✔️ Find coordinating transport difficult or want to visit other cities? Choose a guided tour.
Montserrat Independent Travel VS. Guided Tour: Which is Right for You?

There are two main ways to get to Montserrat: a guided tour or independent travel. Each option has distinct pros and cons!
Independent Travel | Guided Tour
How to Go | Train + Funicular/Cable Car | Private Vehicle |
Travel Time | Approx. 2-3 hours round trip | Approx. 2 hours round trip |
Cost | 28.8 EUR (integrated train + funicular/cable car ticket) (~$34) | ~$56 - ~$66 |
Pros | Flexible itinerary Cost-effective | Convenient transport, saves time All-in-one booking, no separate reservations Enhanced experience with guide's explanations Option to visit other cities/attractions |
Cons | Requires careful planning of train/funicular/monastery schedules Transfers and ticket purchases can be challenging for first-timers Lack of guide explanations may make sightseeing less informative | Higher cost than independent travel Fixed itinerary, less flexibility |
Recommended For | Budget-conscious travelers Those who prefer flexible travel | Travelers who want to visit other cities or maximize their time efficiently Family trips |
While I usually prefer independent travel and went that route, I found there was so much to coordinate that I would actually recommend a guided tour for Montserrat!
There are various types of Montserrat tours available
(Click on the tour name for more details)
Tour Type | Itinerary | Price |
Morning Montserrat Afternoon transfer to airport (arrives 4:00 PM) | ~$48
Morning Montserrat Afternoon Sitges (coastal town) | ~$56
Morning Montserrat Afternoon Girona (medieval city) | ~$70
Transport only, no guide | ~$37 - ~$53 |
The Montserrat & Sitges tour, Montserrat & Girona tour, and Montserrat Half-Day tour are generally the most reviewed, in that order.
The transport-only tour is a newer option. Considering that the integrated bus & funicular ticket is 28.8 EUR (approximately ~$34), and the Montserrat Sitges bus fare alone is about ~$41, it makes sense to pay just a few dollars more to comfortably visit two places at once!

How to Get to Montserrat by Train

For independent travelers heading to Montserrat, the most common method is taking the train combined with either the funicular or cable car to ascend the mountain.
Departure Station | Arrival Station | Travel Time |
Take the R5 train from Pl. Espanya | Alight at Monistrol‑de‑Montserrat Station | Approx. 50 minutes to 1 hour |
Once you arrive at the train station, there are two ways to reach the monastery at the top of the mountain:
1. Cable Car (Aeri de Montserrat)
Can have longer wait times due to smaller capacity.
Offers breathtaking, expansive views as you ascend.
2. Funicular (Rack Railway)
Larger capacity, generally less waiting time.
Comfortable seating for a relaxed journey.
While not as open as the cable car, the views from the window are still incredibly beautiful.
I personally chose the funicular for a more comfortable ride!
Montserrat Monastery Highlights

Montserrat Monastery is a spiritual sanctuary nestled in the mountains, about an hour from Barcelona. It's renowned for its Black Madonna statue and the Escolania de Montserrat boys' choir.
The dramatic landscape of jagged rock formations surrounding the monastery makes it a worthwhile destination, even for those without religious affiliations.

There are very few monasteries in Europe built into such unique rock formations, which is why it attracts visitors from all over the continent.
Final Thoughts

Montserrat is a truly valuable destination, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and a serene atmosphere that's hard to find in the bustling city.

The distinctive jagged rock formations and the monastery perched among them create a landscape found nowhere else. If you're visiting Barcelona, I wholeheartedly recommend a trip to Montserrat!
