How to Get from Kyoto to Kansai Airport
Haruka Reservation & Timetable: A Complete Guide
Hello, explorers!
If you're planning a trip to Osaka,
you might also be considering a stay in Kyoto!
It's especially popular in spring, when its cherry blossom spots truly shine~
Today, I'll be introducing the Haruka train, one of the best ways to get from Kyoto to Kansai Airport.
(I used it myself last year!!)
What's Inside: 1 ㅣ How to Get from Kyoto to Kansai Airport - Haruka Train vs. Limousine Bus 2 ㅣ Price / Reservations - Why you should book in advance 3 ㅣ Timetable 4 ㅣ How to Exchange Tickets 5 ㅣ Important Notes 📌 My Review from Spring 2024 ⓒ 2025. uow_diary All rights reserved Unauthorized reproduction or modification of content is prohibited. |
What is the Haruka Express? (feat. Limousine Bus Comparison)
The only direct limited express train between Kyoto and Kansai Airport

The Haruka train is a limited express train operated by JR.
Just so you know, the Rapi:t train, often used for travel within Osaka city,
does not operate to Kyoto, and the Haruka is the only direct train service between Kyoto and Kansai Airport.
🚩 Haruka Train's Main Route
Kyoto ⇔ Shin-Osaka ⇔ Osaka ⇔ Tennoji ⇔ Kansai Airport
By the way, there are two main ways to travel between Kyoto and the airport:
the Limousine Bus and the Haruka train.
Limousine Bus vs. Haruka Train <Comparison>
Type | Travel Time | Price (Reservation) |
Haruka Train | Around 80 min | ~$15+ |
Limousine Bus | Around 90 min | ~$20+ |

👉🏻 Considering both price and travel time,
I chose to travel with the fastest and most comfortable option:
✅ the Haruka train, which I actually used.
I typically prefer trains because they're less prone to traffic jams or delays,
so I assumed they would be more expensive. But the bus is pricier?!

Arriving at the airport in just 1 hour and 20 minutes!
It's fast, and the seats are comfortable,
making for a truly satisfying journey.

Watching the scenery outside the train window is
so incredibly romantic, isn't it?!
That unique train journey vibe... ♥️
Haruka Price (feat. Reservations are a Must!)
Be aware that the walk-up price differs from the reservation price
On-site Purchase | 3,110 JPY (Non-reserved seat) 3,640 JPY (Reserved seat) |
Traveler's Reservation Price | Official Price 2,200 JPY Even cheaper when booked through a reservation platform |
If you buy a Haruka train ticket on-site
without a prior reservation,
the price is calculated as a basic fare + limited express surcharge,
making it significantly more expensive.
When you make a reservation,
you can purchase a reserved seat for about ~$11 less.
By the way, this discount is a special perk just for travelers! Isn't that great?
🚨 Many people think the regular price is 2,200 JPY, but that's actually the *traveler's* reservation price, so it's absolutely crucial to book in advance!
Booking Price | MyRealTrip | Klook | KKDAY |
Standard Ticket from ~$15 | E-ticket from ~$14 | E-ticket from ~$13 | |
*Prices are subject to change based on exchange rates, etc. Checked on 3/19* |

KKDAY currently offers the lowest price!
If you plan to use it by June 30th,
we recommend purchasing a limited-time e-ticket, which is both available and affordable!
For dates after that, Klook is a bit cheaper, so we recommend Klook.

You can also ride the Haruka Express with the Kansai Rail Pass.
Depending on your travel itinerary, it might be beneficial,
so it's worth checking out together.

How to Exchange Tickets
For standard tickets, physical exchange is a must!

Haruka tickets come in two types: e-tickets and standard tickets.
We generally recommend e-tickets as they are cheaper, more convenient, and don't require physical exchange.
(However, since they were introduced in 2025 due to the Expo, it's uncertain if they'll continue to be available.)
Standard tickets require **physical ticket exchange** after booking via a QR code.
(As this is a traveler's discount, there's a passport verification process.)
Only tickets received through physical exchange
can be used to pass through the ticket gates.
📌 What to prepare for exchange
Passport, Mobile voucher (QR)
📌Exchange Location
Green machines on the 1st floor of Kyoto Station
*White machines are only for departures from the airport*
📌 How to exchange tickets
After selecting 'exchange order'
- choose your date, - scan your QR code and passport
📌 How to reserve a seat
Insert your ticket into the vending machine
click 'Reserve a seat using a return ticket' - then select your seat.
Language selection is available, and there are staff members on hand
who will assist you individually, so it's not difficult.
Important Notes

1. Reserving the Haruka train is not an option, but a must!
The Haruka train is an express train,
and discounted prices are available for travelers.
On-site purchases are not eligible for discounts,
and the price will be over 70% more expensive, so be sure to book in advance!
2. If you can exchange your ticket in advance, do so!
Ticket exchange queues can be long depending on the situation,
so if you're stopping by Kyoto Station, exchange it in advance.
(Make sure to have your passport and mobile voucher ready!)
Just in case,
I exchanged mine the day before when I had free time,
and the queue was long. 😭
3. When exchanging your physical ticket, reserve your seat too!
After exchanging for a physical ticket, you can reserve your seat.
Sometimes, people don't realize this and just take their tickets,
so make sure to reserve your seat too!
4. Arrive early and queue up
Kyoto Station has more platforms than you might expect,
so I recommend arriving with plenty of time to spare.
A little anecdote: I was also looking for my platform,
and a store employee gave me wrong directions, so I ended up queuing in the wrong place...
Fortunately, because I arrived early, I still managed to board with only 30 seconds to spare!

Oh, and you know 'Ekiben' (station bento boxes) on trains, right?
On the Haruka, you're allowed to eat.
So, grab a bento box beforehand
and enjoying your Ekiben on the train
could be a wonderful memory too!
So far, we've explored everything about the Haruka Limited Express!
When traveling between Kyoto and Kansai Airport,
I really think the Haruka is the best way to go!
✔️ Be sure to book in advance to ride affordably.
Wishing you a wonderful trip to Kyoto!
