Rothenburg: Germany's Fairytale Medieval Gem
A Day Trip by Train from Munich
When planning my trip to Munich, I was actually more excited about exploring the charming smaller towns nearby than Munich itself. Rothenburg ob der Tauber, in particular, captured my heart through photos, and I knew I had to visit. It's such an exquisitely quaint and beautiful town, and I'm so glad I made the journey.
1. Getting to Rothenburg from Munich by Train

While you can certainly visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber from Munich, it's quite a distance to consider it a "nearby" excursion. This enchanting town is roughly midway between Frankfurt and Munich. The train journey takes about 3 hours one way, and it's never a direct route – you'll always need to make at least one transfer.
Despite the distance, I was determined to go, and while it can be a bit inconvenient and the cost adds up, it was absolutely worth it. To save some money and hassle, it’s best to purchase your train tickets in advance.
You can purchase tickets through the official Deutsche Bahn website or their app.

Simply enter your departure (Munich) and arrival (Rothenburg ob der Tauber) stations. As you type a few letters, several station options will appear, allowing you to select the correct one.
As mentioned, there are no direct trains from Munich to Rothenburg.

You'll find various routes with anywhere from one to four transfers. Prices vary widely, so choose a time that suits your schedule and budget.
The screenshot above shows a train search on Trip.com, which I found to be even more user-friendly than the official Deutsche Bahn site. For ease of searching and language options, I highly recommend using Trip.com. (Train fares are typically the same).

2. Exploring the Town's Picture-Perfect Streets
📍 Marktplatz Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Marktpl. 5, 91541 Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

Upon arriving at the train station, a short walk will lead you directly into the city center and the beautiful Marktplatz (Market Square). Seriously, isn't it just stunning?
These distinctive timber-framed buildings are called Fachwerkhaus, but what's truly important is how incredibly picturesque they are. This town has wonderfully preserved its medieval character. Each house boasts a different color, unique timber patterns, and charming flowers adorning the windows. It truly feels like walking through a movie set.
📍 Plönlein
u. Schmiedgasse, 91541 Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

This is Plönlein, one of Rothenburg's most iconic and photographed spots. Looking at it again, it's just so beautiful and begs to be captured in photos, doesn't it? Haha!
Just a heads-up: despite its storybook appearance, vehicles do use this road, so be mindful of traffic when taking your pictures.

Honestly, there are so many beautiful spots that you can take great photos almost anywhere. But if you're looking to elevate your pictures, consider wearing something light-colored, like a white dress. I wasn't thrilled with my outfit choice that day, looking back!
3. Rothenburg: A Christmas Wonderland

You might remember Schneeballen (snowball pastries) having a moment as a popular dessert trend a few years back. Rothenburg is often cited as the origin of these unique treats, which is why I sought them out here. *However, upon closer research, it seems Rothenburg is more accurately credited with popularizing Schneeballen rather than being their exact birthplace.
I'm not usually one for snacks, so I never tried them back home, but since this was the supposed "origin," I gave it a try. My verdict? They were okay, nothing spectacular, but I'm glad I experienced them once.
Rothenburg is also incredibly famous for its Christmas market. I wasn't there during the season, but if you're traveling to Germany in late November, definitely consider adding it to your itinerary. Even outside the holiday season, the town's atmosphere already feels wonderfully festive and Christmassy!
💡This year's (2026) Christmas market dates are from 11/20 to 12/23.
📍 Käthe Wohlfahrt - Weihnachtsdorf
Herrngasse 1, 91541 Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

Rothenburg is home to the flagship store of Käthe Wohlfahrt, a world-renowned specialist in Christmas decorations. Even if you don't plan to buy anything, it's absolutely worth a visit just to browse its magical displays.
Rothenburg is actually a little closer to Frankfurt, so you'll find more organized tours departing from there. I chose to travel via Munich because I'd heard Frankfurt wasn't as exciting. However, managing all the train transfers with my mother was quite stressful and not the easiest experience.
Of course, I don't regret visiting such a beautiful place. But if you're traveling with elderly parents or are concerned about navigating multiple train changes, I highly recommend considering a guided tour. The round-trip train costs and tour fees are often quite similar.
