Did you know Vietnam boasts stunning coastal sand dunes? Discover Phan Rang, an accessible alternative to Mui Ne, offering breathtaking desert-like landscapes near Nha Trang.
Phan Rang desert
Vietnam boasts two deserts, and while Mui Ne might be the most famous, this spot is truly a hidden gem!
But here's the thing... when I arrived, I saw the ocean right alongside it!
How is that even possible?
With the sea right there, how could a desert form??
So I looked into it...
Strictly speaking, these aren't true deserts, but rather impressive sand dunes!
Anyway,
When comparing it to Mui Ne, one major advantage that immediately stands out is its incredible accessibility.
It's significantly closer!
This means less travel fatigue and more precious time saved to explore!
Ready to dive in and see it all, stop by stop?
For Nha Trang Phan Rang Tours, you can find English-guided tours right here.
(And this one's for Korean speakers)
Our first captivating stop is Hang Rai!
They say it's a magnificent sight if you manage to time your visit with high tide, but truth be told, the coastal road leading up to it was so incredibly beautiful, it almost outshone the destination itself!
Normally, travel on a Phan Rang desert tour can feel a bit monotonous with repetitive, barren landscapes, but cruising along such scenic views made the journey absolutely delightful.

Along the way, we even made a quick stop at an observation deck – it felt like a hidden gem, definitely a favorite with the locals who were all excitedly snapping photos!

Our amazing staff even treated us to refreshing coconuts!
With this stunning backdrop, we snagged some fantastic photos and enjoyed a cool, refreshing drink.
Now, for the Nha Trang desert tour itself,
our very first destination is Hang Rai, as I mentioned,
but I'll breeze through it quickly (my decision!).
If I were to delve into every detail, this post would become excessively long, and we have so many incredible spots to cover!
So, just the highlights.

After a lovely stroll along the promenade,

Since it gets quite warm, you can dip your feet in here (though a heads-up: the water is rather warm!).
Or, even better, grab a refreshing beer and soak in the views!

I moved at a good pace, which gave me some extra time to relax and take a brief break.
Our second stop takes us to the tranquil Trung Son Co Tu Buddhist Temple.

From here, you can get incredible panoramic views of the surrounding area. Plus, there's a hidden path that leads all the way to the summit, adding a fun little adventure to your visit!
(But since the weather is blazing hot, you might get annoyed while looking for it, haha.)
Once you're up there, take in the cool breeze while gazing down at the city, and then it's time for a hearty lunch to fuel up before your Nha Trang desert tour.

And this was incredible! We went for BBQ, and it was so incredibly generous, we almost burst.
From samgyeopsal (pork belly, though not local, of course) to oysters, webfoot octopus, shrimp, fried rice, and more...

In the end, we couldn't finish it all.
I shared it with this friend, hehe.

After enjoying a refreshing watermelon for dessert, it was finally time to head off to the main event of the Nha Trang Phan Rang tour: the Vietnamese desert!

This is the waiting area before departure, where you can relax with a cool drink at the cafe, or watch the sheep and horses freely roaming around outside.
And we're finally off!
We're heading there in this, and if you want a thrilling ride, grab the very front seat!

After that massive meal, I was starting to feel a bit sleepy, but riding in that open-air jeep? It immediately woke me right up! Haha.

We arrived.
Everyone else got out with their shoes on, but I thought to myself,
Hah, they don't know a thing. It's much more comfortable barefoot here~
Plus, there's the joy of feeling the sand between your toes~
I thought, then took off my shoes and got out, only to immediately come back and put them on again! LOL.
Last time I went, it was November... this time, it was May...
The sand's temperature.... it was no joke! LOL.

Perhaps it was because I'd experienced it once before, or maybe the wind was just gentler today, but last time, the whipping sand stung so much it made me cry out, but this time, it was bearable.

After fully enjoying the White Dune and various other spots, taking photos, and heading back...
you'll be a complete mess! LOL.
If you touch any exposed skin, like your face or arms, sand will just rain down...
Forget everything else, all I wanted was a shower and a massage.

As we were heading back to the wildlife park from before, if you were feeling a bit sad, you could always spend more time playing with these amazing creatures.
There's also a handy spot in front of the restrooms behind the building where you can quickly rinse off your feet.
(I truly tried to keep this short, but look how much I've already written...)
I actually went on a Korean-speaking guided tour myself,
but if you're looking for an English-speaking guided tour, this is the one to check out!
The itinerary felt incredibly well-planned and rich with experiences. That beautiful coastal drive and the absolutely generous meal were both highlights.
Next up, I'll take you to another Vietnamese desert (or rather, sand dunes) – Mui Ne! For now, let's wrap up this incredible Nha Trang Phan Rang tour.
The Phan Rang sand dunes are much closer to Nha Trang than Mui Ne. This saves travel time and reduces physical fatigue.
At Hang Rai, you can drive along the beautiful coastal road and enjoy the scenery. You can also walk along the trails, relax by dipping your feet in the warm water, or enjoy a refreshing beer.
Lunch is a BBQ feast, generously served with pork belly, oysters, webfoot octopus, shrimp, and fried rice. Watermelon is also provided as dessert after the meal.
Yes, after visiting White Dunes, there is a simple foot-washing area available in front of the restrooms behind the wildlife park building where you return.
