You might wonder if it's worth visiting a Starbucks when you're all the way in Kyoto, but the Ninenzaka Starbucks is truly special.

Its interior, designed to evoke a traditional Japanese home, offers a unique Kyoto ambiance, making it a cafe worth visiting during your trip.

1. The Ninenzaka Starbucks

Located right at the foot of the stairs leading into Ninenzaka, you'll easily spot the Starbucks logo as you descend.

The Ninenzaka Starbucks is split into two levels: the first floor for ordering and the second floor for seating.

If you plan to enjoy your coffee inside, it's recommended to find a seat on the second floor before placing your order.

You'll find both traditional tatami seating areas and standard tables. The tatami rooms are arguably the most charming feature of this Kyoto Starbucks.

However, both tatami and table seats fill up quickly, so if you spot an empty spot, grab it immediately!

We even had to wait a bit to find a place 🥲

While waiting, I found myself gazing out the window at the end of the hallway, admiring the beautiful traditional Kyoto rooftops.

It felt like stepping into a serene Japanese countryside, making the wait surprisingly pleasant.

2. The Menu

The menu at Starbucks Japan is largely similar to what you'd find in other countries.

However, keep an eye out for seasonal limited-edition beverages that change throughout the year – they're always a fun surprise!

You'll also find a selection of light bites like sandwiches, cakes, bagels, and donuts.

Since most shops around Kyoto's Ninenzaka area open later, typically between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM, many early birds head to Starbucks for a quick breakfast and to start their day.

Due to this, the cafe can get quite busy right from its opening hours, so plan accordingly.

3. A Familiar Starbucks Comfort

At Ninenzaka Starbucks, after placing your order, you simply head further into the store to pick up your coffee.

Starbucks coffee maintains a consistent taste worldwide, so my drink tasted just as I expected.

It's often said that traditional Japanese coffee tends to be more darkly roasted, which might not suit everyone's palate. That's why some travelers humorously opt for a 'safe' Starbucks coffee when they're craving a familiar, delicious brew!

I also ordered a banana cake, and it was quite delightful!

It had a subtle banana aroma and just the right amount of sweetness. The bottom layer was studded with nuts, adding a lovely crunchy texture and a nutty flavor that perfectly complemented my coffee.

My companion ordered a blueberry bagel.

While the cream cheese filling wasn't overflowing, it had a smooth texture and was easy to eat. The bagel itself was dotted with blueberries, offering a pleasant mix of sweet and tart flavors.

The Ninenzaka Starbucks is a fantastic spot to pause and refresh while exploring Kyoto.

The familiar menu and coffee taste offer a comforting experience, and browsing the unique merchandise is an added bonus.

I highly recommend stopping by the Ninenzaka Starbucks on your next Kyoto adventure!
