Ultimate Guide to a Day Trip from Lyon to Lake Annecy 🚆
Hey there, adventurers!
While exploring Lyon, I boldly carved out a day to visit a truly special place,
a little gem nestled in the French Alps.
I'm excited to share my top tips for a day trip to Annecy,
to help you make the most of your adventure.
🔗France Travel Essentials: Discover eSIMs

On a good day, the lake's color transforms
from emerald to jade to sky blue – it's truly magical.
Unlike my previous posts which were simple travelogues,
this one is packed with insights I wish I'd known beforehand – the kind that make your trip so much smoother!
From transportation, checking for delays, and essential packing,
to all the fun ways to enjoy the lake (like cycling and boating) – I've got it all covered in one place!

Annecy
A charming town nestled in the heart of the French Alps, in Eastern France.
📍 Annecy
📍 Annecy
Annecy, France

Annecy is so close to Geneva, Switzerland,
it's earned the nickname 'Little Switzerland of France.'
Its most famous feature is Lake Annecy, fed by glacial waters.
The water's hue changes with the seasons and weather,
shifting between emerald, sky blue, and turquoise.

With its old town brimming with medieval charm,
canals lined with vibrant flowers,
and photo spots like the Pont des Amours (Bridge of Love),
just walking around feels like stepping into a postcard.
If you're planning a trip to a charming small town,
I highly recommend adding Annecy to your itinerary!
How to Get from Lyon to Annecy
I stayed in Lyon and took a day trip to Annecy.
Lyon and Annecy are approximately 2 hours apart by train.
* Lyon Accommodation Recommendation
The accommodation I stayed at was incredibly convenient,
as it was very close to the train station.
I'll link a great value-for-money option near the train station below.
🔗Accommodation 10 minutes from Part-Dieu Station
Mode of transportation: Train (TER)
Depart from Lyon Part-Dieu Station → Arrive at Annecy Station.

If you book your tickets in advance on the SNCF Connect app (or website),
you'll have a wider choice of times and more stable pricing.
Note that TER trains do not have assigned seats,
so you can simply board with your ticket.
While buses are an option, I highly recommend taking the train!
There are two main reasons: convenience (fewer stops along the way),
and the incredible views (the French countryside unfolding outside your window is truly art).
However… French trains are known for
frequent delays, so be sure to check out the tips below 👇
⚠️ How to Check for Train Delays

On my way back, I experienced a whopping
3-hour delay…
Seriously, sitting there with no information is incredibly frustrating! 😂
So, let me share what I learned.
1️⃣ SNCF Connect App/Web
Check current operating status in the Traffic Info section at the bottom of the app.
If you save your journey, you'll receive push notifications immediately
for delays and platform changes.
The 'Disruption' menu
also provides refund/exchange policies.
2️⃣ Official Regional TER Announcements
(TER Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes)
Look for 'Info Trafic' or 'Perturbations' sections on the website.
Delays/cancellations due to construction, strikes, weather, etc.,
are updated after 5 PM the day before.
You can also check here for alternative bus services and detour routes.
📌 Tip: By checking both the app and regional announcements,
you can quickly determine if it's a minor delay
or a prolonged stoppage!

👜 What to Pack (Day Trip Essentials)

✔️ Outerwear/Shirt → The wind on the train or by the lake can be
chilly, even in summer.
✔️ Power Bank 20,000mAh → A lifeline in case of delays…
Especially on French trains, many carriages don't have power outlets,
and delays can happen, so a power bank is truly essential.
✔️ Swimsuit + Beach Towel → Pack it even if the weather is cloudy,
the sun might suddenly pop out!
✔️ ID (Passport/ID Card) → When renting a boat or pedal boat,
they often require it as a deposit.
We also left our IDs to use them.
🛶 Enjoying the Lake ① Boat Ride

One of the highlights of Lake Annecy!
If you take a boat out to the middle of the lake and go for a swim,
that's where you'll get your 'life shot' (perfect photo) 💙

▷ Where to Rent?
While places like Le Deck de Veyrier
offer online reservations,
you can easily rent on-site,
so I don't really recommend booking online.
✅ Pedal Boat Prices (for 2 people)
30 minutes: €16
45 minutes: €19
1 hour: €22
We went when the sun suddenly came out,
and only used it for 30 minutes, but even a short ride
was definitely enough!
▷ Boat Rental Tips
ID essential (Passport/ID Card), held/verified on-site
Charged by time unit: 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours —
late returns incur extra fees
✔️ Depth: Even if you go to the middle of the lake,
it's not very deep, only about 130cm (approx. 4.3 ft), so
even if you're not a strong swimmer,
you'll still be able to swim comfortably!

🔴 Safety: Maintain a safe distance from boats while swimming.
🚲 Enjoying the Lake ② Cycling

The cycling route that goes around the lake is incredibly beautiful.
On a nice day, the combination of the shimmering water and mountain ranges is absolutely stunning.

▷ 1) Vélonecy 60 minutes (Public Electric Bikes)
App: Vélonecy 60 minutes (iOS/Android)
How to Rent: Scan QR code in the app → Start riding immediately
✔️ Fares: 0–30 minutes free → Next 30 minutes €1.50
→ Jumps sharply from 61 minutes onwards (€35)
I recommend riding for an hour or less.
▷ 2) Private Rental Shops (Half-day to Full-day)
Roul’ ma Poule: 1 hour €9 / Full-day €26
Vélo du Lac: City bike full-day €24,
Electric bike full-day €52
Takamaka: Wide variety of city, electric, and road bikes,
great accessibility near the Old Town
Tip: For half a day or more, private rentals are always more advantageous,
and you'll have a wider selection of sizes and types.
⏱ Recommended Day Trip Itinerary

08:00 Depart Lyon Part-Dieu (Train)
10:00 Arrive in Annecy → Stroll through the Old Town + Pont des Amours (Lover's Bridge)
12:00 Brunch/Lunch
13:00 Cycle (Half loop or full circuit)
15:30 Boat ride and swim in the lake
17:30 Café or Old Town shopping
19:30 Return to Lyon by train (Allow extra time for potential delays!)
💡 Key Takeaways
✅Transportation: Check schedules & book via SNCF Connect; for delays, double-check with the app + local TER announcements
✅Boats: ID is essential; renting by the hour is most efficient
✅Bikes: For less than an hour, use Vélonecy; for half a day or more, a private rental is recommended
✅Essentials: Power bank, swimsuit, and *definitely* an outer layer!

Annecy is a city whose charm completely transforms with the weather, so even if it rains, don't give up – just wait it out.
The moment the sun miraculously appears, just like it did for us, you'll feel like everything was worth it! 😍
And with that, I'll wrap up today's review!
