Exploring Munich's Marienplatz and Nearby Gems
New Town Hall and the Local Market
When I embarked on my European adventure,
Munich was primarily a convenient base for exploring charming smaller towns nearby.
However, I still dedicated a full day to discover the city center,
snapping photos and soaking in the atmosphere.
Let me share a few must-visit spots in Munich's historic Old Town.
1. The Road to Marienplatz: Kaufingerstraße

Honestly, I didn't have huge expectations for Munich itself, as my main goal was to visit the surrounding smaller towns.
But since I was here, I figured I had to explore, so I headed towards Marienplatz bright and early.
I wasn't staying in the very heart of the city, so it was a bit of a walk. As you approach the Old Town, you'll see these impressive city gates or walls, which are remnants of the medieval fortifications that once encircled Munich.
They're medieval relics, yet they look incredibly well-preserved, almost as if they were built recently.

Past the city walls, the path to the square is Kaufingerstraße, Munich's main shopping street. It's truly picturesque!
Germany has a completely different charm from Spain or Italy. The streets feel wider and impeccably clean, making it a real pleasure to walk around.

Unlike the narrow, cobblestone alleyways you often find in Western and Southern Europe, Germany and Austria were exactly as I'd imagined: pristine and orderly. The perfect weather probably made everything look even more beautiful.
2. Marienplatz and the New Town Hall Glockenspiel

Stepping into Marienplatz, the first thing that grabs your attention is Munich's New Town Hall. It's incredibly grand and massive.
Truly magnificent. It's quite something to imagine civil servants working in such an elaborate building!

In the center of the square stands a column topped with a statue.
It's a statue of the Virgin Mary, which is actually how Marienplatz got its name.
Though, it's a bit hard to see from below.

The central tower of the Town Hall features mechanical figures. These aren't cute dolls, but rather intricate clockwork figures that come to life, dancing and twirling, daily at 11 AM and 12 PM.
Honestly, it's a simple spectacle, but tourists gather, craning their necks to watch it. It's quite a scene!
I actually went off to explore other areas and deliberately returned to catch it. While it's not an absolute must-see, you might feel a pang of regret if you miss it, just out of curiosity! It only lasts about 10 minutes, so it's worth a quick look.

To the east of the square, you'll find another elegant building: the Old Town Hall.
Funnily enough, I initially thought this was the New Town Hall, and the New Town Hall looked like the older one to me!
3. Viktualienmarkt: Marienplatz's Local Gem

Just a quick 5-minute walk from Marienplatz, you'll discover the vibrant Viktualienmarkt.
Here, you can browse colorful produce, grab a bite at various food stalls, and immerse yourself in local life.
It's open from 8 AM to 8 PM, making it a perfect stop while exploring Munich's city center. By the way, European radishes always seem so clean and slender – quite fascinating!

I tried goulash at a soup stall here, and it was surprisingly delicious. German food wasn't always my favorite, but this warm, hearty soup really hit the spot!
It's a pretty universally appealing flavor.

After a full day of sightseeing, I wrapped up my visit by admiring the Town Hall's night view. However, I actually found the Town Hall much more beautiful during the day.
It was one of the few city landmarks in Europe where the night view didn't quite impress me. Haha!
Munich, I've concluded, isn't a place you'd necessarily spend a long time in unless you're using it as a hub for nearby smaller towns. Still, for a taste of German atmosphere, its convenience and cleanliness make it a perfectly good destination for a one or two-day trip.
Alternatively, consider joining a walking tour like the one below to enrich your experience.
Since I was traveling at a very relaxed pace, I hadn't considered a tour at the time.

Taking a tour and hearing explanations would definitely help fill a potentially quiet day in Munich.
