Welcome to Tokyo! ✈️ The very first step of your Japan adventure is figuring out how to get from the airport to the city.
While there are quite a few ways to get downtown from Narita International Airport (NRT),
the two fastest and most comfortable options are hands down:
The Keisei Skyliner and the Narita Express (N'EX).
I'm going to break down the differences between these two trains,
share my personal recommendation, give you a discount hack for booking,
and show you exactly how to board without getting lost!

Narita Express (N'EX) Round Trip Ticket (Narita Airport <> Tokyo) - Klook
However, when you weigh the price against the sheer speed,
the Keisei Skyliner is an unbeatable option.
I'm all about saving some extra travel budget for sushi and shopping,
so I personally opted for the Skyliner. 😊

Rather than buying your tickets in person at the Tokyo Skyliner station,
booking online in advance is significantly cheaper.

Once you clear immigration and grab your bags,
just look for the blue "Train" signs with the "KS" logo and follow them down.

Keep walking until you see the Keisei Information Center.
Here, you simply show the QR code from your online voucher to exchange it for a physical ticket.

Pick your preferred departure time, and you'll get your reserved seat ticket!
Trains generally run 2 to 3 times an hour,
so even if you just missed one, you won't be waiting long for the next.
From getting my ticket to reaching the boarding platform took less than 5 minutes!

Pro Tip: If you bought a round-trip pass, they will also hand you an exchange ticket
for your return journey. Keep this somewhere safe!

Take the escalator down and you're right at the boarding area.
I boarded from platforms 4 and 5.
The layout is surprisingly straightforward, so even first-time visitors won't get lost!

The interior honestly felt more spacious and comfortable than many premium regional trains back home!

There was plenty of dedicated space for large suitcases,
and the legroom between seats was wonderfully wide.

Since all seats are reserved, there's zero stress about finding a spot.
It was the perfect way to sit back, relax, and decompress after a long flight.

🚄 Skyliner Route: Narita Airport to Shinjuku
1. Narita Airport → Nippori Station (approx. 36 mins)
2. Nippori Station → Shinjuku Station (JR Line, approx. 20 mins)
Transferring to the JR line at Nippori is incredibly quick and seamless!
My accommodations were around the Ginza and Asakusa areas, so I used
Ueno Station for both my arrival and departure. The routing was fantastic.

When it's time to head back to the airport,
just follow the signs for "Keisei Narita Airport" at the station.
Take that return exchange voucher you saved from day one,
swap it for a timed ticket at the counter,
and board from Platform 2 (if departing from Ueno Station). Easy!

The Narita Express (N'EX) is convenient as it allows direct travel from Narita Airport to Shinjuku and Shibuya without transfers. In contrast, the Skyliner requires a transfer to JR at Nippori Station or Ueno Station to reach Shinjuku Station.
The one-way price for Skyliner online booking is ~$13 on KKDAY and ~$13 on KLOOK. If you purchase more than ~$46 on KKDAY, you can get an additional ~$2 discount by applying the 'KK2605JP3K' discount code.
Take the Skyliner from Narita Airport to Nippori Station for about 36 minutes, then transfer to JR at Nippori Station and travel for about 20 more minutes to Shinjuku Station. The total travel time, including transfer time, is approximately 56 minutes.
After immigration, follow the 'Train 철도 KS' sign to the 'KS Keisei Information Center', show your QR voucher, and exchange it for a ticket. Select your desired time to receive a reserved seat ticket, then board from platform 4 or 5.
