Uokeya U Kyoto Review 2026: 140-Year-Old Unagi Donburi
Experience the legendary 140-year-old Uokeya U in Kyoto, a Michelin-starred spot famous for its sublime unagi donburi. Find out how to secure your reservation!

Kyoto in November is an absolute dream, with the autumn foliage reaching its peak and painting the entire city in breathtaking hues of red and gold. It's no wonder that travelers flock here, making famous restaurants notorious for their long wait times.
Among these culinary treasures, one spot truly stood out, highly recommended by a local Japanese friend: Uokeya U, a Michelin-starred unagi (freshwater eel) restaurant with 140 years of tradition in Kyoto.
✔️ Just a 4-minute walk from Gion-Shijo Station
✔️ Excellent accessibility, right in the heart of Gion
✔️ Easy walking distance to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Ninenzaka, and Sannenzaka!
Operating Hours: Wednesday to Sunday
Lunch: 11:30 AM - 2:30 PM
Dinner: 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Given its popularity, walk-in visits are almost impossible. You'll definitely need to make a reservation in advance.

If you navigate to the reservation page linked on Google Maps, you'll find an additional reservation fee of ~$20 (3,000 JPY), separate from the food cost. I don't recommend this option.
Calling to reserve is free!
✔️ Phone reservations are only available in Japanese.
Alternatively, consider using a Japanese restaurant booking proxy service for assistance.
✔️ Reservations often fill up quickly, so if you're planning a trip to Kyoto in 2026, I highly recommend booking well in advance.

From the moment you approach, the exterior exudes that distinct charm of an old Kyoto-style establishment. When I visited, there was a sign advising guests not to queue outside the restaurant.

The first floor houses the kitchen, where the eel is grilled over charcoal, along with a few small tables.

Most reserved guests seemed to be escorted to the second floor, which featured about five tables and restrooms. We were also seated upstairs for our meal.
The subtle aroma of grilling eel wafted up from the first floor, building our anticipation even before we sat down. My stomach was already rumbling!

I had read some reviews mentioning unfriendly staff, so I was a little apprehensive, but during my visit, most of the employees were quite kind. However, instructions and communication were primarily in Japanese rather than English, so a bit of intuitive understanding was helpful.

While many locals frequent Uokeya U, it's also a popular spot for tourists, so the menu thoughtfully includes English descriptions, making ordering a breeze.
The signature dish at Uokeya U is, without a doubt, the Unadon (eel bowl). While there are various side dishes, we opted for the star of the show and ordered two medium-sized Unadon.

Our elegant meal arrived, featuring pickled vegetables, miso soup (which even had a bit of eel!), and, of course, the magnificent Unadon.

The eel's tenderness, glistening sheen, and delicate charcoal aroma created a perfect harmony. It wasn't overly greasy, and despite Japanese cuisine often being on the saltier side, the sauce was impeccably balanced—neither too salty nor too sweet. Absolutely delightful! 👍

Unlike the richer, oilier Japonica eel, this dish offered a sublime charcoal flavor without being heavy. It was truly a memorable meal in Kyoto.
While reservations can be tricky and the price point is higher, the exceptional quality and flavor make it entirely worthwhile.
