Prepare for your September 2026 Mongolian adventure! This guide covers essential packing for comfort, hygiene, and staying warm amidst the vast landscapes and unpredictable weather.
September Mongolia Travel Essentials

Hello, I'm D-Young.
Are you planning a trip to Mongolia this September?
Mongolian adventures often involve long travel times and quite a few essentials to pack,
so I'm here to share what I prepared for a fun September trip,
based on my own experiences.
📝 September Mongolia Packing List
: Travel Must-Haves, Hygiene Products, What to Wear, Cold Weather Gear
September Weather in Mongolia
Mongolia is known for its characteristically very cold and long winters.
With seven months of winter, from October to April, it gets incredibly chilly,
while June, July, and August offer the best weather and are ideal for travel.
They say that May and September often have large temperature swings between day and night.
September in Mongolia, in particular, experiences significant temperature differences, with lows around 1.5°C and highs around 14.4°C.
That's why it's a good idea to pack your September Mongolia travel essentials accordingly.
1. Travel Must-Haves
· Donut Cushion & Neck Pillow, Emergency Medicine, etc.
These are the absolute must-haves for a Mongolia trip – things you simply can't travel without!
I've excluded very basic items like power banks.
Donut Cushion & Neck Pillow

In Mongolia, you'll spend a lot of time traveling by car – often 4 hours as a basic, and sometimes even over 9 hours!
While you'll definitely want to pack a cushion,
a donut-shaped foam cushion is said to be much more comfortable and breathable than a regular one.
Since it's not something I usually use, I bought it affordably on AliExpress.
Many people bring a neck pillow for other international trips, but it's especially crucial in Mongolia due to the long car journeys.
I wanted something for future travels too, so I purchased a S.GUARD neck pillow, which is quite well-known.
Emergency Medicine - Motion Sickness Pills, Digestive Aids, Cold Medicine, etc.
Given the extensive time spent traveling by car, motion sickness pills are an absolute must.
While I always pack a basic first-aid kit for any trip, I figured it might be difficult to find medicine in Mongolia,
so I made sure to pack digestive aids, cold medicine, and other essentials, along with my usual vitamins and supplements.
2. Hygiene Products
· Disposable Towels, Portable Bidet Wipes, Disinfectant Wipes, etc.
Disposable Towels

While gers sometimes provide towels, people often say they can smell or feel unclean, leaving you feeling a bit uneasy.
So, I bought disposable towels, thinking they'd be convenient to use once and then easily discard.
Portable Bidet Wipes, Disinfectant Wipes

I wasn't sure if they were absolutely necessary, but I packed portable bidet wipes and disinfectant wipes anyway, just in case I'd regret not having them.
Daiso offers them in convenient travel sizes, making them easy to bring along.
Shower Filter

After reading that shower facilities aren't always the cleanest, I ordered a shower filter.
I heard that sometimes you might not be able to shower, or the showerheads might not allow for filter replacement,
but after seeing photos of Mongolian shower filters turning completely black after just one use, I simply couldn't *not* buy one!
It seems like a smart idea to just bring a simple travel-sized one.
Other Essentials
Portable Tissues, Dry Shampoo, Cleansing Wipes, Fabric Freshener, Gloves, etc.

Water can be scarce in Mongolia, making it sometimes difficult to wash, so I packed dry shampoo and cleansing wipes.
I also heard that riding camels can leave you feeling quite smelly and a bit sticky, so
I even packed gloves, fabric freshener, more gloves, and even beauty tissues!
3. What to Wear in September
· Cold Weather Gear, Functional Essentials, Fashion Must-Haves

Mongolia's weather in September is all about those big temperature swings – chilly mornings and evenings, but warm to hot during the day.
At night, it can get even colder than autumn in Korea, so you'll definitely want to pay extra attention to packing your cold weather gear!
Cold Weather Gear
Lightweight Padded Jacket, Windbreaker
At night, temperatures can drop to near 0 degrees Celsius, making a padded jacket absolutely essential!
I've heard so many stories about how cold it gets even during July and August trips when you're sleeping, so I'm really wondering how chilly September will be!
(I even saw posts suggesting bringing a mini electric blanket – talk about preparedness!),
On the flip side, for those warmer daytime hours, you'll want to dress lightly but also pack a light jacket like a windbreaker to shield you from the sun.
A light jacket will be incredibly useful!

Functional Essentials
Hat, Sunglasses, Slippers
Mongolia boasts incredible open natural landscapes like expansive deserts and grasslands, which means the sunlight during the day can be incredibly intense!
That's why it's a great idea to pack a hat with a chin strap and sunglasses to block out those rays.
(Plus, they're super useful for photos too! 😎)
And for those long car rides or when you're moving around inside a ger,
slippers are an absolute must-have – they'll be incredibly useful instead of shoes.
I'd recommend slippers you can comfortably wear with socks, rather than flip-flops.

Fashion Must-Haves
Check Shirt, Cowboy Hat, Vibrant Colored Clothes
When you're exploring Mongolia, photos are absolutely non-negotiable, aren't they?!
With those breathtaking vast grasslands as your backdrop, you'll want to capture some truly amazing shots, which means I've been doing a lot of thinking about Mongolia-inspired fashion.
For backdrops like Mongolia's deserts and grasslands, clothes with vibrant, distinct colors really pop in photos!
I highly recommend items like red, brown, and, of course, a classic check shirt!
And a clever trick is to use a cowboy hat and sunglasses to stylishly hide any signs of a tired face. ;)
Writing this actually makes me think of Woody from Toy Story! 🤠🐎
4. Other Essentials
· Korean Food, Tumbler, Bluetooth Speaker, Wired Earphones, Hangers, and More
Korean Food Fix

Another thing that tends to be a common concern for Mongolia trips? The food!
Traditional Mongolian dishes like Khorkhog and lamb, often provided by tour agencies, might not always suit everyone's palate,
and the flavors or aromas can sometimes be quite strong. That's why many travelers choose to bring their own Korean food.
I'm planning to pack things like canned tuna and various sauces from Korea, while I'll pick up cup noodles and other quick fixes at a Mongolian supermarket.
Also, at E-Mart, they have this amazing instant rice that you can eat just by adding water – no heating required!
Since heating water might be tricky on the go, bringing some of these along would be a brilliant idea.
Tumbler and Straw

In Mongolia, it's apparently quite challenging to find ice,
so if you do manage to get some at a cafe or similar spot, it's a great idea to keep it in a tumbler to make it last as long as possible!
They also say it's smart to pack a straw for drinking water in a bumpy car.
(Thanks to that tip, a straw cleaning brush has been added to my packing list too!)
More Essentials
Wired Earphones, Bluetooth Speaker, Hangers, Mosquito Net, Camping Chair, etc.

Beyond all that, to keep your AirPods from running out of juice or tumbling into the depths of the car, don't forget
wired earphones, a Bluetooth speaker, hangers, and a camping chair or mat for incredible stargazing. There are just so many little things that come in handy!
It honestly feels like I'm packing my entire home sometimes! 😌
So far, we've explored the essentials for a September trip to Mongolia,
and given Mongolia's unique nature, it's definitely a bit more of an adventure! I think I've researched and prepared for this trip more than any other international journey I've taken!
To be continued 🐎🐫
