If you're planning a trip to Nagoya,
you absolutely must set aside a day
to visit two of the most incredible places nearby:
the UNESCO World Heritage village of Shirakawa-go
and Takayama, often called the "Little Kyoto."
At first, I spent so much time debating
between taking the JR train and renting a car.
But after actually going on a bus tour,
I realized there's absolutely no easier way to do it! :)

5) Summer Bus Tour Essentials |
1. Why I Chose the Bus Tour

At first, I looked into the JR train and renting a car.
But when I actually ran the numbers,
the bus tour saved so much time
and the cost difference was surprisingly minimal.
JR vs. Car Rental vs. Bus Tour | |||
Category | JR | Car Rental | Bus Tour |
Travel Time | Approx. 2.5 to 3 hours (including transfers) | Approx. 2.5 hours | Comfortable, direct ride to destinations |
Cost | JR + Nohi Bus Roundtrip: Approx. ~$58 | Rental fee + Fuel + Tolls | Bookable from ~$38 |
Pros | Independent travel | Flexible schedule | Korean-speaking guide, hassle-free transit |
Cons | Difficult to coordinate transfer times | Driving fatigue, parking worries | Fixed itinerary |

If you aren't confident about driving in Japan
or if it's your first visit, a bus tour is by far the most comfortable option.
Being able to rest on the bus between stops
saved so much of my energy haha.
Even though there was a set schedule,
once we got off the bus, we were completely free to explore on our own!
2. How to Book the Bus Tour & Discount Info

I booked mine through Youtourbus.
I had used them before on a trip to the small towns around Fukuoka,
so I trusted them enough to book again—
and they didn't disappoint! My satisfaction was super high again haha.
Best of all, our speaking guide shared so many details during the ride—
from local eateries, shopping tips, photo spots, to ideas for our free time.
This made navigating not only these small towns
but also downtown Nagoya
so much easier with all the insider tips!

I highly recommend booking at least 1 to 2 weeks in advance.
This is an incredibly popular route, so it can sell out quickly
during peak seasons.
Plus, the earlier you book, the better the rate.
Regular Price: Approx. ~$50
Discount Price: Approx. ~$40

3. Shirakawa-go: The UNESCO World Heritage Village

Seeing Shirakawa-go in person was infinitely more beautiful
than seeing it in photos.
The entire village felt like a scene straight out of a Ghibli movie.
It was absolutely stunning in the early summer,
but since it's also famous for its winter snowscapes and autumn foliage,
It's the kind of place that makes you want to visit in every single season.
Must-Visit Spots
Shirakawago Observation Deck
Three Houses
Pudding House
📍 Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observatory
Ogimachi, Shirakawa, Ono District, Gifu 501-5627 Japan
📍 Shirakawago Three Houses
Ogimachi, Shirakawa, Ono District, Gifu 501-5627 Japan
📍 Shirakawago Pudding House
702 Ogimachi, Shirakawa, Ono District, Gifu 501-5627 Japan

You absolutely must go up to the observation deck.
It was a bit hot, but the view of the gassho-style village
looking down from the top was absolutely breathtaking.
It's also the best spot for gorgeous photos,
so if you have the time, I highly recommend it!

And about the "Three Houses," where so many people
go to capture that perfect photo of a lifetime—there are actually two locations.
The one on the left is the original (it's quite a walk),
and the one on the right is No. 2.
Since No. 2 is right near cafes and restaurants,
it was much easier to get to.
📍 783 Ogimachi
783 Ogimachi, Shirakawa, Ono District, Gifu 501-5627 Japan

Oh, and by the way! I booked my tour for Wednesday
to avoid a rainy day forecast,
but of all days, the Pudding House was closed! 😭
As it turns out, many shops in Takayama and Shirakawago
are actually closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays,
so I'd highly recommend booking a different day of the week if you can!
4. Takayama, the "Little Kyoto"

Takayama is a place that truly deserves
the title "Little Kyoto."
From the nostalgic street vibes to the historic wooden buildings,
the classic Kyoto charm was everywhere.
Must-Visit Spots
Sanmachi Suji (Sanmachi Street)
Takayama Jinya
Hida Beef Sushi
📍 Sanmachi Historic District
Kamiichinomachi, Takayama, Gifu 506-0000 Japan
📍 Takayama Jinya
1-chōme-5 Hachikenmachi, Takayama, Gifu 506-0012 Japan
📍 Hida Kotteushi
82 Kamisannomachi, Takayama, Gifu 506-0846 Japan

For Hida Beef Sushi, I highly recommend Hida Kotteushi.
If the line is too long or they happen to be closed,
you can head over to Kinno Kottegyu,
which is just a 2 to 3-minute walk away. Haha, they are actually run by the same place!!

5. What to Pack for a Summer Nagoya Bus Tour

If you're planning a trip during the summer, make sure to pack these essentials!
The sun was much stronger than expected, so it got pretty hot.
Packing Checklist
Parasol (Sun umbrella)
Sunscreen / Sunglasses
Comfortable sneakers
Power bank (Portable charger)
While you'll spend about 30 minutes to an hour
traveling on the bus between stops,
you'll be walking around a lot once you arrive at each attraction,
so comfortable shoes are an absolute lifesaver.
Also, because there are just so many beautiful photo spots,
your phone battery might drain much faster than you think! Haha.
I highly recommend bringing a portable power bank with you!

If you prefer the freedom to linger in one spot for as long as you want,
renting a car might be a better fit.
But if it’s your first time visiting,
I found that a bus tour is so much more efficient!

Specifically, YoutourBus made the journey so smooth and convenient.
The guide even shared top-notch local food spots and insider tips,
which made the trip absolutely perfect! :)
If you’re planning a trip to the charming towns near Nagoya,
I highly recommend this Shirakawa-go and Takayama
day trip bus tour!
