How to Buy Train Tickets at Mestre Station

When you enter Mestre Station, you'll see two types of ticket machines.
Make sure you use the Trenitalia machines (the red and white ones), not Italo.

To make things easier, tap the British flag icon
at the bottom of the screen to change the language to English.

Select 'VENEZIA S. LUCIA' as your destination. This is the main island station.
✔️ Quick Tip ✔️
Trains run roughly every 10 minutes, so there's no need to rush!

The timetable will pop up. Because these regional trains to the main island
are so frequent and feature open seating with plenty of space,
there is absolutely no need to buy your tickets online days in advance.
Just buy them right before you ride. Pre-buying ties you down to a
specific schedule, which takes the fun out of a relaxing morning!

Select your desired departure time and
press 'Forward' to proceed to the next screen.

At the payment stage, you can use either cash or a credit card.
I used my travel credit card and it was completely seamless.

Your ticket from Mestre to Venice Santa Lucia
will print out, and you're good to go!
Buying a train ticket in Italy is much easier than it seems.

The ticket features a handy QR code, meaning you no longer have to stamp it
in those old validation machines before boarding. Your boarding time and train number are clearly printed.
Finding Your Platform & Boarding

Look for your train number (e.g., Regionale 3882) and departure time
on the large digital departure boards to find your platform number.
Mine was departing from Platform 3, so I just followed the signs.
Keep an eye out for the yellow signs pointing the way!

Heading down the stairs toward Platform 3.

My train arrived right on time with zero delays.
These regional trains don't stop for very long, so I highly recommend waiting on the platform a few minutes early!

The trains are double-deckers!
Because it's open seating, you can sit wherever you'd like.
There was plenty of room, so we found comfortable seats right away.

Pro tip: If you sit on the left side of the train (facing the direction of travel),
you get a much better view of the lagoon as you cross into Venice! Unfortunately, those seats were already taken. Haha.
My son and I settled for a window seat on the right side instead.
Continuing Your Journey: Vaporetto Water Buses

You'll arrive at Venice Santa Lucia in a flash.
From here, the best way to get around the canals is by taking a Vaporetto (water bus).

While you certainly *can* walk to many hotels,
if you have kids, heavy luggage, or just want to save time, the Vaporetto is a lifesaver.
If you try to skip the water buses and walk everywhere,
the sheer amount of stairs and bridges will exhaust you quickly.
✔️ Essential if you plan to visit the outer islands like Murano or Burano!
✔️ Also works for buses on Lido Island (home of the Venice Film Festival)!
✔️ Includes standard buses running between Mestre and the main island!

Your Vaporetto pass even covers the mainland buses heading back to Mestre,
which was incredibly convenient when we returned late at night.
You can buy passes at the ticket booths, but if you want to avoid long lines
or language barriers, I highly recommend buying them in advance!
