Discover the ultimate family getaway at Kyoto Umekoji Kadensho! Our honest review of this 4-star onsen ryokan highlights its prime location and traditional charm.
Hello, this is Roja :)
My husband, my younger brother, and I, the three of us,
went on a family trip to Osaka and Kyoto~!
Among our plans, what I was most looking forward to was
a ryokan stay!
When you travel to Japan, delicious food and shopping are great, but
I really wanted to spend at least a day soaking in a hot spring
and unwinding from all the travel fatigue haha.
After researching many accommodations, the place we finally chose was
Umekoji Kadensho!
To tell you the conclusion first…
If you're planning a Kyoto family trip, this was a truly satisfying
Kyoto hot spring accommodation >.<
Kyoto Umekoji Kadensho Review
4-star Ryokan Hotel
1. Accommodation Location, Information
📍 Kyoto Umekoji Kadensho
41-10 Sujakuuchihatachō, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto, 600-8843 Japan
-Sujakuuchihatacho 41-10, Shimogyo Ward, Japan
-Check-in 15:00 / Check-out 11:00
We planned to go to our accommodation after sightseeing at Kinkaku-ji,
so we decided on Umekoji Kadensho!
It only takes 30 minutes by city bus from Kinkaku-ji,
and after getting off at the bus stop,
you just need to cross one crosswalk to Umekoji Kadensho,
so it's really just about a 1-minute walk!
It's the next station after Kyoto Station,
and it's only a 2-minute walk from JR Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station,
making it highly recommended for travelers on foot like us!
2. Reasons for Choosing the Accommodation

Everyone does Osaka + Kyoto family trips
all at once, right!
The day before heading to Osaka,
we planned to stay one night in Kyoto,
Honestly, there are so many accommodations in Kyoto
that I spent a lot of time deliberating.
Location was certainly a factor,
but among my top priorities, these were the conditions I considered important:
- It should offer Kyoto's unique ambiance
- It should have excellent hot spring facilities
- It should be in a great location for sightseeing
- Clean rooms and good service
- It should provide beautiful yukatas
These were my criteria.
Umekoji Kadensho was a Kyoto ryokan accommodation that largely met
these conditions.
Umekoji Kadensho seemed to offer great value and facilities,
so I ended up booking it.
What's more, it had excellent reviews among those looking for a Kyoto hot spring accommodation,
so my expectations were really high.

The staff took our luggage up to our room,
and after taking off our shoes and entering,
we just queued up here for check-in.
Upon check-in, they give you both a shoe locker key and a room key.

like a jjimjilbang 🧖 haha
You find the shoe locker number matching the key from the lobby,
put your shoes in,
then take the elevator up to your room.

Before heading up, in the lobby,
we took a shot holding hands nicely (but a little awkwardly) haha.
All the floors are tatami,
so we mostly walked barefoot inside,
and it was really comfortable.
3. Room and Private Bath Experience Review

One of the reasons I chose this accommodation was the yukata..!
First, we picked up our yukatas on the 1st floor and came up.
Yukata colors and stock are limited,
so you have to go right after check-in to pick out
the one you want. Haha.
What my husband is wearing is the indoor lounge wear
provided in the room for each guest.
Since I love purple,
I picked a lovely purple yukata!
Isn't the yukata just gorgeous?

We booked a triple room with three beds
and one sofa.
I couldn't take detailed pictures of the room, but
The room was quite spacious,
enough for three of us to spread out our luggage comfortably,
and the central table was perfect for gathering
and enjoying convenience store snacks!
Plus, there were plenty of power outlets around the bed,
making it super easy to charge our phones.
Oh, and speaking of essentials for Japan trips,
you all know a "pig nose" multi-adapter is a must-have, right?!
If you forget to bring one, you won't be able to charge your phone
or use your hair straightener, leading to a disaster...
So make sure to prepare it in advance!

The city view was also incredibly beautiful,
so much so that I found my husband sitting by the window
taking photos as soon as he woke up in the morning, haha!

After changing into our yukata,
we grabbed the bath baskets provided in our room
and headed to the private onsen (chartered bath).
Before entering the private onsen, my sister and I
had a blast taking pictures in the hallway, LOL!

But above all, what I was most looking forward to was the private onsen hot spring!

As expected from Umekoji Kadensho, famous as a Kyoto onsen ryokan,
the hot spring facilities were truly satisfying.

Soaking in the warm water,
the fatigue from walking all day instantly melted away.
The more packed your travel schedule,
the more you appreciate the benefits of a Kyoto onsen ryokan like this.

There are a total of five private onsen baths,
and if a light is on, it means someone is inside.
So you need to wait in the hallway,
and enter once a bath becomes vacant.
Umekoji Kadensho's public spaces were also maintained
immaculately clean,
and the staff were friendly,
making our stay pleasant throughout.
When I visited, it was peak season, so it was a bit expensive,
but now there's a promotion going on with even more discounts.
Almost ~$69 difference, sob!
For those of you planning a trip to Kyoto,

4. Lounge & Breakfast

Between 6 PM and 7 PM, the lounge offers
dango, drinks, desserts, and more,
all free of charge!
You know you absolutely have to take advantage of free perks, right? Haha!

There were various seating options like sofas and tables,
so you could choose any spot you liked!
We chose a spot with a view of the outside scenery.
It was so funny to see all of us chatting
in our yukatas, we laughed a lot LOL!
The best part about our family trip to Kyoto!
We got to spend so much quality time together
that we might not have had in Korea ♡

After enjoying a bath in the private onsen in the evening,
the free soba, offered from **9:30 PM to 11:00 PM**!
Time to grab some!
It's served in a small restaurant right across from the private baths.
People sometimes line up during those hours.
In the same restaurant, during breakfast hours,
yogurt is free!
The next morning, we headed to the restaurant on the 2nd floor for breakfast.
The **breakfast buffet operates from 6:30 AM to 9:30 AM**, so
make sure to go during those times if you plan to eat!

See how full my tray is? Haha!
My eyes were just darting around at all the options!
I was a little worried since it was described as Japanese home-style cooking,
wondering if it might not suit my taste,
but it turned out to be such a new and delicious experience.
Not just me, but all my family members who traveled with me
enjoyed it immensely!

Since it's a buffet style,
you can try different dishes and then get more of the ones you like,
which was wonderful!
The breakfast price, if paid on-site,
is 3,000 JPY (approximately ~$19), but
it's cheaper if you book it with breakfast included when you make your accommodation reservation.
I definitely recommend booking it all at once! 😉
When traveling in Osaka and Kyoto,
a **Kyoto ryokan accommodation** where you can completely shake off your fatigue
that offers great value for money.
I highly recommend it! 😊
