1. Exploring Montserrat
Our group gathered at the meeting point at 8 AM and boarded a spacious bus. Many companies offer Montserrat tours, and honestly, I didn't find significant differences between them. The prices were quite similar too, so I simply booked a tour that fit my schedule.
Road to Montserrat
Before reaching the Montserrat Monastery itself, we had the chance to admire several other sights. There were options like a train and a cable car to get around.
Near Montserrat Monastery
The monastery complex is incredibly vast, featuring various sculptures outside and even a museum to explore.
Montserrat Monastery
Initially, I just thought of Montserrat as a monastery perched high up, but it's more like a large village nestled within the mountains. Upon arrival, I even got to browse a charming small market.

2. Montserrat Monastery and the Black Madonna
Beyond the tour fee, there was a separate entrance fee of 11 Euros to access the Montserrat Monastery and see the Black Madonna. This monastery gained its fame largely due to this revered Black Madonna statue. Legend has it that at the end of the 9th century, shepherd boys discovered the statue in a cave on Montserrat Mountain, guided by light and music. It was initially hidden in the cave and later enshrined when the monastery was built.

Inside, there were numerous places for prayer. The Madonna holds a spherical orb in her right hand, symbolizing the universe, and pilgrims believe that by touching this orb and making a wish, their desires will come true. This is why a long line of people eagerly awaited their turn.

I also joined the queue and reverently touched the orb held by the Black Madonna. I'm still hoping the wish I made that day comes true!
Montserrat Hanbok Statue
Another unique reason Montserrat is well-known, especially among Korean visitors, is a small statue dressed in a traditional Korean Hanbok. This tiny, yet significant, statue was donated by the Korean Catholic Foundation to commemorate the 200th anniversary of St. Andrew Kim Taegon's birth. Having a statue adorned in Korean culture within a Spanish pilgrimage site holds deep symbolic meaning for Korean pilgrims.
Montserrat Monastery
After exiting the monastery, we were given free time to explore Montserrat. There are several walking routes available. I actually ventured out on two different paths: one was a relatively easy stroll, and the other was a bit more challenging and ventured further.
Montserrat
Montserrat Mountain felt like a sacred place in itself. Even while hiking, I encountered crosses and other holy sites along the trails.
Montserrat Mountain Cross
The easiest route I took wasn't strenuous at all and didn't take much time.

Our tour also provided coupons, which I used to try some delicious local bread and honey at Montserrat. They were incredibly tasty, and I highly recommend you try them if you visit!
3. Montserrat Tour Free Time Exploration
We had about two hours of free time. After completing the shortest hiking path, about an hour had passed. I then explored the market, bought some honey, and still had a bit of time left, so I decided to tackle the next, longer route.
Montserrat
The path for the second route was considerably more challenging. It became clear why fewer people ventured there; the trail itself was tough, and it took a good amount of time to complete.
Montserrat
Despite the difficulty, I pressed on because I heard there was another statue of the Virgin Mary, a counterpart to the famous Black Madonna, located along this route.
Another Chapel at Montserrat
Inside, the chapel was empty and much smaller, yet it exuded an even more profound sense of reverence. I sat there for a long while, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere before heading back.
Montserrat
Looking back from the monastery, I wondered how I managed to traverse such a distance. While I don't regret taking the longer path, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to everyone.
Overall, I found taking a tour to Montserrat made the journey much easier, and the free time allotted was perfectly balanced. If you're visiting Barcelona, I wholeheartedly recommend experiencing a Montserrat tour.
