How to Take the Skyliner to Shin-Okubo

Arriving at Tokyo Narita Airport and wondering how to get to the city center?
It's a common question!
Personally, I highly recommend taking the **Skyliner**, as it's the
**fastest way to reach downtown Tokyo**.
Today, I'll walk you through everything in detail: **how to book, exchange, and board the Skyliner,**
**and even how to transfer to Shin-Okubo in downtown Tokyo!**
First, let's go over **how to pre-book your Skyliner ticket**.
Based on the Keisei Electric Railway official website, a discounted one-way ticket costs 2,310 yen,
but it's more expensive at 2,580 yen if you buy it on the spot.
**❗️ Therefore, I highly recommend booking in advance if possible.**

Japanese transportation can be quite expensive, so make sure to book in advance and save some money!
Next, I'll explain **how to exchange your pre-booked ticket**
**at the airport**.
Based on my experience at Narita Airport Terminal 1, after you pass through immigration,
look to your left and you'll spot the escalator down to the train platforms.
Follow the blue signs for **KS (Keisei)**, and you'll soon find the
**'Information Center'**.
Here, simply **show the QR code for your booked ticket, and you can easily exchange it**
for your physical ticket.
Keep in mind that no matter how many tickets you buy, only one QR code will be issued.
Those who booked round-trip tickets might find this a bit confusing.
**✅ In this case, two tickets are registered under one QR code.**
So, just tell the staff at the exchange counter that you only need the one-way ticket
from the airport to the city center for now!
(You can use the remaining ticket when you return to the airport.)
Also, when exchanging your ticket, if you don't specify a time,
the staff will automatically book you on the next available Skyliner, so keep that in mind!
Next, I'll guide you through **how to board after exchanging your ticket**.
Keep following the signs marked 'KS,' and you'll reach the Keisei Line ticket gates.
Insert your Skyliner ticket into the gate and proceed to platforms 4/5 for boarding.
**❗️ It's crucial not to throw away your ticket at this point, as you'll need it later for transferring to the city subway.**
On your ticket, you'll see your assigned Car number and Seat number.
Since all seats on the Skyliner are reserved,
you simply need to find your assigned car and seat to board.
If you have a lot of luggage, you might be worried, but
there's a separate luggage compartment behind the seats,
and the space between rows is generous enough to fit even a large suitcase
in front of your seat, so there's no need to worry!
While the Skyliner offers incredibly fast travel
to the city center, it has one limitation: it only stops
at Nippori or Ueno.
Therefore, you absolutely need to alight at one of these two stations to transfer.
Lastly, I'll explain how to transfer to the Yamanote Line
to reach Shin-Okubo.
For transferring to the Yamanote Line,
it's faster to alight at 'Nippori Station'.
After getting off, take the escalator up, and you'll see
the 'JR Transfer Gate'.
Here, you can transfer to the Yamanote Line.
However, because Keisei and JR are different companies,
you'll need tickets for both lines to transfer.
If you have an IC card, ▶️ simply insert your
Skyliner ticket into the gate, then tap your IC card,
and you can transfer without needing to purchase a separate ticket.
But if you don't have a transportation card like me,
▶️ you'll need to purchase a JR ticket from the ticket machine next to the gate.
To do this, you'll need to insert both your Skyliner ticket and
the JR line fare into the machine to get your ticket.
Once you have your ticket, pass through the gate.
Then, head to Platform 11 for trains heading towards Shin-Okubo –
that's where you'll catch the Yamanote Line!

to Shin-Okubo in the city center.
Finally, let's quickly summarize everything.
The fastest way to get to Shin-Okubo is by taking the Skyliner.
It's recommended to book your Skyliner tickets in advance domestically
to get a better price.
You can exchange your ticket at the airport traveler center,
and simply board according to the car/seat number on your ticket.
To reach Shin-Okubo, you'll need to transfer to the JR Yamanote Line
at Nippori.
You'll need your Skyliner ticket and cash for the transfer, so
it's highly recommended to prepare them in advance.
First-time visitors to Tokyo might find this process
quite complex.
However, if you follow the instructions I've shared today, you'll find
getting to the city center surprisingly easy.
So, follow along closely and have a safe journey to the city!
A pre-booked Skyliner ticket costs 2,310 yen one-way, whereas an on-site purchase costs 2,580 yen one-way. Therefore, you can save 270 yen per one-way trip by pre-booking.
