agencies
You can book a day tour package that includes
guaranteed Oktoberfest tent seating,
though this option is generally more expensive than booking directly.
When booking seats, it's impossible to make a reservation for a small group.
You have to reserve an entire table, which fits about 10 people.
Locals might gather a bunch of friends to book a table together,
but if you're traveling to Munich like us,
having to pay for all 10 spots can be quite a budget-buster.

So, if you want to grab a seat at Oktoberfest,
you either have to look for empty spots in the outdoor seating area,
or join an Oktoberfest guided tour.
Those are pretty much your two best options.
We did manage to snag a spot when an outdoor seat opened up,
but honestly, even finding that was incredibly tough.
They say as the festival nears its end, the crowds thin out a bit,
making it much easier to find outdoor seating,
but since it was the very first day, it was extra challenging.
Luckily, right when we were wandering around,
a couple of spots opened up, so we squeezed in!
4. Beer Prices

At Oktoberfest, they don't serve your everyday beers;
they sell beers specially brewed just for the festival.
While standard beers usually have an ABV of around 4.5% to 5%,
festival beers range from 5.8% to 6.3% ABV.
On top of that, a single serving is 1 liter (1L)!

💸 Oktoberfest Beer Price per Mug: 15 Euros
Prices might vary slightly depending on the beer tent,
but you can expect to pay around 15 Euros for most.
There were three of us,
but since I'm a lightweight and another friend doesn't really drink beer,
we just ordered one giant mug to share among the three of us.

Of course, sharing one mug like we did
is incredibly rare;
almost everyone gets their own, and many go through several rounds.
Since many people don't realize these beers have a higher alcohol content than usual,
they drink fast and end up super tipsy.
In fact, a friend of mine who lives in Munich gave us a heads-up before we went:
"Watch your step, because there might be quite a bit of vomit on the ground!"

Aside from beer, the festival grounds are packed with delicious food stalls.
The classics are rotisserie chicken (Hendl), hot dogs, and pretzels.
We had already eaten a heavy meal beforehand,
so we weren't starving and just grabbed one hot dog and one pretzel to share.
🌭 Hot Dog: 7.5 Euros
🥨 Pretzel: 2 Euros
Pretzels come in all different sizes,
but since we just wanted a quick taste, we opted for a small one.

5. Restrooms & Other Facilities

Since it's a beer festival, and finding a public restroom in Europe is notoriously difficult,
I was quite worried about the restroom situation at Oktoberfest.
However, restrooms are set up all over the festival grounds,
and contrary to my usual travel experiences,
the line for the men's restroom was actually much longer than the women's!
I guess it's because there are so many male visitors at the festival.
Either way, the restrooms were clean, and the wait wasn't long at all, which was super convenient.

Before actually visiting Oktoberfest on my Munich trip,
I thought it was just a festival for drinking beer,
but there are actually so many amusement rides!
From sky-high swing rides and giant ferris wheels to bumper cars and pirate ship rides,
there is so much to see and do beyond just having a pint.

There are also tons of souvenir shops to explore,
so there is plenty to see and do even if you aren't a big beer drinker!
Music fills the air from all the different tents,
and every now and then, a familiar tune would blast through the speakers.
Singing along with everyone was an absolute blast!

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do with large bags when entering the Oktoberfest venue, and how much is the storage fee?

Is it possible to reserve indoor tent seats at Oktoberfest for a small group of 2 to 3 people?
Indoor tent seats cannot be reserved for small groups; you must book an entire table that seats 10 people. For small groups, it is recommended to find unreserved outdoor seats or join a guided tour.
What are the price and alcohol content of the festival beer sold at Oktoberfest?
