Umekoji Kadensho Kyoto Ryokan Review 2026: Perfect for Families & Couples

When planning a trip to Kyoto, finding the perfect ryokan is usually at the top of everyone's list.

Today, I want to introduce you to a gem located just one stop away from Kyoto Station:

the Kyoto Ryokan Hotel Umekoji Kadensho.

With a spacious public bath and private rental hot springs, it's the perfect choice

if you're trying to decide where to stay during your Kyoto adventure!

As a relatively new ryokan hotel, the entrance felt incredibly clean and welcoming.

Even though it's located right in the heart of the city,

it perfectly captures the tranquil atmosphere of a traditional Japanese ryokan!

Check-in, Interior, and Room Facilities

The lobby is spacious and bright, designed with warm tones

that make you feel cozy and relaxed the moment you step inside.

Before stepping into the lobby, the entire floor is covered in traditional tatami mats,

so guests take off their shoes at the entrance.

Amenities & Conveniences

On the 1st floor, you can pick up hair ties and select a yukata to wear.

They have a wide range of yukata sizes from children to adults,

making it easy to find the perfect fit without any hassle.

The welcome drink station on the 1st floor features

traditional options like Japanese green tea, barley tea, plum hojicha, and brown rice tea,

as well as black tea and iced tea—giving you plenty of choices to enjoy.

They even offer coffee—iced, hot, caffe lattes, and matcha lattes—

so you won't even need to head out to a cafe.

While many hotels only operate two elevators,

Umekoji Kadensho has three. Thanks to this,

we never had to wait around during busy check-in and check-out times.

Twin Room Review

We booked a Twin Room,

which featured spacious, supportive mattresses that guaranteed a great night's rest.

Even though it's just one stop from Kyoto Station,

there was zero outside noise and excellent soundproofing between rooms.

As a light sleeper, I slept incredibly well here.

While standard pillows are provided in the room,

there is a dedicated pillow station in the hallway with various heights and types,

allowing you to choose the perfect one for your sleeping style.

Having a herniated disc in my neck, this was a lifesaver for me.

The toilet, vanity, and shower are all completely separated.

Since it's a newer property, everything was spotlessly clean with no mold or water stains.

I booked the Twin Room for around ~$224 per night,

but hotel rates can vary wildly

depending on the season and dates of your stay.

While the average price is usually around ~$192,

I've seen the same room drop to around ~$128 depending on the day.

Kaiseki Dinner

The Kaiseki dinner menu changes seasonally,

and you can customize the main course based on your preferences.

The pacing of each course was excellent,

allowing us to fully relax and enjoy the culinary experience.

The meal kicks off with some palate-cleansing finger foods,

which let us truly appreciate the natural flavors of each ingredient.

Even though the sashimi was aged, it was incredibly fresh with absolutely no fishy taste,

and while the grilled fish was a tiny bit dry, it was still quite tasty!

The portion size for the individual shabu-shabu was also just perfect.

Sometimes tempura can be served lukewarm at these places,

but here, it was served piping hot and absolutely delicious.

The miso-based beef dish was on the saltier side,

but the seasoning was so flavorful that I still thoroughly enjoyed every bite.

We wrapped things up with a warm, comforting bowl of ochazuke (rice in tea),

making the entire course feel beautifully balanced and light.

Dessert was a lovely combo of mochi and fresh fruit!

24-Hour Access to Private Outdoor Baths (Onsen)

There are 5 private baths in total,

and the very first one, "Sekiei" (Quartz), seemed to be the most popular.

For these private baths, if the light is on, it's occupied; if it's off,

you can head right in!

You get 45 minutes of use, and you can freely walk into

whichever bath you want as soon as it becomes vacant!

They can get pretty busy during the evening peak hours,

so if you want a more relaxing soak, try to avoid the rush!

Just a quick heads-up: the private baths are strictly for soaking,

and there are no washing stations inside. For shampooing or showering,

you'll need to do that separately back in your room, which was a tiny bit inconvenient.

They also have free massage chairs you can use while waiting for the public baths—

absolutely perfect if you're traveling with your parents!

Free Soba and Ice Cream

After your soak,

make sure to check out the free ice cream corner (open 15:00~24:00)—

it's a must-visit!

From 21:30 to 23:00,

the hotel serves complimentary late-night soba,

and you can either enjoy it right there in the dining area

or take it back to your room.

We paired ours with some snacks we picked up from the 7-Eleven right across the street—

the perfect late-night feast! :)

Breakfast

Breakfast is available from 6:30 to 9:30, and

Last entry is until 9:00 AM.

Once you enter, the staff will guide you to your seat,

and there is a great variety of options, from Japanese to Western dishes.

With so many choices, it was perfect for customizing our breakfast to our morning cravings!

A ryokan hotel that excels in location, cleanliness, and facilities

Super close to Kyoto Station, and the taxi fare was very reasonable

Although we stayed in a twin room for two,

they also have triple and quad rooms for three or four guests,

making it an excellent choice for family trips!

Blending the warm, cozy vibes of a traditional ryokan with modern amenities,

this is my absolute number one recommendation for a hot spring stay in Kyoto.
