I recently returned from an amazing trip to Nha Trang during the Lunar New Year (Tet holiday) in February 2026. If you are planning a trip here soon, you might have heard about the recent strict crackdowns on illegal currency exchange at local gold shops. To avoid any unnecessary drama or high fees, I decided to skip the gold shops entirely and withdraw Vietnamese Dong (VND) directly from local Nha Trang ATMs.
Since I was using the Shinhan SOL Travel Card, I quickly realized that VPBank is the only local bank offering completely fee-free ATM withdrawals. Here is my honest experience and a step-by-step guide on how to withdraw cash at the VPBank ATM in downtown Nha Trang.
Unlike some other Southeast Asian destinations where credit cards are widely accepted, Nha Trang is still heavily cash-based. Even at places that do accept cards, they often tack on an extra transaction fee.
Long story short: Cash is absolute king in Nha Trang! 🤑
While gold shops like Kim Vinh and Kim Chung used to be the go-to exchange spots for tourists, local authorities have heavily cracked down on unauthorized foreign exchange. To save myself the headache of dealing with potentially sketchy exchange rates or legal issues, I opted for the safest, most modern route: using a local ATM.
But here is the catch: if you use the Shinhan SOL Travel Card, VPBank is the only ATM network that won't charge you a withdrawal fee. Other ATMs can charge hefty fees—sometimes as high as ~$4 for a basic ~$64 withdrawal. If you plan to withdraw around ~$640 for your trip, those fees will seriously eat into your budget!
I didn't want the hassle of ordering and registering a brand-new travel card just for this trip, so I decided to stick with my SOL card and just make the trip to VPBank.
Before going, I read a few warnings online about using the VPBank ATMs:
▶️ The Location: It is about 0.8 miles (a 20-minute walk) from most major tourist hotels in the city center. I was staying at the Regalia Gold Hotel and preferred not to walk in the heat, so I booked a quick, cheap Grab bike ride instead.
▶️ Out of Service: There are only two ATM machines, and it's common for one of them to be out of order or undergoing maintenance.
▶️ Long Lines: Because it is so popular with tourists looking for fee-free withdrawals, you might have to wait in line.
▶️ Card Swallowing: There are rare online reports of the machine eating cards, though this is highly uncommon.
▶️ Cash Shortages: Sometimes the machines run out of cash, especially during busy holiday weekends.
Despite these warnings, my experience went incredibly smoothly! On both my first and last day of the trip, I withdrew my cash without any major issues. Here is how it went:
Since it was the Tet holiday, the bank lobby itself was closed, but the ATM vestibule was open. When I arrived, a technician was actually refilling cash into the outer machine. Since that takes quite a while, I used the inner machine instead.
I arrived around 9:00 AM, and there were only two people ahead of me. I barely had to wait at all!
Pro-tip: If you are nervous about whether the machines are working, filter the Google Maps reviews by "newest" to see live updates from other travelers before you make the trip.
By the way, there is an Eximbank right across the street if you ever need a backup option.
How to Withdraw Cash from VPBank ATM (Step-by-Step)
Let's walk through the exact steps to get your cash. I used the inner machine because the outer one was still being serviced.
First, insert your card.
On the very first screen, select ENGLISH by pressing the corresponding physical button on the right side of the screen.
Next, enter your PIN.
For the Shinhan SOL Travel Card (and many other international cards), you need to enter a 6-digit PIN. Simply type your 4-digit PIN + 00 and press the button next to "OK".

On the next screen, select WITHDRAWAL.
Then, select CURRENT ACCOUNT.
Now, choose your withdrawal amount. Many people withdraw smaller amounts, but I opted to withdraw 5,000,000 VND (roughly ~$179) twice. On my last day, I came back and did the exact same thing again. Honestly, I should have just taken it all out the first time to save myself the extra trip!
Sometimes the receipt printer is out of paper. The screen will ask if you want to proceed without a receipt. Just click "OK" to continue your transaction.
And just like that, cash dispensed!
The machine dispensed a nice mix of denominations. Having plenty of cash made it so much easier to pay at local massage shops, fruit stalls, and popular restaurants like Chao Mao.
After spending a couple of completely cash-free days relaxing at The Anam Cam Ranh resort, I headed back into town for my final day and realized I needed cash again. So, it was back to VPBank...
Since it was around 1:00 PM, there was a queue this time. I waited for about 15 minutes because one of the two machines was broken, leaving only the outer machine working.
Almost everyone in line was a fellow traveler doing the exact same thing! My withdrawal of 5,000,000 VND cost me exactly ~$179 with zero added fees. With fresh cash in hand, I was ready to explore Cho Dam market, grab some local coffee, and enjoy one last massage!
