Discover Oden KELP, a cozy hidden oden bar in Kyoto loved by locals. Read our full review on finding this alleyway gem, what to order, and how to book.
Kyoto is filled with incredible culinary secrets, and today I'm sharing one of my absolute favorite finds: a cozy local oden bar that makes for the perfect late-night dining experience.
Since it's a true neighborhood hotspot, you won't find English or Korean menus here, but the authentic atmosphere and welcoming vibes make it an unforgettable stop on your Kyoto itinerary.

We booked our spot for a Sunday night at 9:00 PM and headed over.

The bar is tucked away in a quiet alleyway. As we walked down, we actually found ourselves wondering, "Are we in the right place?"
It's located near the Pokemon Center Kyoto and was an easy walk from our hotel, the Richmond Hotel Premier Kyoto Shijo.

The interior is clean, modern, and beautifully intimate. Best of all, the staff are exceptionally friendly and welcoming!
We opted for seats right at the counter bar.

Because this is a true local spot, they don't have English or Korean menus. We used a visual translation app to navigate the choices.
Some of the handwritten items didn't translate perfectly, so we had to skip a few of the more mysterious options, which was a bit of a shame but all part of the adventure!

To start, they served us a complimentary welcome drink and a refreshing, jelly-like appetizer.

Of course, a cold Japanese draft beer (namabeer) is an absolute must-have here.

We ordered the classic oden staple—daikon radish—alongside one of their highly recommended items, the shrimp balls.

The simmered daikon was incredibly tender, practically melting in our mouths. The shrimp balls were equally amazing, packed with juicy, snappy pieces of fresh shrimp.

Next, we tried the deep-fried shiitake mushroom. While it had a slightly rich, oily finish, it was served piping hot and tasted absolutely delicious.

We also ordered a scallion-and-cheese stuffed tofu pouch (kinchaku) and a classic oden egg. I'm a huge fan of tofu pouches, and this recommended cheese-filled version was absolutely fantastic.

To wrap up our meal, they kindly served us a warm, comforting cup of tea.
Throughout the night, the staff was incredibly attentive and high-spirited. We were actually the only tourists in the entire shop; the rest of the crowd was made up of young local couples and friends in their 20s and 30s.
If you're looking to dive into the local nightlife scene, "Oden KELP" is a fantastic choice. The vibrant energy and friendly hospitality left us with such a great memory of Kyoto.
An English menu would make it perfect, but navigating the language barrier is all part of the charm! Highly recommended.
