During our Southern Italy road trip, we visited one of the most unique and mystical places,
Matera, famous for its ancient cave dwellings.

However, August in Matera is truly hotter than you can imagine.
The scorching heat can be so intense that tours are often canceled in the midday sun,
so if you're planning an August visit, be prepared.
Personally, I wouldn't recommend it in summer –
it was so exhausting it even made our next travel leg tougher.
Today, I'll share essential tips for visiting Matera in August,
our experience of a wasted trip to a planned parking lot,
and a detailed guide to the convenient alternative we found, including parking fees and warnings.

1. August Matera Weather & Travel Tips: Ice Water is a Must!

Matera's landscape of limestone rock hills offers very little shade,
making the summer heat feel incredibly intense.
In August, the heat was so severe that scheduled tours were canceled on the day of.
✅Essential Packing
Absolutely bring ice water, a hat, an umbrella or parasol, sunglasses,
and a portable fan.
✅Sightseeing Tips
Matera boasts various attractions like the Sassi cave dwellings and rock churches,
but constantly climbing stairs and hills under the scorching sun
can be genuinely dangerous due to heat exhaustion.
✅Recommended Itinerary
Given the hot weather, don't try to see every single area.
Instead, take a leisurely stroll through the city center,
then focus on visiting the massive underground cistern, Palombaro Lungo,
which is much cooler underground. This route is highly recommended.
We found the cave dwellings surprisingly small and the entrance fee a bit steep, which was a little disappointing.
2. Must-Check Before Parking: Parking Sant'Isidoro is for 'Pre-Booked Vehicles Only'!
When driving to Matera, many travelers look for Parking Sant'Isidoro.

We also aimed for this as our first choice,
but upon arrival, we were informed that only pre-booked vehicles could enter,
so we couldn't park there.
Even if you see empty spots,
they won't let you in without a prior reservation.
So, if you haven't booked in advance,
save yourself a wasted trip and head straight to another parking lot.
3. Our Convenient Alternative Parking: Parcheggio Park Scotellaro
We quickly redirected to Parcheggio Park Scotellaro,
located right near the city center.

📍Parcheggio Park Scotellaro
Via Rocco Scotellaro, 75100 Matera MT, Italy
📍 Parcheggio park scotellaro
Via Rocco Scotellaro, 75100 Matera MT, Italy
✔️Operating Hours: 24 hours
✔️Parking Fee: ~$2 per hour
We paid ~$8 (for approximately 4 hours of stay).
✔️Location Satisfaction
It's incredibly close to Matera's city center
(Piazza Vittorio Veneto and the entrance to the Sassi district),
which greatly reduced our walking distance in the hot weather.
There are also some great restaurants nearby.
We had lunch at Margò Ristorante e Ravioleria,
which was close to the parking lot, elegant, and delicious.
📍 Margò Ristorante e Ravioleria
Via Lucana, 178, 75100 Matera MT, Italy
Parking as close to the city center as possible is always the best option.
4. ★CRITICAL WARNING: Exiting Incorrectly Leads Straight to a ZTL Camera!
This parking lot has one unique and potentially critical drawback:
the risk of accidentally entering a ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone)
upon exit.

A ZTL enforcement camera is installed
right near the parking lot exit.
If you take a wrong turn or blindly follow traffic when leaving,
you'll immediately enter the ZTL zone and receive a fine.
However, with cameras clearly visible at both the entrance and exit,
we were extremely cautious.
Looking at reviews, some people gave it 1 star because they missed this warning,
but if you're aware of ZTLs, you're unlikely to drive into a zone with a visible camera.

The parking lot itself had plenty of spaces and was very satisfactory.
When exiting, make sure to visually confirm road signs,
road markings, and the location of the ZTL surveillance camera.
Mentally rehearse your exit route from the road joining the parking lot,
and drive out slowly and calmly.
If you're careful about the ZTL route when exiting,
this parking lot is an excellent choice for Matera car travelers
in terms of location and value.

The price is
~$2 per hour
We paid ~$8
