If you're looking for a refreshing day trip from Seoul, let me introduce you to Mudangso Recreational Area in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi-do.
Located in the stunning Hwaaksan Valley, Mudangso offers free life vest rentals and is easily accessible by bus, making it perfect for those relying on public transportation.

This valley is fed directly by the cool waters flowing down from Hwaaksan Mountain.
While the main Hwaaksan Valley is known for its notoriously cold temperatures, Mudangso is a touch less frigid, making it surprisingly more comfortable for prolonged water activities.
The valley is conveniently located right next to Gwangak Minbak and Wildflower Camp, making it easy to find.
Parking
✔ Roadside Parking: Approximately 10 spots along the road above the valley
✔ Guesthouse Parking:
Available if you utilize the facilities at Gwangak Minbak or Yeongsimi-ne Pyeongsan (flat resting area)
✔ Public transportation is also an option
While there are now some roadside parking spaces, they are quite limited. If you don't arrive early on a weekend morning, you'll likely struggle to find a spot.
From the parking area to the valley, there's an unpaved downhill section. Be sure to move carefully to avoid slipping.
Since the roadside parking is very scarce if you're not staying at a guesthouse, arriving early is your safest bet.
Water Activities

✔ Diving Point: You can jump into the water from the rocks
As soon as you descend into the valley, you'll immediately think, "This looks like a great spot for diving!"
Centered around a large rock, there's a spot where the water reaches over 13 feet deep, making it perfect for diving off the rocks.
The water is incredibly clear, offering excellent visibility right to the bottom. I couldn't get an exact measurement of the depth because I was wearing a life vest.
This valley is deep enough that even an adult male cannot touch the bottom when diving, so it's a place where you need to exercise caution.
Another advantage of this spot is the natural shade provided by the surrounding trees, offering a welcome respite from the scorching sun.

💡 It's still relatively unknown, so it tends to be less crowded than other valleys in Gapyeong.

Safety personnel are always on-site and provide life vests for free. You'll just need to provide your name and phone number to borrow one!
Even if you bring a tube, you won't be allowed into the water without wearing a life vest.

This is a place where not only cooking but even eating is prohibited, so if you bring food, you won't be able to consume it in the valley itself.
It's best to plan your meals before you arrive or after you leave.
Restrooms are conveniently located near the parking area, though be aware they might not be the cleanest.
While eating is prohibited at Mudangso Recreational Area, the excellent diving spots and crystal-clear waters more than make up for any inconvenience.
Head out early in the morning to secure a parking spot, grab your free life vest, and jump right in for a perfect day trip to a Gapyeong valley.

At Mudang Soyuwonji, approximately 10 cars can park on the shoulder of the road above the valley. Additionally, if you use Gwangak Minbak or Yeongsimi-ne Pyeongsan, you can use their respective guesthouses' parking lots. Since roadside parking is very limited, it is recommended to visit early in the morning on weekends.
Mudang Soyuwonji has deep points around the rocks with a maximum depth of over 4 meters. Here, you can enjoy swimming by diving from the rocks; it's deep enough that an adult male won't touch the bottom.
Yes, wearing a life jacket is mandatory when swimming at Mudang Soyuwonji. You can rent a life jacket for free by writing your name and phone number to the safety personnel stationed on-site.
Eating and cooking are both prohibited at Mudang Soyuwonji. Therefore, even if you bring food, you cannot eat it within the valley. It is advisable to have your meals before visiting or after returning home.
