If a friend planning a trip to Bali

asked me to recommend just one must-do experience,

I wouldn't hesitate for a second to say the Mount Batur Sunrise Tour.

To be completely honest, before I went,

knowing I had to wake up in the middle of the night

for a pretty physically demanding itinerary,

I was a bit skeptical about whether I’d actually enjoy it.

But now that I’m back,

I can confidently say it was worth every single ounce of lost sleep.

Even though the landscape was unfolding right before my eyes,

it looked so surreal, like a photograph,

presenting views that were completely out of this world.

The photos and videos turned out so incredibly well

that it almost looked like I photoshopped myself in! Haha.

Based on my personal experience,

I've put together everything you need to know, from outfits and essentials

to the schedule and my honest review of the guide.

1. Booking Your Bali Jeep Tour

There are so many operators offering Mount Batur Jeep tours,

so I had a hard time deciding which one to book.

Since I wanted to make sure communication was absolutely flawless,

I specifically compared agencies that provided Korean-speaking guides,

focusing on itineraries that included both

the Black Lava fields and Akasa Cafe.

When looking through photo reviews,

it seemed like almost all the guides were pretty amazing photographers.

Booking Details

So in the end,

I went with the most budget-friendly option at the time.

Klook was the cheapest when I booked,

and it's still the most affordable option right now.

And the price actually got even lower... ^^

I personally booked it for ~$107 for 2 people... haha.

2. Mount Batur Sunrise Tour Review

Quick Itinerary Overview

*Based on actual times from my trip

Waking up at 2:30 AM.

I never thought I’d be waking up at this hour while on vacation... ^^...

Pick-up times vary slightly depending on your hotel's location,

but they sent me the exact time via KakaoTalk the day before,

so I could prepare without any stress.

I hopped into the car half-asleep,

and my first surprise was how

incredibly well the driver spoke Korean!

Since I was traveling with my sibling late at night,

I was worried about communication issues and decided to book a Korean-speaking guide,

and it turned out to be the absolute best decision.

I felt zero anxiety! Haha.

After about a two-hour drive,

we transferred to our 4x4 jeep.

We had a separate driver for the jeep

who didn't speak Korean,

but since our Korean-speaking guide stayed with us the entire time,

we didn't experience any inconvenience at all.

And so, our Bali jeep tour finally begins!

Are we seriously going up this steep hill?!

But the jeep charges right up without hesitation.

The ride... is literally an adventure in itself! Haha :)

It definitely woke me right up.

Once we reached the summit,

each driver parked in their designated spot,

and the ultimate photoshoot began!

As the sky shifted colors bit by bit,

our guide kept snapping photos of us—

to the point where we finally got tired and had to ask them to stop, lol.

Just before sunrise,

lying back and gazing up at the star-studded sky was absolutely magical.

They handed us a sandwich included in the tour,

and I was honestly surprised by how tasty it was, despite its simple look! haha

With the long line of colorful jeeps parked ahead of us,

the entire scene felt incredibly romantic and cinematic.

For about two hours,

we snapped photos and soaked in the view,

and then, the sun finally broke through the horizon.

Easily the most memorable sunrise

of my entire life.

In that moment, I realized, 'Ah, this is why I woke up at 2 AM,'

and all the exhaustion instantly melted away.

Our guide was an absolute pro behind the lens;

not only did they take amazing portraits,

but they also shot cinematic videos for us.

If capturing great photos is a priority for you, you will love this tour.

After soaking in the sunrise,

we headed over to the Black Lava fields.

It's not a place where you hang out for long,

but the backdrop of Mount Batur

is so stunning that you absolutely must stop by!

Even looking at it with my own eyes,

I couldn't tell if it was real life or CGI.

When I posted it on my Instagram stories, everyone flooded my DMs asking where this was!

Even if you're a bit tired,

I highly recommend getting off to take some photos here.

Since you've already put in the effort to wake up early,

pour your entire soul into the photoshoot—you won't regret it! haha

After exploring the Black Lava fields,

we made our way to Akasa Cafe.

As the most famous cafe in the area,

it was packed, and they even had parking attendants managing the crowd.

While our driver waited outside,

we took our time exploring the cafe.

To be honest, the pastries and drinks were pretty average,

but the view alone was absolutely spectacular.

It was the perfect final stop for our tour.

The prices for the drinks and pastries were also quite reasonable considering the epic view.

We paid around ~$8 for two drinks and a croissant.

However, because we arrived on the later side,

only the seats in direct sunlight were left,

so we couldn't stay for too long.

Then again, we didn't really have the stamina to stay much longer anyway... haha.

Still, we fully soaked in the view,

took a short break, and headed back to our resort.

It was a tiring day starting in the wee hours of the morning,

but even if I visit Bali again,

I would absolutely book this tour all over again.

3. Outfit, Checklist, and Tips for Booking Guides

✅ What should I wear?

​

Since you'll be heading up Mount Batur in the early morning,

it gets surprisingly chilly.

I wore shorts and a hoodie,

which was absolutely perfect for me since I tend to feel the cold easily.

However, it warms up quickly once the sun rises and you head back down,

so I highly recommend layering with a short-sleeve shirt underneath.

To be honest, I wore a tube top

under my hoodie just to take pretty pictures,

but it was so freezing while waiting for the sunrise

that I couldn't take my hoodie off even once! 😂

While getting beautiful photos is great,

catching a cold will ruin your entire trip.

I highly recommend dressing warmly.

✅ Highly Recommend Renting a Blanket

You can rent blankets right at the spot,

and we rented ours for about ~$3.

Honestly, I was a bit worried they might not be clean,

but they smelled so good and were in pristine condition, so I was super satisfied!

Since the wait for the sunrise is quite long,

if you get cold easily, having just one blanket

will make the wait so much more comfortable.

✅ Bring a Little Bit of Cash

Up at the observation point, there's a restroom and a place selling coffee,

but both only accepted cash.

We bought a hot cup of coffee,

and maybe because we were drinking it in the chilly dawn air,

it tasted so much better than usual.

You don't need a lot of money,

but I highly recommend keeping some small cash on hand.

One of the highlights of this tour for me

was our Korean-speaking guide.

They took such good care of us from start to finish,

and shared fascinating stories about Balinese culture and travel tips during the drive,

so the ride wasn't boring at all.

Most of all, realizing we were exhausted,

on the way back, they thoughtfully let us sleep peacefully

and were so incredibly considerate.

That kind of thoughtful detail made a huge difference.

They didn't try to force small talk

or awkwardly hype up the mood, which

actually made the ride so much more comfortable.

✅ You Can Definitely Get Excited About the Photos

Our jeep driver didn't speak Korean, but

when it came to photos, he was an absolute pro.

Even though we communicated with gestures and body language,

he knew exactly how to capture the best angles.

He helped us pose naturally

and passionately took amazing videos for us, too!

When you see the quality of the photos,

you'll immediately understand why everyone posts

their jeep tour photos on social media.

Thanks to him, I captured some of my absolute favorite

shots from my entire Bali trip on this day.

There are so many great photos

that I'm still trying to pick my favorites haha.

Because the itinerary starts at dawn,

I hesitated a little before going, but

now that I've actually done it,

I completely understand why this is a must-do

experience in Bali.

As long as you dress properly

and book a Korean-speaking guide,

even first-timers can fully enjoy the experience.
