On my last trip to Tokyo,
I checked out Moheji, a spot famous with tourists.
But this time, I was craving a monjayaki restaurant
that truly felt like a local gem.
After a bit of searching, I discovered
Monja Tecchan,
conveniently located in Asakusa.
This spot even made an appearance on "The Solitary Gourmet,"
so I was definitely keen to visit.
And honestly, I found it more affordable and tastier
than Moheji!
(Though the fact that smoking is allowed inside could be a drawback for some.)
Today, I'm excited to share all about Monja Tecchan,
a fantastic monjayaki spot in Tokyo! I'll cover its location, opening hours, menu,
and, of course, my honest review.

While it's about a 10-minute walk from Asakusa and Tawaramachi Stations,
Sensoji Temple is right next door,
making it a perfect stop before or after your temple visit.
I actually visited Monja Tecchan
after an evening stroll around Sensoji Temple.
Menu & How to Order
There were a total of 10 different types of monjayaki
to choose from!
My boyfriend and I visited as a pair,
and we ordered two kinds: the Mentaiko Mochi Cheese Monja and the Tecchan Special Monja.
If you're not super hungry, one might be enough,
but I hadn't eaten dinner yet, so I ordered two!
At Moheji, ordering one item per person is mandatory,
but I was happy to find that's not the case here!
Beyond monjayaki,
they also offered okonomiyaki dishes.
The drink menu was also quite extensive,
featuring everything from Chuhai and sours to plum wine and beyond.
Oh, and you can even order Hoppy,
a drink that was featured on Choo Sung-hoon's YouTube channel!

Restaurant Atmosphere
We visited around 8:30 PM on a weekday,
and it was completely full, with only one table remaining!
The interior is quite cozy and intimate,
and since there aren't many tables, it seems to fill up quickly.
Since smoking is permitted inside the restaurant,
please keep this in mind before your visit!
The interior vibe took us straight back to the 80s and 90s,
with that perfectly retro Japanese ambiance.
It’s a spot famous for being featured on 'The Solitary Gourmet' and known as a local favorite,
so no wonder the walls were filled with celebrity signatures! Haha.
And get this – every single customer there, besides us,
was a local Japanese!
Monjayaki Review
We snagged a spot against the wall,
perfect for four people with two on each side.
For our order, we went with the Tejjang Special Monja (1,600 yen)
and the Mentaiko Mochi Cheese Monja (1,400 yen).
Mentaiko, by the way, is spicy pollock roe.
Both dishes
came out in less than 5 minutes!
Even though it might look like a lot,
once we started eating, it was perfectly sized for one person.
So, if you want to eat until you're truly full,
I recommend one dish per person!
The cooking instructions
were clearly laid out with photos and explanations,
so if you're keen to try making it yourself, you can follow along.
We initially thought they would cook our monjayaki for us,
but it seemed they were too busy, so we had to do it ourselves. T_T
(They usually cook it for you!)
So, we decided to give it a try ourselves,
and it was actually much easier than we expected!
Just like the photo instructions,
first, stir-fry the solid ingredients.
Once they’re somewhat cooked, form a circular 'dam' with them,
then pour in the remaining liquid.
The important thing here is not to flip it like a Korean jeon (pancake);
you need to let it cook as is.
The staff continually adjusts the heat
to make sure it doesn't burn.
I've always had monjayaki cooked for me before,
but doing it ourselves really doubled the flavor and fun! Haha.
The Special Monja was the first one we finished,
and even though the appearance might be unique,
the combination of savory and nutty flavors made it
the perfect companion for beer... seriously!
The Special comes with a generous amount of seafood and meat,
including pork, shrimp, squid, and mussels,
and the portion was truly substantial.
This is the Mentaiko Mochi Monjayaki.
While the Special was delicious,
I actually found this one even tastier because of its chewy texture.
Seriously a highly recommended dish!
If you ever visit Tokyo, make sure to try this Hoppy as well.
They add a touch of shochu to the beer glass,
giving it a light 'somaek' (soju + beer) flavor,
which pairs absolutely perfectly with monjayaki!
Tucked away in Asakusa,
you'll find the delicious Monjayaki spot, Monja Tetchan.
My boyfriend actually tried Monjayaki for the very first time here,
and he absolutely loved it!
And when it came to the bill,
for two of us, we ordered two Monjayaki dishes and around three drinks,
the total came out to roughly ~$35.
Compared to some other Monjayaki spots,
the prices here felt pretty reasonable and not at all burdensome.
If you're on the hunt for an authentic Monjayaki experience loved by Tokyo locals,
I highly recommend Tetchan Monja! :)
Monja Tecchan is located a 10-minute walk from Tawaramachi Station and an 11-minute walk from Asakusa Station. Senso-ji Temple is just a 3-minute walk away, making it a great place to visit before or after your meal.
Monja Tecchan is open daily from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Last order for food is at 9:00 PM, and last order for drinks is at 9:30 PM.
Monja Tecchan offers 10 types of Monjayaki, including the Mentai Mochi Cheese Monja (~$9) and Tecchan Special Monja (~$10). The Mentai Mochi Cheese Monja is particularly recommended for its chewy texture. Orders can be placed via QR code.
Monja Tecchan is a local favorite featured on 'Kodoku no Gurume' (The Solitary Gourmet), and indoor smoking is permitted. If it's busy, you might need to cook your own Monjayaki. You can refer to the instructional photos: first stir-fry the ingredients, then form a "dam" (ring), and finally pour in the liquid broth to cook.
