I recently visited the Namyang Shrine in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province. It was a beautiful Sunday, the kind of day you just can't stay indoors, so I decided to explore!
This is the entrance to the Namyang Shrine, which doubles as the parking lot entrance. As you cross the bridge to enter, you'll notice a lovely river flowing alongside. It's beautifully maintained with a walking path, and I saw many people enjoying a stroll along its banks.🥰
Parking Information: Paid Parking
Upon entering, you'll immediately find the parking lot. Unfortunately, as it's private property, there's a fee to park.😔
It operates 24 hours a day, and you can only pay with a credit card.
The basic rate is ~$1 for the first 3 hours.
After that, it's an additional ~$0 for every 30 minutes.
The maximum daily parking fee is ~$8.
Three hours is usually enough time to explore the grounds thoroughly, so budgeting around ~$1 for parking should cover your visit.
Even though I visited on a Sunday afternoon, the parking lot was incredibly spacious and comfortable. However, it wasn't during Mass hours. If you're planning a casual outing and not attending a service, it's a good idea to avoid Mass times for a more relaxed experience. I'll explain the Mass schedule later in this post.😊
Right after the entrance, you'll see a sign explaining that Namyang Shrine is not a sports facility or a public park. It's a sacred site where countless unknown Catholics were martyred during the Byeongin Persecution in 1866, and it was the first place in Korean Catholic Church history to be officially declared a pilgrimage site. While it's open for general visitors to enjoy, it's best to approach it with a respectful and reverent mindset.
Restrooms: Two Locations Within the Shrine
There are two outdoor restrooms available. The first one is conveniently located right after you enter, and the second one is further up the path, where the main shrine grounds truly begin. While there are certainly restrooms inside the main cathedral, these two outdoor facilities are the most accessible for those simply enjoying a walk around the grounds. The interiors were very clean, making it a pleasant spot for a leisurely stroll.
Namyang Shrine is renowned for its stunning architecture, and you'll spot impressive structures right from the entrance. There's even a seating area designed like a movie theater, perfect for a short break.
Statues are scattered throughout the grounds, harmonizing beautifully with Namyang Shrine's expansive natural setting, inviting a moment of contemplation.
Here's a statue of Archangel Gabriel. The quality of the flowers in his hand was incredible! I was truly amazed at how such intricate forms could be crafted from iron; it was so realistic and beautiful.
Namyang Shrine Grand Cathedral Mass Schedule
Undoubtedly, the most striking structure here is the Grand Cathedral. It's composed of two cylindrical towers, with a unique bell positioned between them that chimes every hour. This magnificent Grand Cathedral at Namyang Shrine was designed by world-renowned architect Mario Botta.
Mass at the Grand Cathedral is held every day from Tuesday to Sunday, excluding Mondays, at 11:00 AM. The general opening hours are quite generous, from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM. On my visit, the weather was so pleasant that I didn't feel the need to go indoors, but it's good to know you can take a break inside on very hot or cold days.
I captured these charming flowers, which bloom like clusters of grapes. They are called 'Heory' (Korean Forsythia), a native Korean plant that thrives in sunny spots. Namyang Shrine certainly gets plenty of sunshine and is truly beautiful!🥰
Large rosary beads are placed along the paths, creating a harmonious blend with nature.
The grounds are incredibly spacious, making it a wonderful place for a walk. Since it's a Catholic pilgrimage site, there are no loud noises anywhere; the atmosphere is generally quiet and reverent, which makes it perfect for taking photos alone. This peaceful ambiance is precisely why I consider it one of Gyeonggi Province's must-visit destinations.
During my spring visit, I also spotted sansuyu (cornelian cherry) flowers blooming. It always feels like spring passes by too quickly!
There's also a beautifully designed space where you can light candles and offer prayers. Each architectural element here is truly impressive and a joy to behold. You can purchase candles right on site. While credit cards might not be accepted, an account number is provided, so purchasing them should be easy enough. Large candles cost ~$2, and small ones are ~$1.
If you're looking for a beautiful and meaningful day trip destination in Gyeonggi Province, especially during spring or any season, I highly recommend Hwaseong's Namyang Shrine.
