Today, I’m excited to guide you through the easiest way to get from Malaga Airport directly into the city center.

1. Getting to the City from Malaga Airport

The most straightforward way to reach Malaga city center from the airport is by taking the Cercanías train, which acts as a regional commuter line. It’s super easy to find right from the airport terminal.

After you land and collect your luggage, just follow the signs for “SALIDA” (Exit). You'll likely be moving with the flow of most other passengers heading out.

As you walk quite a distance, you’ll eventually see signs similar to the one on the right in the photo, indicating various transport options like taxis and trains – all in this direction.

The train station isn't directly connected inside the airport terminal; you'll need to step outside. This surprised me a little, but the clear signage quickly put me at ease.

Keep walking a bit further!

You'll cross a pedestrian walkway, and when you spot the Renfe logo, you're on the right track! Cercanías trains are operated by Renfe, Spain's national railway company, and they cover short distances. You’ll find these regional lines not just in Malaga but also in major cities like Madrid and Barcelona.

A helpful tip: If you've traveled to Malaga on a high-speed AVE train, your onward Cercanías journey might be free! This applies if your AVE ticket includes a 'Combinado Cercanías' code.

Since I flew into Malaga, this wasn't applicable for my trip, but if you're arriving by long-distance train from places like Madrid, you can use this perk without extra cost.

Just remember, you can't just hop on. You'll need to use the machines pictured above to enter the code from your AVE ticket and get your free pass.

Similar to train or metro stations in Madrid and Barcelona, you’ll find automated ticket machines for purchasing your fare.

Malaga city center has two main train stops:
Maria Zambrano station and Malaga Centro Alameda station. Check your hotel’s location on a map to decide which station is closest for you. I purchased a ticket for Maria Zambrano station.

*Fun fact: The stations are pronounced 'Mah-REE-ah Thahm-BRAH-noh' and 'Mah-LAH-gah SEN-troh Ah-lah-MAY-dah'.

We arrived around the Spanish rush hour, so we had to wait in a rather long line to buy our tickets… It was incredibly busy! I definitely recommend avoiding peak times if you can.

Since I usually book train tickets online, this was my first time buying from a machine in person. It was a bit confusing, and seeing the long queue of local commuters didn’t help with the stress! While you can set the machine to English and follow the instructions, I still fumbled a bit. Phew!

You can also buy regional train tickets online in advance. If I’d known how much I’d struggle at the machine, I would have definitely bought them beforehand. If you prefer to avoid any potential hassle at the station, I highly recommend purchasing your tickets online.

For a regional train ticket, which typically costs around ~$2, a 5% discount won't make a huge difference. However, if you're searching for longer-distance routes, this could lead to significant savings, so it's a great time to book all your train travel together!

3. Taking the Regional Train from Malaga Airport

Taking the train here is pretty similar to riding the subway in Barcelona or Madrid.

Simply tap the ticket you received from the machine. It might look like you need to insert it, but a gentle tap will do the trick!

Wait on the platform heading in the ALAMEDA direction. ALAMEDA is the final stop on this line.

Maria Zambrano station is at the edge of the city center and conveniently located next to the main bus terminal. Malaga Centro Alameda station, as its name suggests, is closer to the heart of the city's main attractions.

While a hotel near Centro Alameda might be better for exploring Malaga itself, I chose Maria Zambrano because I planned to take buses to other cities, minimizing how far I’d have to drag my luggage.

If you see signs like this at the station, you're waiting in the correct direction.

As you can see, many people travel from Malaga's surrounding towns into the city center.

Honestly, standing with luggage wasn't the most comfortable experience. However, it's only about an 8-minute ride, so it was manageable. The train interiors are generally spacious and comfortable, but during rush hour, it can feel a bit cramped!

Upon arrival, I immediately looked for the elevator. Thankfully, there was one at one end of the platform, making it easy to move my heavy luggage.

To ascend from the platform to the street level, look for 'Floor 0'.

Exiting the station is just like entering – you tap your ticket to pass through.

Maria Zambrano station is a massive complex, integrated with a shopping mall! I wandered around for a while trying to figure out which exit to take, but eventually, I made my 'escape' outside. Don't worry, all paths lead out!

The regional train is likely the simplest method to get from Malaga Airport to the city center. Even though the train station is outside the airport terminal, it’s easy to find without much up-and-down navigation, and the ride to the city takes less than 10 minutes.
